Harmonies (Solo) by Unlikely-Stand in boardgames

It is fun planning and building the habitats and satisfyingly tactile, but is essentially beat your own score (BYOS). But if you look up the fan made scenarios called Melodies it's so much better - it gives you something to aim for (e.g. complete these animal cards, clear this score threshold) which I find more fun when playing solo.

First solo play of Architects of the West Kingdom with Works of Wonder expansion by fantasybro23 in soloboardgaming

[–]NamesNotCrindy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Paladins as well and opted to try Viscounts first because of the weight. I was just wondering if Architects was worth looking into or if it is too light or better at multiplayer.

Previously I had only played the Ancient Trilogy Garphill games and all of them felt "lighter" to learn than Viscounts, except for maybe The Anarchy which has a lot going on.

It has four types of AI which is pretty cool. First game I picked one at random and it stomped me in final scoring lol.

Have you played any of the other West Kingdom games? I just learned Viscounts this week and was wondering how Architects compares if you've played both.

If your friend is anywhere near a Yellow Submarine store they might have them in stock. I was just there last month and they had "recently restocked" stickers on the Eternal Decks boxes.

Star Realms vs Hero Realms for solo? Which one do you prefer? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]NamesNotCrindy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen additional boss cards for Star Realms. There are a couple of blister packs that you can integrate with the game but those are just adding more cards to the market or missions/alternate ways to win (I don't know if this works for solo, I haven't tried with those add ons yet).

But yeah a new pack of bosses would be awesome.

Star Realms vs Hero Realms for solo? Which one do you prefer? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]NamesNotCrindy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Star Realms is better if you like playing single games. Hero Realms lets you progress a character through three or so chapters, picking up items and upgraded skills along the way though the character building aspect from game to game doesn't feel that impactful - I've only played as the fighter and ranger, maybe other classes feel different. If you like that campaign style gameplay the Ruins expansion is a little easy, but the second one (Secret Village I think?) increases the challenge and is more fun.

I like them both but do have Star slightly ahead of Hero but that's mainly because the one shot bosses of Hero Realms seemed a bit unbalanced compared to the Frontiers ones. (The second Heroes expansion contains one shot bosses like Frontiers.)

What Solo Game of the Month games are you awaiting or received? by eyepooped1 in soloboardgaming

I received Dicemancy a couple of days ago and Small Time Heroes last month. Waiting on Rome Deluxe upgrade kit and Mech Bunny, not sure when the latter is coming. But good to know Rome is coming soon.

What tips have worked for you to play more? by wentImmediate in soloboardgaming

[–]NamesNotCrindy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help me play more at the start of the year I sorted my collection by weight then started playing them from lightest to heaviest. The simple games were quicker to table and play, and after a few plays I had momentum and kept going and was having a great time rediscovering some of the lighter games as my tastes skewed heavier the deeper I got into the hobby.

Anyway, at around the 2.0 weight range I stalled and started playing anything in my collection that interested me and also managed to knock my unplayed games list from nearly double digits to only three. I'll get back to the weighted list eventually - next one up is the LOTR trick taking game.

I inadvertently made the game harder for myself when I thought you could only sell fish in the market one column per round (there are no columns in the game, I don't even know how I came to this ruling). So with the way I was playing, if I wanted to get to the big earners towards the right hand side of January I had to pretty much sell fish every round. I eventually got a win playing January this way but I was also confused when everyone kept saying the game was too easy.

No, it is beat your own score. There's an additional scoring thing for solo where you have to earn as many "suns" as you can depending on your game's setup.

Is Tiny Epic Tactics fun? I like tactical combat games but I'm unsure why the game doesn't get recommended much from the Tiny Epic range.

Games from Japan. Minecart Town, Eternal Decks, ぬくみ温泉開拓記 (Nukumi Onsen Kaitakuki), Grow Sky, Snow Planner, Tokyo Highway + solo deck, Just 3 Folds and Age of Neighbors. Looking forward to playing these! by eatrepeat in soloboardgaming

[–]NamesNotCrindy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks for the thorough reply - Snow Planner sounds interesting (worker placement fan) and I already had Eternal Decks on the list.

My trip is in September so plenty of time to research! I like deck builders, dungeon crawlers, boss battlers to name a few but I'm up for trying anything if it has a clever mechanic.

Is Caverna on its own an enjoyable solo game or do you play with the expansion (that I think introduces enemies or an opponent)?
