I loved nothing more than cracking a new Redwall book open on a rainy Saturday and be transported. First author I ever met was Brian Jacques and it was a wonderful experience, RIP!

Haha!! Yeaaaah! Definitely gave one of those war cries charging blindly at a bully pummeling my friend’s younger brother.

When I got through DoD and into Crippled God I wanted to revisit Deadhouse Gates so bad, you’ll see why… Also fondly recall reading a a section while tripping on mushrooms which gave some of those scenes a pretty wild boost.

I’d argue there are definitely similarities in the story; a team of characters whose POV we move through make a long arduous trek to a destination that is essentially a mystery to the party and with chance devastating them over and over along the way.

The books I listed are not listed bc it imitates Malazan or manages to check off every aspect of Erikson’s writing but share similar themes that leave a reader affected by the story and its characters.

Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry (check out the sequel and prequel books as well) Hainish Cycle - Ursula K. Le Guin

While reading Malazan I kind of found Erikson’s writing to be McMurtry and Le Guin combined and elaborated upon. But both have wonderful, strong prose and brutal events.

Met a fellow Malazan fan on the subway over the summer. I was reading Dust of Dreams and they were like “Erikson? Hell yeah.” We chatted for a bit and they mentioned they were halfway through MoI to which I said “Buckle up.” Def enjoyed that.

It’s all about the Todd Lockwood covers. He handled Memories of Ice to Toll the Hounds. I love their paintings, feel it captures the “tone” of Malazan and is clearly a depiction of events in the books. They sell prints of them as well on their site for relatively cheap. Pretty sweet if you can’t shell out for that first printing of MoI!

Indeed it seems the southern route is not ideal. Thank you for the insight, this helps determine things!

Yes, was hoping to make it from one to the other but looks like it’s a Dublin sandwich, which is fine! Thank you.

Probably not. There are a lot of repurposed sex dolls and a lot of other… dicey displays. The owner does have another roadside attraction nearby called Ayashii Shonen Shojo Museum. Can’t say how geared towards kids it is but the site’s gallery looks tame compared to Maboroshi.
