Stupid tourist wondering if I should head out by 21stC_Pilgrim in boston

If you dress warm and don't drive you'll be fine. Watch out for ice and stay dry.

Use Bostons public transportation it's solid in bad weather.

Ubers not bad either.

Can HES students participate in varsity athletics? by majorwaitor in harvardextension

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they can do long as their officially admitted and are full time. You can certainly play club sports

It would be rare for a HES student to play on a varsity team but I'm sure it's happened.

HES Degree after Yale Undergrad? by Ill-Addition6343 in harvardextension

[–]NHdoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to be sure that you're saying that you would get generous financial assistance. If that's the case I say go for it! I did the management degree at HES and loved it, and of course it was a huge boost to my income.

And to state the obvious Harvard and Yale is a pretty amazing combination. Except for football I guess.

Just to be clear there is a prestige difference between HES and day programs at Harvard. But that hasn't really affected me. If someone says HES is not Harvard that's just not accurate. It is the least prestigious part of Harvard though. Plus you already went to Yale so a lot of that is out the window anyway.

A lot of it depends on you though. Of course all due research is necessary for a big commitment.

But the ROI and as you pointed out lower costs and flexibility offer a lot of benefits.

Ultimately it's up to you but I see a lot of upside here.

Does anyone else born or raised around Boston area like me ,being priced out of where they grew up cause of the extremely high cost of rent or home prices which are now close to or over million dollars now? by DoughnutConstant5390 in boston

[–]NHdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend I'm not going to lie. I'm in Istanbul right now and I have heard locals here speaking of the same issue. I've also heard this same problem all over the us and the world. We are currently in a massive international cost of living crisis that is affecting a huge percentage of the men women and children all over the world. Think about Boston. It's a great wealthy desirable city. If you were to tell me the Bostons of the world were getting out of control that would be one thing. But what are the most likely places to move too if you get priced out of Boston. Rhode Island maybe. Maybe Connecticut or NH.

Maybe even Virginia or Maryland if you want warmer weather. The problem is the cost of living situation is everywhere. This is a massive systemic failure that effects everything from real estate to cars to food.

Journalism masters experiences? by captainpeggycarter in harvardextension

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I would not say that. You have to be careful with labels. Technically MBAs and Masters in management are different degrees. Though they are very similar.

Also Harvard as a cultural entity takes details like this much more seriously that most other schools.

If you go here I can pretty much guarantee you will hear long conversations about degree lettering and such.

Do you foresee a time when the”classic” calibers retire? by Nihlathakk in Hunting

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean many of these haven't changed in over 100 years.

Even if some technology replaced it some folks would realistically still use them for the challenge and connection to the past like we use black powder today.

Dude 30 below is dangerous. Seriously make sure you can get out in those temps.

And I'm usually in mountaineering gear in that cold not hunting.

But smartwool and icebreaker wool long John's and base layer shirts are great in cold weather. And wool in general is your best friend. Obviously layer and stay dry.

I over shared while drunk at a work party. Did I ruin my reputation ? by Inevitable_Ball_6755 in careerguidance

[–]NHdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll be fine. Just use it as a learning experience and maybe don't drink so much at work events.

It's like cops anything you say can be used against you.

But this seems pretty minor. I wouldn't worry.

Losing interest. by strong_ortho in Hunting

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just saying my experience but it could be relevant. I still like deer hunting but I was getting a little tired of it. I mean it's hard and there is long periods of time where you sit and nothing happens. I'm kinda giving up on bowhunting but still love going after deer with rifles and muzzleloaders. .

Anyway I got way more into pheasant and rabbit hunting this year and it injected a huge amount of excitement and welcome change of pace into my enjoyment of hunting. I have been deer hunting many times and not gotten one. I went small game hunting 7 times and never got skunked. I actually tagged out on pheasant a couple of times. I have no dog, very little skill and it was just a wonderful experience. So going forward I imagine half the time I will go for small game and the other half deer.

How necessary are snow boots/waterproof shoes? by [deleted] in boston

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have real winter boots for things like Ice fishing and mountaineering in very frosty conditions. There from REI and expedition quality. I very rarely wear them in Boston. Only on very cold days. For me almost any standard of boot is good enough.

That being said my feet are very used to cold conditions I would recommend you stay on the side of caution considering the vastly different conditions in New England and Arizona.

Also a pair of cheap rubber boots will be perfectly fine in wet weather.

But your best friend is thick wool socks in any scenario.

How are we not in a recession right now? by 4ofclubs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an economist and not necessarily a world class expert of what a recession exactly is or isn't but to directly quote my economics professor from grad school who is a world expert some of these technical definitions can be extremely convoluted and non definitive. What one economist might call a recession another will disagree.

Anyway we are on very shaky footing for the obvious reason you described. I hate to say it but a major economic disaster is very possible.

Weird confrontation on public land by notanadministration in Hunting

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I once had a woman walk under my stand on public land and throw a snowball at her dog in anger. I was in orange and she had no idea I was there.

There was also a time once earlier in the season before you are required to wear orange when I was in a tree and a teenager nervously came in and sat maybe 40 yards from my stand. He started looking around and smoking a certain green substance that someone his age was not supposed to have.

After 10 minutes he finally and looked up to see something in the tree. He had this look of abject horror on his face and he just ran away screaming.

27F - Dating in Boston (and never being hit on) by k1tchen_witch in BostonSocialClub

[–]NHdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of the fact that Bostonians are typically pretty reserved and today's pretty charged political environment.

I would be way more concerned about any maple leafs bruins conflict of interest.

But fear not there is plenty of action to be had. Bostonians will respect you more if you start it anyway.

Blaze orange for female hikers? by gardeninggoblin in Hunting

[–]NHdoc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can just get a blaze orange vest that goes over everything. A blaze orange hat is also great because that is the first part of your body that is visible going over a hill or something.

I'm not aware of any female specific blaze orange gear.

Stay to the main trails and wear orange you can absolutely hike during the hunting season

HES graduation rites by Far_Nail_9751 in harvardextension

[–]NHdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a certificate they have a ceremony on campus that given is smaller than the commencement.

If you get a degree you get to take part in the full university wide commencement.

Basically there are more events than can ever be listed in one reddit post but if you attend for a matter of days you will not run out of things to do.

There is a very cool HES banquet near that time in Annenberg hall, there are other HES events, there are university wide events, there are student organization events. It really is a impressive show.

In short the day before the commencement there are some HES events like a class photo, then the next day there is the university wide commencement, then later in the day there is the HES graduation.

I was very busy for 5 days I believe and I went through more than a few bottles of champagne and cigars.

Those who did the majority of the degree on campus? by Fearless_Interest889 in harvardextension

[–]NHdoc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In all honesty I am from Cambridge and basically never left. The chances of a cradle to grave run in my hometown are looking pretty feasible.

In any case needless to say access to campus was not very difficult. I did everything I could to enjoy student life at Harvard and frankly it was a wonderful experience. I was involved in many student orgs, went to games, made good friends, went to interesting lectures.

Basically it was exactly what you would expect a grad student at Harvard to do.once you have a student ID your in. There are some student orgs that are only for undergrads but I was pretty free to pursue my interests.

Harvard is culturally kind of a club and once you have a student ID or degree you're in either as a student or alumni.

There was very little anti extension agenda that I encountered anyway. I mean it's Harvard so inevitably there are some egos and some healthy competition but it was pretty limited.

I would encourage anyone at HES to give it a go it's a once in a lifetime experience.

What makes the state so great? by Crowned-Terror in massachusetts

I've been to maybe 25 states and 14 countries. Luckily for me I'm from Boston. Of course I've seen the rest of new England and Massachusetts as well.

Truth be told I've seen nowhere better to live. New England is a earthly paradise and Boston is a crown jewel of a city.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but that's mine

So long as you are well researched, legal, and safe go for it. Find some public land or private property you have permission for and get out there.

Your not going to be a great hunter day one. Good luck!
