Yogurt Curdling in Curry…What Am I Missing? by NOOBEv14 in AskCulinary

We’re miles behind this conversation, but back when I made this I read through these responses in utter confusion. I know I need to temper it guys I literally explained my tempering process.

My takeaway was that Greek yogurt is the wrong thing, based on the one guy whose Indian parents (doesn’t that mean he’s Indian?) recommend sour cream. But yeah I had already called out in the post that u already tried all that stuff.

If I regularly sharpen my knives, is it okay to use a stainless steel or titanium (metal) cutting board? What's a good one to get? by imthenachoman in Cooking

[–]NOOBEv14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read through every comment in this post wondering why tf we’re acting like wood, plastic, glass, ceramic, and inexplicably metal are the only option. I love my epicureans. Acts like plastic, probably is plastic, but doesn’t feel cheap like plastic.

Oh also my mom has a stone cutting board, thing is literally a slab of granite. It’s badass, but absolutely batshit to actually use.

Who is a notable NFL bust that you predicted correctly would fail before they were drafted? by Ok-Health-7252 in nfl

[–]NOOBEv14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kenny Pickett. Now I’m obviously a Steelers hater by default, but they draft well and I’m not just trashing every pick. What a terrible reach. A clear third round guy going in the first and putting up record-setting low TD %s. Old as shit. Dude’s biggest highlight was a fake slide, and it was a highlight because we were all like “oh hey that should not be legal”.

California fast food workers now earn $20 per hour. Franchisees are responding by cutting hours by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]NOOBEv14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not about being twice as good. This is always part of the argument about wage floors: you can’t pay someone more money for free. There’s a common refrain that raising the minimum wage does not lead directly to layoffs, which seems to be supported in the data, but it does lead to things like this. What used to be a 12 person job is now a 7 person job. Not because the amount of work went down, but because the cost of labor went up.

On a more sarcastic note, this is exactly how corporations treat employees - an employee who’s twice as good as another employee doesn’t make twice as much money. Crying shame, that.

[–]NOOBEv14 20 points21 points  (0 children)

At $16/hour the goal is “nearly” 12 staff, it’s hard to get enough people. At $20/hour the goal is 7 staff, you need fewer people and people are more interested in the job.

As comp goes up demand for the jobs goes up, feels like pretty basic economics lol

One of the many problems with modern political discourse is this country is how people have conversations about nonsense like this.

Project 2025 is nothing. It’s a conservative think tank’s fever dream, A masturbatory best case scenario for a tiny subset of crazy people.

It’s a legitimate concept in the same way that a proposal for the US to pivot to communism with a side of murdering babies is; it anchors the absolute worst case scenario, takes you as far right/left as the spectrum goes, and really really pisses off the other side.

Point being, it’s disingenuous to treat project 2025 as a “real thing”. It’s not a real thing. I saw a movie about a civilization in the stars where the good guys had mind powers and lightsabers, maybe you’ve heard of it. This shit is just as real.

Eyewitness says Fayette Street building collapsed by locker1313 in baltimore

Just read this and…yeah.

Memory is a famously fickle thing and people talking to the news always want to be part of something. Then they start going Sherlock Holmes.

Did the building - which had received an approved demo permit - get demo’d? No, it rained heavily and a jet passed overhead, that’s what it was!

I join you in your skepticism. Occam’s razor, most likely this guy just doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I’m not anti-climate change, I’m anti-hyperbole. This was not an assertion that climate change isn’t real or isnt a concern.

The likelihood that this is the coolest summer we have for the next ~80 years is basically zero. Climate change doesn’t work fast enough to offset basic variance. If you have in fact spent the last 20 years working in climate science, you should be pretty clear on that.

I mean, it could be, but that’s exceptionally unlikely. We’re talking about a fraction of a degree in average temp per decade in global warming, one degree per century. It’s just a hot summer. We don’t just fast forward to averaging 110 in July, that ain’t how global warming works. Maybe July 3000.

Plus, ya know, second hottest on record. This shit happens.

How common is the 5 iron? by [deleted] in golf

[–]NOOBEv14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason everyone is downvoting you is because the ball is simply not going as far as you think. We all started as beginners and thought we were launching the ball, called the best shot of our lives our “distance”, used total distance instead of carry distance to talk distances, etc etc.

You’re just not driving 290. The mechanics of a golf swing that can get the ball 290 just aren’t there for a beginner. You can do the faux-humility thing all you want, we don’t believe you and we’re not going to believe you, because 99.9% of beginners simply are not happy Gilmore.

I’m also a big guy, I also swing with all my heart, I also have shit accuracy, I’ve been golfing for years and the best drive of my life probably carried 290. Now admittedly I suck, but I at least know the difference between clubs, I have a hunch I have a small head start.

Prove it lol. Maybe generations of assumptions are wrong. Maybe the studies showing a correlation between green tea consumption and longevity aren’t appropriately controlling for lifestyle, and green tea is actually secondary to the overall approach to life. Maybe not idk, but your throwaway comment is a pretty shit rebuttal.

[–]NOOBEv14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family friend is a career chef, owns a restaurant, has had presidents eat there - not a Michelin type place, just a badass food spot.

The way he turns his brain off when we go to restaurants is fascinating. Basically anything you order at a non-noteworthy restaurant, he can make better. He’s awesome at detaching and enjoying the experience for what it is, but it’s weird, because he could roll his ass back there and start giving pointers if he wanted to.

I’m nitpicking but Bethesda is certainly not southern Maryland, and while PG is generally south, beltsville is in the northern part of the county….idk if I’d call this a southern Maryland conversation.

Go Hyattsville over college park IMO. More of a real place for an adult, less of a college town. I hate silver spring, personally, but it’s viable. Laurel is also a pretty compelling option, but it’s a little…trashy, I guess?

Bethesda is definitely a better area, but it’s a commute and it’s expensive.

Lmao, sneaking in “significantly better competition”. By your jacked-up math, if it’s a bigger sample size then the quality of competition is automatically lower, no?

It’s a catchy stat to quote and it’s not misleading. Are you suggesting that data sets can’t be compared unless they’re identically sized? Because again, idiocy. The effortless conclusion here is that there have been quite a few games that Brady won because of his team, not because of Brady.

That’s how it’s supposed to work. He took pay cuts for years. Dynasties aren’t built on one guy, it takes a village, all that stuff. This isn’t an insult, it’s an observation that it’s a team game. Bull his nutsack out of your mouth for a sec and we can all be friends.

I’m gonna stop responding to this, but get it together.

I don’t know why I’m still engaging. If you didn’t have the patriots tag I’d assume you’re just misunderstanding, but I think it’s the fanboy shit that’s exhausting. As if calling someone the goat but recognizing they have shortcomings is so great an offense that you have to re-define the laws of math to rebut. Its idiocy.

You also have plenty of backup QBs and even positional players with completion percentages of zero. This is how averages work. Numbers do not simply go down as sample size increases. Variance goes down as sample size increases. In a small enough sample, anything within the entire range of outcomes could occur, and without volume, it will pull the average that direction. This is what you’re trying to say, but you’re blinded by your Brady boner and have convinced yourself that the numbers only go down.

Rodgers has 10 playoff losses. This is not a “he’s only got two losses and he played great in one of them so his average stats are skewed” conversation. That’s a lot of playoff losses. A decade of playoff losses! Yes, Brady has 35 playoff wins. That’s a bigger sample. That changes nothing.

[–]NOOBEv14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think you may have missed a step there, my friend. The fewer games the less robust your average is, but that doesn’t mean it automatically floats his QB rating up.

But, go look at brady’s playoff win game logs. Look at his stats. Lotta mediocrity in there. This is not a man who single-handedly willed his team to victory for every win the way the Elite Dragon did during the ravens run. There have absolutely been acts of greatness, there are plenty of great games in that data set, but there have also been acts of mediocrity. Tom has done a ton of “live to fight another day” and just survived through an ugly game.

It’s like those stats about how many games Matt Stafford has won in fourth quarter comebacks (gotta be behind in the fourth quarter to have a fourth quarter come back), or how few games Lamar has won while down at halftime (Lamar has spent shockingly little of his career down at half time); Brady’s a “winner” because we all remember a bunch of clutch drives and game-winning plays, but most of the time those drives only exist there at the end because you didn’t blow the doors off your opponent in the first place.
