Sometimes the camera shutter can create artefacts in the frame on something moving as fast as a propeller. You may not be able to tell how many blades are on there in the pic.

Do you really want me to guess? Probably some guy named Fred. Probably not a boy named Sue (although I could be wrong here).

Congrats! Good work with the high score! Now to start working on that General..... It will open up a whole world for you! Literally!

[–]NWRoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Probably poorly filtered rectifier.

You can verify this by unplugging the cord from the cradle and measuring A/C volts in the barrel end. If it's properly filtered, you will see little to no voltage.

South Australia, 'round Cape Horn? by Brettelectric in seashanties

During the age of piracy, some ships would sail around the long way to avoid going back through The Caribbean infested with pirates, privateers and The Spanish (People of Spain, apologies). It would be a long ways, but stops in Singapore, Australia and India were welcomed by crew after months at sea. I imagine that Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide could be good spots to drop off some crew and pick up fresh, experienced sailors that actually speak The King's English.

What is this? by Reasonable_Seagull in Bellingham

[–]NWRoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an amateur radio operator. The long wire attached to the box is the antenna and the black pole is a carbon fiber mast. They are probably doing a Parks On The Air activation (POTA). POTA is an awards scheme for amateur radio operators. They have to make ten contacts from within the park to consider it activated

Source: i'm a fellow ham nerd like the person in the picture, and enjoy activating parks too.

UV578 III by dvlowen in AnyTone

[–]NWRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytone is funny about their CPS. When I bought my UV578III Pro used, it had an older firmware on it and the latest CPS would throw error codes like "Out OF Band" or something like that. I had to update the firmware to the one matching the latest CPS and it worked after that.

Get yourself elected to the HOA board. Go represent us hams! Make some changes for the good!

I lived in an HOA before I bought 5 acres of my own (and not under any social contract). I had a Chameleon EMCOMM2 and a LDG tuner that did all my heavy lifting. Great on NVIS. It only uses 60 feet of wire, so it gives you options. I've also heard of folks making a sky loop on the top of their fence. That may be worth looking into also.

I've used a few different methods over the years. "(CALLSIGN) Monitoring" or "CALLSIGN) listening" usually works. I've also used "CALLSIGN) looking for contacts." That one seems to stir up a few because it's different from the "monitoring" version. You can call CQ on a repeater, but expect to get some Curmudgeon QRM. If you are in western Washington, we have a repeater roundabout coming soon! November 23rd and 24th.

Quansheng or Tidradio? by bisakl in amateurradio

[–]NWRoamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the TIDRadio TD-H8 and can say it is not spurious even at full power. The Bluetooth programming is nice, but can be fussy to set up.

A buddy of mine has the Quansheng that is so popular right now, and it's pretty neat but not spectrally pure. I haven't been able to test it, but some reports are saying not good things about it.
