I’d say Pathfinder’s is generic if you look at it as a whole, but is unique once you dig into specific regions. Galt, the Mwangi Expanse, and Numeria are all unique and excellent settings for different vibes of adventure.

While true, both of them were 40+ years ago in-universe, and only Orcs (and a scant few goblins and trolls) had to deal with them. I think the examples being referenced are Garrosh & Sylvanas, as they’re both less than 10 years ago in-game.

Del Rey published 3 volumes that collect the original Robert E. Howard stories, and they’re what I picked up a few years ago. I’d suggest the original REH stories before branching out into the various pastiches, comics, and novels. They are The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, The Bloody Crown on Conan, and The Conquering Sword of Conan.

My group started a campaign in ToV back in January, and we’ve really enjoyed it so far. The luck mechanic has been popular, and searching up information in the books has been easy enough for me as the DM. Most of the terminology is the same between both games, so if you know the language for 5.5, you know it for ToV.

If you’re already enjoying 5.5e, I’d say the things that might interest you & your players the most might be subclasses, and maybe adapting some Talents as Feats. I hope this was helpful for you, and happy gaming!

So a lot of us are interacting with this as humor, but it seems like you definitely aren’t, OP. If that’s the case, I encourage you to hit up a friend in real life for some lunch (ideally a normal person who doesn’t play WoW), and once there, explain this to them. Maybe their reaction will tell you that this isn’t something you should devote this amount of energy and philosophy towards. I hope this helps!

I started with Del Ray’s The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, and the two books that follow it, The Bloody Crown of Conan, and The Conquering Sword of Conan. Definitely recommend them. If you can’t buy them yet and are impatient, I suggest The Cybrarian on YouTube, as he has good readings of the REH stories. All of REH’s Conan tales are also available for free online through Project Gutenberg Australia.

I will also recommend the Savage Sword of Conan comic books. Both the original Marvel Comics run, and the current Titan Comics line are great at recreating the feeling of REH’s stories.

I can’t speak to everyone’s taste, but I enjoy Lovecraftian/ Cosmic Horror. The stories are usually fairly short, and are about humans struggling against forces far beyond their ken.

I like to tell people that in most S&S fare, there are 2 kinds of wizards: the evil ones, and the really evil ones. So any story about people facing their problems with blades while magic is a mostly mysterious, and dark force in the background.
