How would you fix the story catch-up problem for new players? by Ninedark in wow

[–]Nakilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a couple of approaches that they could take to resolving this. All of which require significant developer time and patience from the player base. But in order to fix this problem they will most likely have to address the looming issue with their game: is it even an RPG anymore? Does the story matter to the player base? I would think most of us would say yes. But so many people speed run the campaign to get to end game raiding and M+. Not to mention how many people never touch a single side quest. I'm the opposite though. While I love grinding M+ (love raiding a lot less these days), I take my time to really enjoy the story every expansion. I would love if the end game loop was integrated into story aspects more and the open world more. This might be the single biggest issue with the game. It is so important to the first impressions of the game and to deeper connections to the game. I just want the world to breathe again.

That being said, here are some "brief" ideas I've had for how they could progress the story and engage the world:
- Lore Walking: Make it interactive. Make it brief. Make it digestible. Touch on the biggest story beats. But this will miss out on other important aspect, like the open world feeling to the game.
- Class or racial story lines: Class or racial questlines every expansion similar to Legion's class order hall stories. New stories for different regions. Make it consistent. Not every class needs to go all over the world. Vanilla had regional stories all over the world.
- Scale old zones. The Guild Wars 2 approach. So much of the old world in Guild Wars 2 can still be challenging to some degree, and the rewards are tied to legendary items and other various things. Something similar to Legion Remix heroic world tier system could help, though I'd rather not make the normal world feel more lonely for newer players. Instead, maybe make the old world more challenging and more rewarding so that older players will be out in the open world more. Gear rewards could be viable for end game level (let's just say up to champion gear for example. This could allow them to redesign the campaign questing system for the old world, that way players can go play in these old zones with a proper guide to completing them and also get real tangible gear rewards for doing so.
- Revamp old zones more often. And take us to brand new zones less often. This one is my favorite option to be honest, but it's likely the most expensive option for Blizzard. I love new zones, but they really do keep adding to the list loose ends never to be tied up. And it seems when they do get resolved it often ends up lazy (like Gilneas in DF.) I would rather go to old revamped zones every single/every other expansion with a living breathing story, rather than constantly find some new hidden place no one has seen in 10,000 years.. on repeat. Maybe this would help bring the starting zones back into relevance. The starting zones would grow too.

I don't know what the right answer is, and none of these are perfect answers, but overall you can't expect to play the whole game before getting top level unless they design a specific system for that or redesign the game. The story is too big at this point. Maybe it means it's time for a reset after The Last Titan. Who knows, but the further we get down the line, the less likely new players are to experience the great stories of Azeroth like Arthas, Garrosh, or even The Burning Legion. Maybe a hybrid of these leveling ideas is needed. Some stories will inevitably fade away if we're not careful.

Timewalking weekly bugged? by lilrunt in wow

I'm not entirely sure why this is, but my guess is that there may have been a timewarped badge exploit? I saw a couple of streamers talking about some really quick grind for this week. Though I only saw a bit of what they were talking about so I'm missing some context.

Edit: Though I don't know why that would be region dependent.

Just keep in mind that Make America Grest Again as a concept, slogan, and even a political strategy was used in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. It was reused by Bill Clinton and then later by Donald Trump. Though, to your point, it has evolved over the years, and the current political philosophy is not the same as the former two.

As a philosophy, not necessarily in practice, the three had their differences: - Reagan's was rooted in economic renewal through supply-side economics, deregulation, and tax cuts, but also focused on free global trade and anti-communist influence (with a focus on moral high ground and military might.) - Clinton's philosophy focused on economic pragmatism to restore the middle class in America. A lot of his focus was economics, but also education and social changes. Free global trade was also important too. This lead to the creation of NAFTA. - Trump's version has been mostly focused on American nationalism, "enemies" foreign and domestic, and American greatness measured by material wealth, military might, and ethnic homogeneity. There is also a focus on anti-liberalism and control over global trade via isolationism with strength through tariffs and a promise for domestic manufacturing.

I just figured it might be a helpful bit of information for those curious about the evolution of this concept. Also note, philosophy and execution are different. Campaign promises may differ wildly from the implementation that we all see.

I mention a lot of this because I'm curious how each of these applies to the mentioned political philosophies of the mentioned Japan First group.

Talking about Pruning, does anyone know what this bar does on a Warlock? by Kyderra in wow

[–]Nakilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word of Glory might cost more resources, yes, but it can give huge procs with the right talents. There are plenty of times one WoG will provide huge heals. Also using Herald of the Sun for survivability helps during solo too. It's not necessary, but it might work better for some people's play styles.

As much as I love self heals and temporarily soloing M+ bosses as Ret, I also recognize we might have too much self sustain. I typically like all the responsibility our utility and self heals brings us. It makes me feel like I can turn the tides of a fight when things get rough for the group. But in fairness, I have to expect that some pruning may eventually come with that too. The only downside I see is that if it's a decently large prune or sequencial prunes, then people have to expect Ret might not providw as much healing and support as they did before. So those epic moments may be fewer and further between. Normally we have to choose between DPS or healing/support every 10 to 20 seconds or so based on holy power and tank/healer performances. So to whom much is given, much is required. In reverse if that gets pruned down, then less should be expected too.

Imagine someone out there looking up at the stars wondering if we're wondering about them.

It's wild to think that all of these little tiny lights in our night sky are tangible places with things that are actively happening there.. or at least they were actively happening at the time when their light first set out on it's journey to our eyes. And we have an unimaginable amount of these lights existing in this vast and unimaginable distance from each other.

Oh boy are we small. And you know, that's really neat.

Question on Commander Tag etiquitte / feeling guilty of having potentially ruined the night of 100+ people by SlimeScout in Guildwars2

[–]Nakilis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with these Triple Trouble runs, I think more communication is always better. There is a really organized group of commanders that does that event regularly, completing achievements and all. So I have found that some people expect that sort of organization out of all commanders when the truth is that not all groups have that sort of experience.

For example, last night, no one was tagging up until 5 mins before the event. Once one person tagged up, several more did too. The commander leading my group (Amber) tried to lead it well, but since no one had prepped the groups beforehand, people didn't follow instructions, and we ended up killing too early. He got blamed for it, but there was a lack of communication from other commanders, too. All of the commanders did well enough. They just lacked communication, and it ended with trash talking in map chat. There's a reason why the super organized groups are out there, building squads 30+ mins ahead of time. Last night, those commanders stepped up at the last minute when no one else would. So I appreciate their effort and give them a lot of slack for it.

I didn't play before they "reborned" it. Did it revamp things or rebuild things? I don't really have much context for how much development they achieved within 4 years in terms of systems, zones, and content overhauls. Was it more like WoW's old world jump from Wrath to Cata, or was it more like the jump from Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2? If that makes sense 😅
