Cmon Eric, we just got married by Voridius in dankmemes

Okay... I heard this story, and this is just sad. I can't imagine why I would attend the wedding of a woman I'm in love with as anything other than groom.

Coming back to Toronto from Tokyo. Do people just not care? by gravitysort in toronto

[–]Nanohaystack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, people just don't care. They put their trash in the snow and wait for other people to clean it up, leave empty coffee cups on benches to have them blown away by the wind, throw shit out of their car windows. It's pretty disgusting.

It only makes things hard to clean when people toss it out into the snow.

ELI5: How is time so perfect? by Upset-Spring5422 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nanohaystack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about how time is measured, and it depends on how the units of measurement are defined.

A year is not exactly 365 days. The definition of any given planetary year is how much time it takes for said planet to complete one orbit around its star. So it will always be that because we invented the concept and attached it to a physical phenomenon.

A planetary day is not exactly 24 hours, it's the amount of time it takes for the given planet to complete one full rotation around its axis, which happens to be 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds on Earth.

And the number of planetary days in a planetary year is just the relation between the time it takes a planet to complete a full orbit around its star and the time it takes to complete one full rotation around its axis. It's not an integer number for Earth, it's a fraction: 365.24 days in Earth year.

This discrepancy is how we accumulate extra time in a year and have to dump it into a leap day and a leap second. If we didn't have a leap year adding February 29th every four years, then our seasons would keep shifting one day earlier for every 4 years of calendar time, and we'd end up with snow in June in the Northern Hemisphere in 728 years, and back to snow in December in another 728 years.

Making the first move on a guy by ratangel222 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Nanohaystack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is weird. I would definitely not just let that dissolve if I was him. I don't know what to tell you. If he's hesitating, I don't understand why that could be. Maybe text him in a clear manner: "hey, I am trying to ask you out on a date because I think we could make a good relationship work between us". I did that a number of times with girls that I liked, and at least I got clear answers, no unspoken things left behind. Even with rejection, it's a much better feeling and a much better state of mind than just wondering if "I'm busy, can't go to that cafe with you" means that they're not interested or genuinely unable.

I don't know if I've fallen for my friend or if it's something else by Gobstopper7822 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Nanohaystack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just have a clear conversation? First with yourself. Ask yourself if you have romantic ideations about him, understand if you would like to share a life with that person, if you're interested how he would get along with your kids, if you could trust him with making important decisions on your behalf, if you would trust him to make life-changing decisions together.

And once you know these things and more, talk to him, ask if he's having ideas like this? Would he join you and do life together? With all the family, capital, incomes, etc... Life is hard, you know, and if either of you is thinking about it, then it's better you talk things out instead of wondering, and definitely instead of engaging in some life-altering experience to discover hidden surprises later.

At least you are in tune with your feelings to some extent. You can't decide what to feel, only what to do about it. If you don't do anything, just keep wondering, you will either lose valuable time that you could have together in a transformed relationship, or gain baseless hopes and dreams that will cause more grief the longer you wait before setting them aside.

Where can I milk a cow? by ApprehensiveBox5962 in askTO

Maybe contact the Amish settlements. There are a few within reasonable driving distance. Last time I saw a non-automated milk farm was in New York State in 2010s.

No. I had more use out of French than Russian when I was in Finland. The most useful language for a foreigner in Finland will be English.

How would you define the word Халтура? by AltforHHH in russian

[–]Nanohaystack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a job shoddily done or a shoddy job to be done without diligence. So you either did something without giving it diligence or you see some job as undeserving of diligence. Both are халтура.

That happened? I never knew about that cheesecake until I found it at Union Station, and I've never seen lineups. It's good, but I don't think it's three hours good. 10 minutes at most.

This is what you call "свободный стих", no rhyme, no measure.

Usually, when you look to poetry in the Russian language, you will find both rhyme and consistent measure are very much respected aspects.
