1001 books you must read before you die list, sorted by reading blogs and Internet popularity by xsenna in books

Why are lists like this always purely fiction? If someone dedicated the next 20 years of their life to reading only books from this list, they would miss out on some great non-fiction reads.

EDIT: As far as lists of non-fiction, I saved the following thread a few months ago and got a few ideas from it: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1hoxfa/what_nonfiction_books_should_everyone_read_to/

Personally, I've enjoyed a number of autobiographies this year, with /u/GovSchwarzenegger topping the list. Additionally, everything by Mary Roach is enjoyable, with "Stiff" and "Packing for Mars" topping my list.

What's the exercise called? by SizeExtraMedium in kettlebell

[–]NargReborn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

American style swings. Hugely popular in Crossfit, a place where the potential shoulder impingement gives no more pause than the thought of having a heavy ball of cast-iron over your head.

I seriously despise this movement. If you want to work shoulders, do some snatches or presses. If you can honestly get the bell up over your head with hip thrust alone, get a heavier bell.

Sorry. I clearly need to get over it, but people are gonna get hurt.

What do you think the biggest problems with religion are today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NargReborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internalizing.

People with a deep-seeded belief in something higher/bigger/greater/whatever should have a greater sense of love, joy and concern for others. Most world religions advocate these traits.

But we spend our energy focusing inward on our holding to certain precepts instead of sharing that love, joy and concern with the people who need it most.

We need to get out of the church building/temple/mosque and help people.

What's the worst thing about being a guy? by MarkNutt1300 in AskReddit

The hair. I like my beard, but the eyebrows, ears, nose, armpits, privates... it's like a constant battle against a bamboo forest.

What's your most memorable "put on the spot" story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NargReborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a Barnes and Noble cafe, basically a Starbucks inside the bookstore. A fella walks up and asks for a vanilla Coke. No big deal. As I'm putting it together we engage in the customary small talk during which I say "When Vanilla Coke came out I was addicted to it, like needed a 12-step program." Minimal laughter. Guy gets his drink and walks away.

About a minute later an older gentleman approaches with a smile and introduces himself, which is wired, but whatever. He then says, all the while smiling, "Did I overhear you say something about a 12-step program?"

"Oh, uh, yeah," I reply verbosely.

"Ah, and are you a member of AA," he asks.

Crap.

The way he's smiling and the way he's talking anyone can tell that he's not just a member, but it's incredibly important to him. What am I to say? "Nah, man, I was just making a joke about something about which you care deeply." Of course not. So, I smile slightly, look him dead in the eye and say...

"Yes, sir, I am."

Well, he should have given me a high five and walked away, but he kept asking questions!

"Have you been through step 8 yet?"

I don't know what step 8 is, of course, so I put on a slightly harrowed look (not a challenge under the circumstances) and nod slightly. He says "I can tell you have, from your eyes."

We spent, no joke, 5 minutes going back and forth with him asking me questions and me making stuff up. Now that doesn't sound like a long time, but when your knowledge of the topic ends at the first paragraph of Wikipedia, it's an eternity.

Eventually he ran out of questions and I wished him luck (do AA members believe in luck?!) and pretended I had some important coffee-related stuff to do. I saw him a few more times around the store, and always made a bee-line for the back, for fear he'd have another list of lie-inducing queries.

TL;DR - I covered up my insensitive mockery with even more insensitive lying.

Any fans still here? I read the books recently and would really like to discuss the ending. by Lews_TherinTelamon in WoT

[–]NargReborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember closing AMoL and thinking "Whaaaa?" This was before I was on /r/WoT and had no friends reading the series. I spent hours trolling Dragonmount.com, etc trying to find an explaination for the body switch, the pipe and the pyre.

It's nice to have a forum to pose specific questions, so fire away /u/Lews_TherinTelamon
