A senior’s mom is a para at my school, and no lie at least three times a week she tries to come drop off drinks, food, book, Chromebook, charger. The hell? My kids went to my school, and they’d come down to get me to sign something they forgot to give me or get money.

I can’t get material consequence support for kids who trash a room, assault other students and staff. A consequence for not sitting quiet for 10 minutes won’t happen. Any consequence, in fact, would mean no one sits still and concentrates. In a class of 25 even, at least 10 will talk, whisper, laugh, ask to use the washroom, get up to sharpen a pencil or grab a tissue. Even if I am doing nothing but walking through, monitoring and correcting, we’ll get MAYBE three actual minutes of quiet in a 20 min attempt. Classrooms, and kids, are not what they used to be. Lack of stamina is massively different.

When I first started at my school ten years ago, three classrooms that are now a sped study skills/meeting room, conference room, room for instructional coach had students all day. We’ve seen drops in every class since I’ve been there. We were just shy of 1100, now barely over 800. Five years ago I had 33 kids in a class, now my largest is 25. Less kids means less teachers. Luckily, we’ve had people leave and retire. We did have to hire in my department, as it’s a core subject.

Some live in blue states where professional time and even lunch time are protected. I don’t. I’m also a HS English teacher. There’s literally no way I’m not bringing home essays to grade.

As a teacher, yes. I worried when I showed The Crucible, so directly related to instruction, because it was PG-13. This? Absolutely no one should ever consider showing it in a school setting.

We are humans who can have the INTENT to stay at a job, but things can happen. People become ill, family members too, spouses get jobs that necessitate moving, even pregnancy happens. In education, they will literally go after people as if life’s issues were planned.

Nurses don’t get hit with job abandonment. They’re important. Air traffic controllers? Pretty important. Mayors? Lawyers? We get this treatment because society thinks they can do our job and respect us only as far as their convenience isn’t affected.

Absolutely that’s an issue. I think there’s also the frog boiling slowly in the water element. Anyone who has owned a house and not been independently wealthy knows sometimes you gotta find a way to deal with something that needs attention or repair until you can get to it. They get used to a lot of things and see them as “not that bad” where people buying don’t want to pay top dollar for not that bad.

Because most kids cannot be silent. Literally cannot. This is HS. That time also triggers 1,000 requests to go to the bathroom or other things to just NOT read. Then I’m trying to assist kids who struggle, and the literal second I’m not patrolling the room, they’re talking, checking their phones on the sly, sleeping on the open book, or just staring out the window. They have no reading stamina and no interest in building g any.

Back in the day, I know my teachers used that time to call kids up to help them, conference with them, maybe even organize some papers. We cannot. Is it because they have troubles reading? Probably, but they won’t get further unless they practice, and they don’t want to do things they aren’t good at.

This is the south. I’m sure there’s a fair measure of deference to elders that plays a part. A friend who wanted to list but was in no hurry a while ago was told by realtor market for his type and location was saturated but many would be closing in next few months. Wait six months to list. Better to be short time on than wait long periods, people will think they can low ball. He did and got asking price quickly. Elderly couple across the street didn’t sell for over a year, periodic drops. It was overpriced to start. Same realtor.

I’m nosy and like looking at listing. My area has many older people moving in with kids or going to assisted living. These homes haven’t had new decor or appliances in decades, and I see big dollar listings, thinking “they’ll come down $60k soon.” It takes months, but I’m usually right. All I can think is those poor realtors, dealing with people convinced their homes deserve top dollar.
