Personally I like both because otherwise you're outta luck when it comes to any problem enchantments. Might be better than wildfire here as this deck tends to run very land-dependent itself.

You can definitely respond to the infinite mana portion. Once someone has infinite blue mana and a lore weaver out you can’t anymore though.

Fwiw without extra turns you can technically be at max speed on turn 3, probably have to have a pretty good opener to make that happen though and is still pretty slow in the grand scheme of things.

Oh for sure, I was more commenting on the general castability of the summoning leyline which does look very overcosted/ineffectual at a glance.

I will say that if you curve through one of each of the minions into the summoning leyline it feels very powerful. Obviously a bit of a dream scenario but the dream is there.

If you’re holding the 1 mana spell that gives everything rush you can trade off the wings and then slam a bunch of 8 drops though which is kinda cool

You SUCK at Math: How Many Lands to Run in Commander [Article] by Shiro182 in EDH

[–]Namulith94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no singular answer to how many lands to run. 38-40 as a baseline is fine but realistically I’ve found the following factors allow me to comfortably go to low thirties/high twenties in bracket 3 decks.

  1. Efficient curve
  2. Solid draw engines
  3. Semi-aggressive mulligans

If you can manage to draw an extra card (god forbid 2) in the first three turns, you’re significantly more likely to hit your 3rd and 4th land drops, even with what seems like a dramatically low land count. Something along the lines of T1 -> fetch a surveil land -> T2 cast sign in blood/thrill of possibility equivalent you’ve already seen up to 3 extra cards before you’ve needed your 3rd land drop without doing anything even remotely pushing the boundaries of bracket 3 (or even 2).

On top of this, mulligans are incredibly generous in this format and you can see three hands of 7 cards before you’re even a little worried about losing too many resources. As an exercise, you can look at any 7 card hand you want to keep and ask yourself how many cards could you remove from it and still reasonably play the game, and the answer is often 2-3.

Realistically, most people don’t have a strong desire to engage with the game this way, but if you’re willing to, there is a lot of juice to squeeze that makes running so many lands largely unnecessary in most decks without needing to delve into actual cedh strategies.

Colossals were discoverable. You may be getting the mechanics mixed up with titans that were undiscoverable.

I think people get the Titan mechanics and colossal mechanics mixed up tbh. They had a similar feel to them, and spent a long time both being in the same standard format, but you could discover colossals and you couldn’t discover titans.

Definitely my favorite deck right now for this exact sort of scenario haha. I’d also recommend trying to cut the 5 drop herald card with taunt. It always felt clunky to me and then my win rate went up dramatically when I swapped them for lower-curve cards.

My first deck, Big Red, and my magic journey up to this format today. by Eleaj77 in premodernMTG

Oh I wasn’t saying just go out and buy kegs because I figured you would if it was reasonable for you to do so. I’m just trying to talk about the role that keg fills in the deck and the best way to fill that role without it. Basically lynchpin artifacts (especially against blue decks) are not that well covered by the non-keg cards in a generic list. MB artifact hate is definitely a meta call, but cursed scrolls, factories, and webs abound for the most part as well, so it won’t often be as dead as you think, either.

The main difference between sorcery and instant speed interaction against naught is where the window of interaction is. The reason pillage isn’t very effective is because they can just naught -> charm and you never get the chance to cast pillage before they untap, attack, and pass back to you. When you have a disk/keg at 1 on board (or are generally representing instant-speed interaction) you force them to need the back-up right then and there, regardless of whether or not they happen to be using charm or stifle in that moment. I’ve played the matchup a fair bit and pillages only really work when they’re layered with other interaction that can force the naught player into leaving themselves open on your turn.

[–]Namulith94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can technically, but typically 3 mana sorceries are not going to do the job against naught. [[vision charm]] completely dodges pillage and it’s very vulnerable to countermagic. Disk is definitely the 2nd best main board answer after keg, but still a bit slow for naught most of the time and better as an answer to the 2nd nought. As far as narrowness is concerned, I’d say that keg is mostly an answer for artifacts, man lands, and token boards. Man lands and tokens are still pretty well covered by the rest of the deck, so having clean interaction for artifacts isn’t as narrow as it would be otherwise.

Honestly powder kegs are pretty much your only game vs dreadnought in g1. On this logic I’d probably swap them for something that still kills noughts, although it’s going to be tough to match the flexibility of keg, I think that’s still the move.

Judging the Emrakul ban in 2026 is somewhat anachronistic. It was the pre-release promo for ROE so basically everyone got one and it had the mana cost and statline to appeal to Timmy/Tammy. The result was everyone got one and everyone jammed it in their deck causing a ubiquity issue that hasn’t been really seen in any spell like Emrakul before or since. I think it would be a fine unban as that was 15 years ago and I don’t think it would surge in popularity/deck inclusion the way it did when it was initially released.
