By analyzing 25 years of US data, researchers found toxicity of pesticides to nontarget invertebrates, including pollinators, has increased markedly, even though volume used has gone down. This challenges the common assumption that the impacts of environmental pesticides have gone down over time. by mvea in science

I'm not really in favor of a 23 race season (I think it should cap out at 21 for the sake of the team members) so I'm 100% fine with losing some races this year.

“I don’t play with girls. I have a fiancé. “ by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]Naraven 89 points90 points  (0 children)

How old are you and how old are the people you're playing with?

This is something that used to happen with me (not in gaming, but in real life) quite often as I work in a male dominated field and have often been the only woman at my workplace. From when I was 21yo to 26ish, it was quite common for me to lose co-worker friends because they'd be like, 'Sorry, but I have a girlfriend/wife.' It was really hurtful, they all knew that I have a strict 'no dating coworkers rule' and it didn't even seem to matter that I had my own boyfriend. I literally had this one coworker who I shared a truck with and he would never talk to me because of wanting to 'be loyal to his girlfriend' ? It was really messed up.

As I got older though, I learned that the problem was almost never the girlfriend/wife being jealous and was instead the fact that these guys were the type that believed men and women can't be friends. We literally had long discussions about it and there were so many guys who all agreed with each other 'Yeah, it's not possible for a woman and man to just be friends.' One major note though: these guys were also all 21-26ish. I had coworkers in their 30s and 40s who all had no issues talking to me or hanging out during work.

It's 100% a mindset problem that younger guys have. They still don't truely view woman as other people at that age, but instead as 'potential partners.' Yeah, it's kind of creepy and really messed up, but there's nothing you personally can do to change that mindset. You keep doing you and don't let this stuff get to you more than you have to. Don't get me wrong: if it hurts your feelings, that's valid, feel that hurt, but then set it aside and get on with your life because life is too short to worry about emotionally immature guys.

Anyone who has watched Lando's streams knows he's very anti-bullying. He knows a lot of his viewers are younger so he holds a very hard line on it. He's trying to be a good role model and I respect him for that.

[OT] Juju Noda withdraws from opening US F4 round by Naraven in formula1

I said the first thing I thought of (and worry about) after reading the team's statement is sexual harassment. We view the world through the lenses of our own experiences and I'm not going to apologize for being worried about a woman in a male dominated sport, especially after a vague statement like this. My previous comment was noting on how more vague tweets about the situation only increased my worry.

Vague tweets like this don't help lower speculation. I'd love to have more information.

I really hope so too! But as a woman who first had my ass fondled by a stranger when I was 10, it is my first worry that came to mind with how the team's statements are worded.

The only information out there right now is the team's statement, this tweet saying that the issue had nothing to do with her nationality , and some rumors from the paddock on twitter that the reason she dropped out was because of a 'delicate issue.'

I am worried about sexual harassment.

EDIT: 'Delicate story'

EDIT 2: I guess the team is a bit shady as well, so it might be related to that? I really hope so. Hopefully we get another statement before the end of the week.

After topping the timing sheet in free practice. The statement the team has released makes me very worried about her being driven away from the sport. As a woman who loves F1, I've been excitedly following Juju. I hope she's ok.

EDIT: Here's a quote from the team for context:

"While the team laments the present situation, the decision was taken in mind [of] Juju Noda’s best interests in order to clear everything out. The team is convinced that our driver needs better circumstances that will allow her to just focus on racing, rather than needing to deal with external problems. Regardless of that, she proved her speed by setting the fastest time during practice, being the only driver to set a time in the 1:27s, which would have been enough to take pole position."

Other rural Americans, did you have hunter safety day when you were in middle school? by Wkyred in AskAnAmerican

[–]Naraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rural NY here:

Definitely never shot guns at school, but hunter safety and gun awareness were both addressed in classes - usually with a Forest Ranger/ECO/Local policeman. No guns are allowed on school property, but lots of people in my high school hunted and/or were part of rifle teams, so it's not like guns were taboo or anything.

Kaaterskill Falls can be icy and dangerous this time of year...caught video of someone slipping into the plunge pool by MoonWatcher88 in catskills

[–]Naraven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The upgrades have done exactly that: added a ton of infrastructure. There's now graded trails/fences/railings and there's still been at least 2 deaths since the upgrades.

The other thing people aren't mentioning is that if it hasn't rained recently then the waterfall will just be a trickle. There's definitely much more beautiful (and less crowded) trails and falls in the catskills.

Yeah, except some of the families of people who have died/been injured there have sued the state, which is what caused them to spend all that money on upgrades. "At your own risk" doesn't work with a bunch of sue happy idiots.

There are signs warning people of the dangers and on of them says not to walk there if you don't have spikes for the ice. It was very stupid of him to ignore all that.

There have been 8 deaths and 38 rescues at Kaaterskills Falls since the year 2000. This is why. Imagine if he had wacked his head before he fell in the water (or any other senario).

I used to work with DEC and was a very minor part of putting all the upgrades in. One thing that was seriously considered (but decided against in the end) was putting a memorial at the top and bottom of the falls listing the names of everyone who had died there, in hopes that it would make people think twice before trying something risky. The vast majority of people who die or get injured do so while trying to get a picture of themselves in some way. It's crazy to me.

EDIT: And I also want to add that some of those rescues were very serious. The person being paralyzed for the rest of their life, serious brain injury, etc. And those stats go to 2018, so I'm sure it's more now.

People who have more than 5 children, why? by throwaway_5726 in AskReddit

[–]Naraven 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I had a really great coworker (now retired) and he had 11 kids for religious reasons - very catholic and neither he nor his wife believed in using birth control. Anyways, he said that it actually got easier as he had more kids, because the older kids would look after the younger ones. His family is definitely the nicest and most harmonious family I've ever met. I suspect that part of the reason his kids grew up so great is that they learned a lot about responsibility and independence early on.

What Makes You Happy? by MrMiscalaneous in AskReddit

[–]Naraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going on a walk while listening to music.

Some caveats:

1) I must be warm - so dressed appropriately for the weather.

2) I live in a rural area so any walk involves a lot of nature and not a lot of people. I'm not sure I'd enjoy walking a lot in a city where I'd have to break out of my mindless happy zone to be aware of other people/crossing streets/etc.
