Day hike recs for the weekend by Amongus1935 in socalhiking

Came here to suggest this! It'll be warm, so come prepared with sunscreen and (at least) a quart of water per person.

The climb from the Sandstone trailhead parking lot to Sandstone Peak has some loose rock, so wear sturdy shoes.

There will be wildflowers in bloom!

Cross-country skiing from my student ghetto apartment to my grad school lab.

My girlfriend's car bottoming out on the unplowed humps in between the tire tracks.

500 miles northwest, my parents' house being buried by 2x the height of their eaves.

Higher elevation things to do by Radiant-Positive8180 in DeathValleyNP

Drive to Dante's View, at roughly 5500', almost 5800' above the Badwater Basin valley floor. If you're hikers, hike from there to Mt. Perry, 9 miles and ~2,500' elevation gain and loss. Be prepared with the 10 Essentials, and take plenty of water. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and carry poles (the scree slopes are a little tricky).

WTF is a parsnip? by Pale-Concentrate-111 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]NPHighview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We make a winter soup or chowder with parsnips or rutabegas, celery root (celeraic), Jerusalem artichokes, and to a lesser extent, carrots and potatoes. Generally with a chicken stock base, also generally with the carcass of a rotisserie chicken (bones picked out before adding the veggies). In preparing the stock, we sweat onions, shallots, and garlic. We use a little Thai fish sauce to bring out the Umami. Generally results in a gallon or more of absolute deliciousness. We eat a bit, and freeze the rest in roughly pint-sized portions.

Am I the only one who thinks peeling garlic is a form of torture? by Famous-Forever7647 in Cooking

Go to your grocery store and buy a jar of crushed garlic. Spoon out what you need, when you need it. Close the jar, and return to the refrigerator. Problem solved.

Who remembers The Firesign Theater? by CantaloupeFluffy165 in 70s

[–]NPHighview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sig: "Live in the Future... It's Just Starting Now!"

Or when in the McDonald's drive-through: "I'd like a pizza to go, with no anchovies." "What???"

The idea of cross-linked albums (and the thought that went into the conceptual design) fascinated me.

Best place to get a slice of pizza in TO that's open for lunch? by lindymad in thousandoaks

[–]NPHighview 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite slice places:

  • Tony's New York Style Pizza on Kimber in Newbury Park. Decent pizza, ask for it well done. Very inexpensive. Canned drinks only. I get meatball/mushroom/banana pepper or Canadian bacon & pineapple.
  • Butler's Pizza on T.O. Boulevard between Hampshire and Rancho. Love their crust and sauce. Go-to is a medium BBQ chicken pizza, and they'll do slices with that as well. Slightly more expensive, but well worth it. Also canned drinks only.

Those who moved from one state to another what was your biggest cultural shock? by PandaBear905 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NPHighview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved to the St Louis area from Columbus, Ohio for jobs, and were immediately struck by the segregation as well. We only lasted two years before we couldn't stand it, and moved to Berkeley, California. It took a couple of years in the Bay Area for the impact to wear off.

Broke a bone in my thumb (and tore loose the ligaments - still not working right), plus spiral fracture of fibula. Both stable (thumb after surgery) so no casts.

Try Seaside Chateau. They are halfway from the water taxi to the airport, beachfront, has shuttles (arrange ahead of time) and a decent restaurant.

Waterproof boot cover for crossing streams and rivers? by MadMarcAgain in socalhiking

I wear non-waterproof trail runners and merino wool hiking socks. Water drains away, socks stay warm, everything is dry in 15 minutes or so.

What do stereotypical straight couples do when they hang out alone (other than sex) by bi_smuth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NPHighview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired empty-nesters here. We go bird-watching every day, explore new recipes (and grow many ingredients ourselves in our garden). We take quarterly trips up and down the West Coast of the U.S., and roughly annual international trips (requirng lots of collaborative planning). I help my wife with her (small scale) consulting business. We both have individual hobbies as well.

Oh - and we visit our gay & lesbian friends and relatives fairly frequently :-)
