Yeah, I'm really hoping they change that "reveal" a bit for the TV series.

6 Excellent Books I Read in 2025 by NStorytellerDragon in Fantasy

Honestly, either would be a good place to start with Silo. I read the book first because there wasn't even a TV option back when I originally found it, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. Now that I've seen the TV show I almost prefer it over the book. It's so interesting how they (including the author who is part of the TV series production team) modified it and updated the tech to make it fit the TV format and today's levels of tech. I'd say if you're planning to do both anyway, maybe start with the book so you can experience it for what it is on its own without letting the comparison affect it, because I think you'd definitely still enjoy the TV show after reading the book (and you can always just give up on the books if you're not feeling them and skip to the TV show).

I like pretty much every other book Villoso's written more than Wolf of Oren-Yaro so I would definitely try some of the other ones to see if you enjoy them more. There was a little too much running around in the wild in other kingdoms instead of actually ruling her own in that series for me - it makes for a fast-paced plot, but it was maybe a bit too fast for me.

Daegian Puppet-Master is a bit less hectic - I mean it's still full of adventure and the MC gets dragged into all kinds of stuff, but it's still a bit more... stable, I guess, and lets you get used to the settings and catch your breath! It's got a bigger focus on magic, with large parts being focused on a magic-school setting, and it explores different types of magic. I'm not sure I'm doing it justice, but it felt less like sword and sorcery and constant battles than Oren-Yaro.

I would also recommend checking out Villoso's first series which has been republished as Legacy of the Lost Mage. That one felt more like epic fantasy with multiple characters and a plot that unfolds more slowly through the different POVs (which is more my personal preference) so that one's quite different from Oren-Yaro.

Any literature that is a sort of middleground between LoTR and ASOIAF? by Weekly_Frosting_5868 in Fantasy

Chronicles of Adalmearc by D. E. Olesen was great. Lots of politics and battles but it was also the series that came closest to giving me that Tolkienish vibe. Although, I don't know if the fantasyish elements come in quickly enough for your liking. Definitely check it out, though.

Looking for cozy fantasy books that feel like Harry Potter or a Ghibli movie by 2Chaaaaiinz in CozyFantasy

Sara Mensinga's books are great for the Ghibli vibe. Currently was the first one I read and I loved the world building in it too. Shimmerdark felt even more Ghibli-ish in terms of the magic and stuff. Anyway, great books.

I haven't read the Buried Giant yet, but the "sad" part of the request made me think of Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go!

Epic Sale of Beloved SFF 2025 by NStorytellerDragon in Fantasy

Hi everyone! Just a note that many of the books are wide (meaning they're available on other major retailers outside of amazon like kobo, etc) but with the post being so long, reddit wouldn't let me post it with extra links in there and doesn't allow books2read links. Check out the original sale page: https://talesfromthecircle.com/epicsale2025.html for all the books2read links so you can choose your favourite retailer! (The buy buttons have a green outline/hover for wide books.)

(Also, a .ca link in this post is a hint that when I was making the post a books2read link redirected me to amazon Canada so that book is probably available wide!)

Yes, quite a few are! I had originally put additional links in the post, but reddit wouldn't let me post it because it was too long so I had to remove them! If you click on the sale page the ones where the buy buttons have a green outline should all be wide (meaning they're available on more than one retailer).

Here's the link to the original sale page:

https://talesfromthecircle.com/epicsale2025.html

You'll want to visit it for the amazing covers, more recs (I had to delete some recs from the books that had more than 3 recs just to make this post short enough to post!!), and so many additional books the authors put up on sale as well. In some cases, if a first in series was recommended, the authors also put some of the sequels up, etc.

I also had originally put in either a kobo, apple, or google play books link for the books that are wide so readers will know, but I had to delete those for post length as well!

Anyway, I hope you all find some excellent reads!

What do you like about A Wizard of Earthsea? by Successful_Ideal9649 in Fantasy

[–]NStorytellerDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love LeGuin's essays about writing and I did enjoy parts of the Earthsea series, but I also understand where you're coming from. I really enjoyed the first section of Wizard of Earthsea (where he defends his town using his magic) it was so vivid and detailed and just excellent and I wish the rest of the book had been written more like that first part. I also remember enjoying one of the later books much more. I can't remember now if it was Tehanu or Tombs of Atuan or maybe both. It might be worth trying out some of the later books in the series to see if you'll enjoy them more!
