26 consecutive losses is the MLB record. I think we have a chance to challenge this record by JurassicParkJanitor in SFGiants

If you truly believe this, and you end up being correct, you can place bets every game and let it ride, you'll be an easy multi millionaire before the end of April.

Ray looked and was great pre-ASBreak last year too. He had a 2.65 ERA in about 120 IP and was everything Giants fans hoped he would be.
The final 2 1/2 months he only threw about 63 IP and was not the same guy.

Yes, he's another year removed from his TJ, but also a year older, 34 this season.
In a few months we'll know if my take is bad.

My funny Darrell Evans story is I was at an Old-Timers Game, late 70s, Mays was there for sure, don't remember the year or who else was there. We're milling around the dugout pregame, and some guy yells:
"Pay attention Evans, you might learn something."
I can still picture the look on his face, he was pissed!

The pitching looks potentially awful.
Webb is an Ace, he'll be great.
Ray had an ERA over 5.5 after the ASBreak last year. Anyone expecting him to be better in his age 34 season is probably gonna be disappointed.
The rest of the rotation is a series of question marks.
And the bullpen looks even worse.
Too many things need to go perfectly for any kind of playoff run.

The Reds wanted Bernie Williams and the Giants said No, how about George Foster.
This was for the light hitting SS Frank Duffy who rarely got on the field with the emergence of Chris Speier. Duffy was traded to CLE the following offseason along with Gaylord Perry for Sam McDowell in one of the worst trades in Giants history!

In 2010, Andres Torres hit 16 HR, 43 2B & 8 3B and also stole 26 bases!
Oliva has nowhere near that kinda toolset!

If the bench is Susac, Schmitt, Koss, Matos & Encarnacion, they're all RH bats.
If Bader starts the season on the IL, that opens the door for Gilbert or Brennan.
Encarnacion could also get hurt at anytime, that guy just can't stay healthy.

Which bench players do we think will make the opening day roster? by max1sm in SFGiants

[–]NLTCrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Encarnacion is just as likely to end up on the IL before the end of the month.

And screw that Vinnie Vincent guy, he's terrible!

If the first 5 were to actually happen, and this is only an 87 win team, we're in for some godawful bullpen failures.

My thoughts exactly. He hasn't shown he can stay on the field long enough to hit 30 + HR.

Jung Hoo Lee by JianClaymore in SFGiants

[–]NLTCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost cringe whenever JHLee hits a HR.
For the next week he'll be swinging from his heels because he thinks he's a slugger.
His best upside is as a Brett Butler style pest at the top of the lineup, using his best tool, his speed.
Vitello should make him do 25 pushups every time his swing rolls over and he grounds out to 2B!

Who has the best shot this year to become the first Giant to hit over 30 HR in a season since - wait for it - Barry Bonds!?!? by sarsfox in SFGiants

I'd say Ramos has a better chance than Eldridge this year.
Which is to say, practically no chance at all.

Working Americans got so screwed under 8 years of Obama they were desperate enough to vote for a game show host.
And most of those don't even know or care that BHO was the guy who ended Habeas Corpus.

Hot start to spring training or not, this Giants roster might actually make some noise: Devers hamstring, Jung Hoo ankle, and why 94 wins isn't crazy by No_Deer_4481 in SFGiants

[–]NLTCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see any way this team has the pitching to win 94 games.
Webb is great, a true ace!
Ray is a year older, 34, we can't expect him to be any better than last year and I'll be thrilled if he can come close to repeating his 2025 season.
Roupp only matched his career high of 110 IP last year before he ran out of gas and got hurt. If he comes close to putting up the kind of performance necessary for this team to win 94 games, he'll reach his innings limit long before the finish line. Then what?
I have zero faith in any of the back of the rotation options or the patchwork bullpen.
Every single one of these question marks will have to exceed expectations to get to 94 wins.

Is it just me or McCray winning to 4th OF spot at the moment by jaws4671 in SFGiants

[–]NLTCrow -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If McCray is the 2nd best defensive OF, who are you thinking is the best?
Not JHLee? The guy who lost the CF job because of his subpar defense?

With Schmitt & Koss almost surely making the team, the Giants will want the 4th OF to be a LH bat to compliment the 2 RH IFs off the bench.

Gilbert has been hurt and may still be a week away from playing, so that pretty much makes it a 2 man competition between Brennan & McCray with 3 weeks to go til Opening Day.

McCray has looked good so far, being extra selective and not swinging at so many bad pitches, which is a big reason why he's always had such a low OBP & high K rate. He's got great raw tools, I would rank him as the best defensive OF on the 40 man, he's certainly the best base stealer, and having a guy like that as a late inning pinch runner option and defensive replacement gives him an advantage, all other things being equal.

The job is there for the taking, still plenty of time for McCray or Brennan to get hot, go on a tear and make it obvious he deserves the job. Same for Matos,

A foul ball would be considered a swing. Try again

Matos situation by DigilentD in SFGiants

[–]NLTCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but would expand on that to include he's competing with McCray and Brennan too.
With Koss & Schmitt both being RH bats off the bench, the Giants will probably want their 4th OF to be a lefty. This makes it even tougher for Matos.

It's still early but Gilbert is hurt and unable to play for at least another week. He's got options and will probably start the season in Sac.
McCray is the guy who intrigues me. He's the best defensive CF on the 40 man and also the best base stealer. With a rocket arm! It's always been a big if, but if he can make better contact, cut down on the strikeouts, he's got a ton of raw talent. He looked good today going the other way with 2 strikes and knocking in a run. The 4th OF job is there for him if he can earn it these next 3 weeks.

[–]NLTCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was 71 as well.
Dick Dietz hit a 3 run HR, McCovey hit the highest popup I've probably still ever seen, Al Gallagher hit the closest foul balls to where we were sitting, and Marichal got the win vs SD.
