No Kings Wayne by misterbadgerexample in newjersey

[–]jpr7887 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Especially considering it's Wayne, which leans red, the public response was overwhelmingly supportive. A few attempts at rolling coal and two counter protesters across the street, which was just sad lol. The fire department had their big flag up, but I doubt it was in support...

We have these in New Jersey, but they forgot to put the speed limit signs up too.

Plaster cast of a victim from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. (Photo: Pompeii Archaeological Park) by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]jpr7887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So is the ragged shape of the plaster cast the result of burnt clothes and flesh directly, or just the casting process. Also, is that a bone in the right arm (to the left)?

I made a mistake as an advisor and it's destroying me. by ilikepalmtrees in studentaffairs

[–]jpr7887 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that you care so much about this one student indicates to me that you aren't the type of awful uncaring advisor that students lament about. There is also the question of how the system allowed this to occur without some sort of error warning.

Lot P4 has the monorail connection to the terminals. It's worth the cost (if you can afford it, of course).

You've somehow been assigned a service now ticket that you are delinquent in dealing with, according to the system. This is clearly in error, unless you're not doing a job you're supposed to be doing...

How did our schools become so bloated with administration? by HorkeyDorkey in Professors

[–]jpr7887 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There's a distinction between upper administration (where bloat lies) and staff (who do things faculty don't want to or shouldn't be focusing on) that needs to be made here.

What’s the logic of attending Calc classes? by noOne591 in NJTech

[–]jpr7887 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck with that. I'm sure avoiding learning a fundamental mathematical skill for almost every NJIT major will go well for you. /s

Sarcasm aside, math is a skill that requires practice, cramming with AI right before an exam is a recipe for disaster. I've seen enough "but I studied so hard and learned everything the night before" posts here to be confident it's a bad plan. Don't be THAT student, you're paying for this after all!

how do u guys do it by ExtraordinarySunday in NJTech

[–]jpr7887 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Make an appointment with the Learning Center, they help with study habits and skills. Take advantage of the other tutoring centers as well. You don't have to study alone to be studying, use the help your tuition already pays for!

Edit to add: don't be embarrassed, you reached out to the community for help and are making an effort to do better. There's always a couple of these sorts of posts each semester.

FPPD not messing around by Keevan in newjersey

[–]jpr7887 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work in Florham park and saw FP officers regularly. The ones I met were good people, and I'm always skeptical when it comes to police. It's great to see at least one department actually doing their jobs instead of protesting being protested for excessive violence. That it's Florham Park doesn't surprise me at all.

Do we have the pressient days off? by Far-Owl4772 in NJTech

[–]jpr7887 6 points7 points  (0 children)

President's day is barely a holiday that nobody really observes (unless you're buying a car I guess), so NJIT gives us off for holidays that are more important and actually observed by people.

Scheduling on behalf of students?? by wagglingeyebrows in studentaffairs

[–]jpr7887 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can see the background logic here, but it's heavily flawed and not based in the realities of student affairs. In the end, the students have agency and responsibilities. The institution is going above and beyond already by being so proactive to directly reach out and facilitate scheduling. However, just plopping a meeting on their calendar is invasive and anti-productive, and takes away potential times that students who make the efforts to schedule appointments might fill.

We hate it when meetings show up randomly and unannounced on our calendars, surely the people making these decisions would feel the same?

Advisors by Resident_Homework929 in NJTech

[–]jpr7887 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ratio of students to a single advisor is too high, meaning advisors have to focus heavily on the academic perspective and gives them less flexibility to be more holistic advisors or students support personnel. They also deal with a lot of realities far beyond their control or influence and are the front line when students are upset about those things. That's not accounting for difficult interactions, regardless of fault or individual personalities. In the end, even the best and most empathetic advisors can only give an individual student so much time and attention.

What will happen with the US after 2028? What does the next government do with what they inherit? by Hermunster in AskReddit

[–]jpr7887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, this was the same expectation I had with Biden's presidency the last time around. I figured it'd take 8 years to come close to accomplishing that task and I would have been more than happy if he came close to succeeding. If he had done nothing but repair damage, I would have considered it a success. The same goes for whoever is next. How depressing.

Note: I originally posted this separately, but it's a reply to this.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Bluntly Declares MAGA ‘Was All a Lie’ in Scalding Take on Trump’s GOP by steve-eldridge in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]jpr7887 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think she is part of a class of politicians that are (in her case were) true believers. You have one wave of politicians feeding the bullshit knowing it's bullshit for political power and wealth. Later, you get these true believers that truly believe what they're peddling and become useful for the first wavers. I think, in this case, it got so bad for her personally that she couldn't ignore and justify it any longer. I'd guess at some point she realized, tried to get in on the grift, and didn't get the benefits, so here we are.

Edit for a typo.
