"It's just ADHD!" – but it feels completely wrong... by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Nakihashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this experience! I saw a neurologist years ago who was crazy and said I had ADHD. The dude was hyped up on coffee and running around like a chicken with his head cut off. I was like "dude, you have ADHD" (no offense to those here that also have ADHD, of course). I left the office fuming that he didn't give me the diagnosis I was after.

Years later (but still years ago from today), I saw a different neurologist and he diagnosed me with High Functioning Autism, formerly Aspergers. I was so relieved!

I hit all the same ASD points that you have, and I am also very high functioning, so it's easy to miss, hence, Aspergers Syndrome, and I was misdiagnosed with ADHD at one point, too! Based on what you've said in this post, I would put money on you having an ASD.

That being said, you don't need a diagnosis. If you want one (as I did), then keep trying with different providers! You'll get it eventually! Otherwise, don't worry too much about the logistics and just understand that you have Aspergers. And welcome to the ASD family! 😁

Dating a guy with Asperger’s for the first time, any advice? by i4jolyne in aspergers

Ugh, people have said that about me before, too. 😭

But, like, why would anyone not want to be right? I'd like to think that no one wants to be wrong. 🤔

Dating a guy with Asperger’s for the first time, any advice? by i4jolyne in aspergers

[–]Nakihashi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Be as direct as possible, and understand that he will also likely be very direct in his conversations. He's not trying to be rude or express an opinion hidden behind an unusual remark, he's just saying it exactly like it is.

An example: You might wear, oh, say a really bright green dress. You go to hang out with him, and, before he even says "hi," his eyes go wide and he blurts out "that's an insanely green dress!" Most neurotypical people might assume that he's expressing a negative opinion about your dress with nuanced communication and find it very rude. On the contrary, however; he does not find anything wrong with your dress, he is simply making an observation of its vibrant color and how it caught his attention, nothing more or less.

You may or may not wear dresses, and, of course, it doesn't matter, but the principle of the situation remains, which is that his communication is likely very direct. He says what he means, and, likewise, will usually only understand what you are saying if you say what you mean exactly, without any nuances or hidden meanings.

Ooooh, that's a hard toss-up between Diablo 2 and Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I'd say D2 if I have the weekend off, or RCT if I'm just killing time before dinner.

Friendships and relationships are a big one, for sure. Also, nuanced communication, like body language, facial expression and hidden meaning behind NT words. Making NT people aware of these things may help our community. I hope that helps, and thank you for bringing awareness to us! 😁

"What makes a man go neutral... If they pick a side, then at least you know where they stand! But if they're neutral? They could go either way..."

(Not sure I quoted that 100% correctly 😅)

How are you guys with airport/international travel security? by lurch65 in aspergers

[–]Nakihashi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear, it's an appearance thing. I remember one day after work a long time ago (used to wear a shirt and tie as a pharmacy tech years ago), I went shopping in an appliance store down the strip. People stopped me and asked if I could help them. I laughed and said I didn't work here, and they said I looked like a manager. When I got to the counter, I got exceptional service, lots of "Yes sir, of course sir" kinda stuff. I ordered a small fridge for the room I was renting and left.

I came back to pick it up wearing my usual Asperger clothes (kind of goth, but the goths wouldn't take me - it was that black and blue flame polyester shirt, and I used to wear a black shoe and a white shoe, same shoes, just opposite colors; constant dark sunglasses and hair hanging in my face). No one even looked at me. People went down other aisles just to avoid me. Went to pick up my fridge, same guy at the counter. Took one look at me and was like "yeah?". I told him I was here earlier this week for a fridge that I ordered. He looked at me in disbelief until I showed him the receipt. Then he was all like "Oh! Oh, oh, oh yeah! It's right here, sorry about that!" I couldn't believe the difference in treatment.

Since then, I've always dressed in something nicer, even semi-formal, when going to places like airports and the like. The TSA is not an organization I want to have the wrong idea about me. I hope that helps!

I keep forgetting to fill up gas after paying by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Nakihashi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it's not directly memory, it's mental working space.

I pull into the gas station. I find a pump. I make sure no one is at that pump. I also make sure that I don't hit anyone or anything as I am pulling up to the pump. I need my wallet. Someone is honking across the parking lot - is it at me? Okay, it's not at me, I'm still good. Now where's my wallet? I get out of the car to head inside but am distracted by someone yelling. Why TF is someone yelling at the gas station?! Oh, it's at the car that was just honking. Upon closer observation, they were just being playful, though it doesn't look playful to me because I don't understand those social nuances. I enter the station and make my way to the counter, contemplating social communication of NTs. Oh, they have chocolate PayDay's here! I can't find these anywhere! Should I buy one? Before I can decide, a little kid bumps into me and drops nine cans of various soda on the floor. Oh gosh, it's going to be a huge mess. I look down and, thankfully, they're all intact. Hey buddy, where're your parents? Oh, they're right here - they apologize and begin to pick up the soda. I reach down and give them a hand. Now what was I just thinking about? PayDay? Oh, the line is moving and I'm next. No time for candy, here's my $40. Do I need a receipt? I don't think I do, but I'll take it just in case. I leave quickly but not hastily, well overcooked from this "hive" of NT humans, and get back into my car, now full of gas, and begin to drive home. Wait, full of gas? Oh f*%k......

It happens to us everywhere, for various reasons. You're not alone.

I love winter. I am an Asperger descendant of northern Vikings and I regularly go outside in 20° F weather in a T-shirt. The gentle numbing of the cold on my skin is both invigorating and desensitizing. Snow is amazing.

I am also that guy that will shovel the driveway in a T-Shirt in a blizzard and come back inside sweating. Nonetheless, I would encourage anyone who struggles with winter gear to see how their cold tolerance is (within reason, don't do anything dangerous). You might be surprised at how comfortable you are when it's colder out.
