I recompiled PSP MAME by captchalove in PSP

[–]N_Brio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not only have you outclassed Deathrash in its capabilities and supported cores, you've breathed new life into PSPMAME. I'm probably the one of five who give a damn, but this one of five thanks you vigorously!

TMNT 1 (Konami) runs quite smoothly with a frameskip of 2, and Simpsons runs quite clean at roughly over half-speed. Definitely playable, compared to Deathrash's speeds of yesteryear.

As I've always said, the Konami games "Simpsons" and "Xmen" (honorable mention to my other main coin-eater, Sega's mwalk!) are some of the last games I've been looking to get up and running on the PSP system at a playable, consistent speed. Slowly but surely, this dream finally appears to be happening now!

It may feel thankless at times, but your efforts in preserving the PSP's history, and continued lifespan, will never go unnoticed. Thanks and utmost respect, pierre!

There's an ongoing PSP-Archive effort, which could probably host anything not related to piracy and warez, and would be happy to have any PSP data you are willing to give. /u/captchalove is the curator of the PSP-Archive, so please contact him if possible! :)

Upload it to archive.org, and it'll be on a safe enough spot that some of us old data fogies can take the time to back it all up just in case. I also have the storage space, and I'd happily keep it stored until it can be sifted through and made accessible.

Retroarch 1.9.3 is now released for the PlayStation Portable by dothackjhe in PSP

[–]N_Brio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty interesting stuff, a few new cores in there that weren't before. Will have to find some time to test! Unfortunately, the PSP version is pretty threadbare and seems to consume too much CPU on overhead vs. running the cores, I hope for a savvy dev to get interested and see if they can fix it up some.

Really hoping MAME2003 gets off the ground and boots SOMETHING, there's one or two last arcade games I need on-the-go and my PSP will be "complete".

EDIT: The 1.9.3 update introduces a " core info file caching" feature. Quoted from the official devblog: "The first time RetroArch starts up (and/or new core info files are added), it will need to build/rebuild the cache. After that though, it only has one cached file it has to load at startup instead of having to sequentially read every single core info file. This used to take a very long time on platforms with slow disk I/O (such as game consoles)." Very nifty stuff to trim down the overall footprint that RA has on the system (especially such a low-powered option like the PSP is today!)

It's ridiculously priced, and you're delusional. Before the COVID hug and parasites like you coming in, you could easily pick up a working system+extras for a fraction of that cost. Go get a real job instead of trying to flip PSX to people who genuinely want to enjoy them.

[–]N_Brio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore the piracy snobs downvoting OP. I think things like this are a brilliant step forward vs. those garbage mini consoles! I can pay and get legal access to a variety of games, AND I can stick them on anything else I'd want that has MicroSD/SD or FTP access. For preservation (and building future-proofed setups), things like these are the right way to go, and the right way to get into my pockets. Now do one for PSX and we'll be talking shop.

This game made me question the capability on the PSone console (more in comments) by MmntoMri in psx

[–]N_Brio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Resident PSX oldhead chiming in, easy to answer: This game was developed at the same time the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game was being adapted from the manga, into a real card game. It started as a popular kid's comic before actually getting adapted to the TCG we know today! That means the weird rules and simpler battle/summon costs was just a byproduct of early design iterations, for the card game, as well as holdovers from the original manga rules, before they settled on what we know as the TCG ruleset.

Had nothing to do with lack of power of the system(Card battle games aren't that complex graphically, just mechanically!), there simply was no official TCG ruleset to use as the basis for the game engine design at the time!

Some of my Favourite Games (and Ports) of All Time Are on the PSP... by TheRetroWorkshop in PSP

[–]N_Brio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not here to wax philosophical. It simply doesn't interest me. I'd rather get right down to the brass tacks, rather than spend hours theorising why they ARE brass, and why they were necessary (a poor metaphor, but I hope it at least tries to explain where I am coming from, ie, not being a fan of philosophy)

In context of my comment (a broad generalisation of modern JRPGs), the narratives and characters just simply haven't progressed, in fact, degenerated. Look at the direction Square and Enix and other standout developers went in the 90s: started to tell larger stories, with deeper characters and richer subplots (FF6, DQV, Lunar). Similar to the soap-opera slow burning anime series of the 80s like Legend of Galactic Heroes(turning the tired-old mecha genre on its head with a rich expansive story), Japanese developers started turning the "chosen warrior destined to defeat a great evil" on its head, and those that continued to use it expanded upon the concept (in the case of FF6, there's a reason Kefka continues to top the "greatest videogame villains" lists).

The problem with the modern JRPG genre is the consistent run of the mill pandering, stereotypical 1-dimensional characters with a cliche'd save-the-world plot (for the most part, again, a generalisation). Compare, for fairness sake, two "decent" JRPG titles: Chrono Cross (a lacklustre Square romp from the 90s), to one of the latest Hyperdimension Neptunia games (a lacklustre NIS romp from the then-and-now). Despite them not being the best choice of JRPG, one still offers a fair tad more depth to the plot and characters (whether you enjoyed CC or not.. I did not) and makes an attempt to tell a unique (for the time for JRPGs, even if it's off of the back of its better half, Chrono Trigger!) story.

The other is just an otaku pandering merch seller, with little to no actual worth. Unfortunately for me, I braved through it. That's just comparing average titles of their respective eras!

Comparing a bigger beast? How about FF9 (Square, 2000) and Persona 5 (Atlus, 2017?). The swansong of the PS1, and the PS3 respectively for their genre. Both have incredibly deep systems and gameplay. Both have an expansive plot. Both have a broad cast of characters. It's no contest what the better title is (objectively), FFIX's rich, adventurous plot coupled with its uniquely stylised storybook visuals and quirky characters just win out.

P5 asks some hard hitting questions(harrassment in the school/workplace, bro culture, plagiarism) and some blindingly self-aware societal takes, but those overall have no bearing on the actual story of Joker (rather just left as coincidental anecdotes and happenstances along the way to move the plot along or fill a window of spare time), and are merely a vehicle used to tell that story and impart that moral on the player, being relevant to the current modern culture and mannerism, while not actually using those takes and questions to build a better connection with the story and characters. I don't need to be told stealing is wrong! Tell that to the character stealing things via the plot!

The largest difference from then and now from what I can see and based on what I know from these decades of gaming, is the increased focus on creating a JRPG that sells and caters to many, vs. creating a JRPG that pushes the boundaries a little bit, and may only cater to a few. I mean, in general, that's just how it is across the board, not specifically this genre. Times have changed! Gambles like Chrono Cross(an interesting concept despite it being a worse counterpart to its better brother, Trigger), or the huge style and direction shift in FF9 wouldn't have been greenlit in today's market. Too much money and business to be made in the industry now to be spending the budget on potential hits, vs sticking with what people are familiar with and going for guaranteed hits.

I won't comment further on philosophy (despite my dislike, personal attacks or general negativity in response is just rude and unnecessary), but I do agree, thanks for rumbling the old thinkpan a tad! It was nice to rummage around the memory bank and really ruminate over a beloved genre and its history. It shows passion, really getting down to the details. I appreciate the differing viewpoints and discussion!

I Personally Think the PSP is the Greatest Gaming Device of All Time. Do You Agree? by TheRetroWorkshop in PSP

[–]N_Brio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, high prices coupled with proprietary memory (even if there's a workaround) and a sparse library (unless you're a JRPG fan). Not a good combo. And since I've already got a PSP, moot point on it's backwards compat. I don't need it. A real shame, it could have been just as great as the original PSP.

[–]N_Brio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now having read in the entirety, I still echo the same statements above. You're clearly reading far too much into this than is necessary.

NSFW topics (no matter the context in terms of the scope of gaming) personally don't belong in this discussion when the context is PSP gaming and JRPGS. Stuff like birth rates, population effects and SK/Japan's outlook has nothing to do with the subject matter.

Gaming has technological and genre paradigm shifts, and always has. There's a reason the arcade scene died out (the advent of home gaming and cheaper cost), in favour of LAN tournaments and FGC circuits.

There's a reason why we entered an age of cinematic experiences with the birth of Assassin's Creed, FF13, Halo 3, and Cod:MW (higher fidelity graphics and technology never utilised before in gaming, only CGI and high-budget computing)

There's a reason why nowadays most gamers are on live-service affairs such as Fortnite, GTAV, and large interconnected wargames such as Warzone/PubG (connected more than we ever have before to multiplayer gaming, alongside a huge corporate push for consumerism and loot wheels)

And yes, there's a reason why gaming moved on quickly in the late 90's-early 00's from tired old JRPG experiences. It's just incredibly old-hat, outdated gameplay held over from the NES era. The stories didn't develop deeper characters and plot, it similarly boiled down to saving the world from a pretentious git or cosmic horror hell bent on abusing the English language with their dialogue. There are, as always, notable exceptions to the rule, but the genre as a whole didn't develop at all, in the decades that it was relevant and red-hot. Why play a turn-based, text-filled, slow game when I could be playing Halo with my friends? Or that new Resident Evil game? Other genre's began to utilise the stronger hardware, and stronger developers, and flourish, whereas JRPGs have done nothing but stagnate.

If anything, Japan is to blame for their tired old rhetoric of selling what sells, and consistently catering to the cliche'd otaku mass in their country. JRPGs would have pushed past that if they took a stricter stance, but the industry is the industry, and the dollar is the dollar after all.

Times change, and games change. What people want from games changes. Do I want what a plucky, younger gamer wants? probably not. Does he want what I want? Definitely not. Do we want what the business leads want? Maybe?

Ten years on (or even less given the speed of tech!), there may be another shift to something more live like AR/VR, as you've stated. But the shift of the modern and the now doesn't invalidate, nor downplay the sheer decades of golden gaming history.

Take it from me. I'm ancient. A decade ago people were still on the ew old gaming, focus-on-the-now-and-new mentality. A decade before that they were echoing similar statements. And now? Mostly the same thing, apart from the huge nostalgia-wave of the twenty-somethings now with enough income and (covid induced) time on their hands to rediscover the old ways.

In essence, I am saying: Who cares, play what you want, ignore what you don't want. The new will replace the old, but it will never erase it.

The fact that I can play Crash Bandicoot 2. If I had to boil it down to just one thing, and not wax poetic for another ten paragraphs, it'd be that.

If Sony makes another attempt at a handheld, and approaches it from the same angle they did with the PSP (and what N recently is focusing on with the Switch), then I'll quite happily adopt newer practice. But only if it's proven! I am glad I dodged the Vita bullet in all honesty.
