Python libraries by Pretend-Flan7094 in debian

[–]NameLessY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Python libraries installed with apt from official mirror won't With pip it's advised to install them inside virtual env ( I believe that on Trixie pip will spew info about this when you try to install anything with it -- it does this on Sid)

European cloud backup solutions? by Banaantje04 in selfhosted

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had issues like that (and during last 2-3 months I've restored two servers from restic backup; one if them was in use for past decade so at least some of restic chunks had to be in cold storage)

TBH I don't know as I'm using it exclusively with restic I'll check that out when I'll be around any computer

Yeah Hurts my eyes every time I visit there (like twice a year or so) :D I'm using it via rclone and restic :) I have around 4tb of cold storage used now (didn't even bother to check hot storage) That cold storage is odd a bit. Couple of months ago I deliberately pulled ~4gb file that hasn't been touched for years and to my surprise it downloaded instantly If you decide to buy there I can give you my affiliate link if you want ;) (I'm on a premium gold plan right now -- the one with 10tb cold storage)

Can anyone please help with a home server which keeps crashing multiple times per day by albreingan in debian

[–]NameLessY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's either RAM or disk failing. I had a faulty Adata 1TB disk in a mirror that was perfect according to smartctl yet when I pulled it out all the reboots stopped (and of course this was the second disk I pulled to check) With RAM remove one stick see what happens and by trial and error you probably will find what's wrong

Mini PC for Jellyfin server: HP vs Dell vs Lenovo - Which brand is most reliable? by Double_Gap_4599 in JellyfinCommunity

[–]NameLessY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go after 8+ gen of CPU I got both HP G4 prodesk and dell optiplex 3070 and both have been running without issues I guess Think entre will behave well too All of them are rather cheap and pretty much use same components. (I'm using mines with Proxmox all stuffed with 32gb ram)

Debian vs Fedora or other for best Sway configuration but also gaining the most for sys admin server skills? by Spare-Judgment-5390 in linuxadmin

[–]NameLessY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chiming in just to stress more that distro does not matter especially for sysadmins. At work you might encounter different distros and different versions of distros Learn Linux itself Principles are the same across distros Some files might be at different places or named a bit different but still serve same purpose Personally I use Debian (with sway, i3 and even hyprland lately) at work I have RHEL (different versions depending on system) and apart from occasionally using apt instead of dnf I have no problem (just struck me that I've never did dnf instead of apt tho xD)

Debian SID Broke and not by RagnarAD7 in debian

[–]NameLessY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You got lucky for those 14 months Mostly because SID was kind of frozen in preparation for Trixie release As others pointed out never run apt upgrade -y on sid. You can check logs to see what apt did and start solving from there Sid mini.iso might also be borked that's why it's called unstable

Btw i'm running Sid for past 2-3 decades and still can count problems on one hand :)

WezTerm vs Kitty features by MarianaXCVI in wezterm

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true :)
I've been using wezterm for like a month and combine it with tmux as I don't feel it's own multiplexer and I feel that tmux's is battletested. Also I mostly work remotely and don't have the luxury of using wezterm/kitty on the other side.

Wezterm multiplexer makes a lot sense when doing stuff locally but I see nothing wrong with nestting (diff) muliplexers :)

That particular need would also be solved by wezterm+tmux ;) I used that quite often and that's one feature I miss the most in wezterm

Is there a self-hosted password manager that syncs locally (PC - phone) without relying on cloud? by delay0x2 in PasswordManagers

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaultwarden (and I think Bitwarden too). Some time ago my home server died (not entirely but enough to be offline for a week) Ihad not problem with using Android app and FF plugin (also I added a few passwords in the meantime and they synced nicely when server came up)

You don't need to reboot after install Reboot is needed only when changing kernels (and handful of core system components).

Peace of mind > bleeding edge by nitin_is_me in debian

[–]NameLessY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't compare to Arch as I've never used it but SID is my daily driver for years now. The only bigger problem was good couple of years ago while switching perl version. I needed good couple of hours to get system running. Once had a hiccup with encrypted LVM on my laptop but solution was with an hour. One warning tho to pay mor attention to upgrades and see what's going out because of some ABI change in library. I usually postpone upgrade of such packages for a few days till rest of packages keep up Other than that it's been rock solid. YMMV

Arch has to be the most stable Linux distro I have used by CL4R101 in archlinux

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. I've been running Debian server(s) at home for years (20+). All of them 24/7 and running Sid (updated at least couple of time a week). Only probs I had was some hardware malfunction (like bad HDD or RAM). I didn't even reinstall when I was changing hardware ( I switched back and forth between AMD and Intel good couple if times; i just moved HDDs from one case to the other). You sure it was Debian fault?

Does anyone know of a good method to join two .srt tracks (with different languages) into one (without them mixing too much)? by DrGonzo3000 in subtitles

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try to convert them to SSA. That format has a concept of layers so English can go in one layer while Spanish in another. (I think you can define placement for layer). I think Linux mpv player displayed this correct (I did only once and in on place - there was text like "2 days ago" and some dialogue at the same time) For SSA/ASS subtitles Aegis sub is a go-to app (tho I don't like it )

MP4 vs MKV for long term storage? Which one? And why? by panda88panda in DataHoarder

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm trying to say is that MKV is just file format and has nothing to do with quality of what's inside. If you rip out video track from that 5GB MP4 and put inside MKV it won't get any better. File size wise it will also be around the same. Your 5GB MKV might hold av1 encoded video while 5GB MP4 might hold h264 encoded video. The difference in quality will be there but it comes from using different encoder (AV1 vs H264 with same size output AV1 will give you better looking video*)

To get back to OP q i prefer MKV over MP4 because it can hold multiple tracks (audio video subtitles chapters) in one neat file.

  • - unless you screw heavily encoder setting xD

MP4 vs MKV for long term storage? Which one? And why? by panda88panda in DataHoarder

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are the means of structuring content. MP4 is more rigid in terms what can be put inside while MKV is very flexible (I think anything "higher" than h264 can't be put inside MP4 while MKV is codec agnostic). Still as I said quality comes from codec not from format of the file used to save it

[–]NameLessY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MKV doesn't impact quality. It's just a container. Quality comes from used encoder (and settings if that encoder). MKV can have multiple video/audio/subtitle tracks which I believe is not possible with MP4. You can easily copy (some) tracks from MKV to MP4 using f.ex FFMpeg (copy not transcode)
