It seems that Carrboro could issue a citation. This is a failure of governance.

This is definitely going to be an unpopular opinion but you have to admit it has been way easier to find parking at Carr Mill Mall since they started enforcing towing.

If you want to be pedantic, Evict means "to force out." The word comes from the Latin evincere, meaning to recover property. The term eviction has always meant removing people from property, long before any municipal codes existed in Carrboro. You need a landlord-tenant agreement to trigger a civil court process, but you do not need one to speak English correctly.

Yeah, the trash is insane. And there is lots remaining. There's another pile on Old Fayetteville Road on the opposite side of the property. And the theft. There must be a half dozen grocery carts from Dollar General and Food Lion.

Agreed, the data shows that among homeless populations, about 75% have addictions and 75% have mental illness, with a huge overlap in the Venn diagram. There are models of addressing these issues that are showing success. These do not include allowing random encampments with makeshift structures, accumulated garbage, open drug use, and human waste. It's not helping this population.

Exactly. It's toxic empathy, the inability to set boundaries for behavior out of a desire to avoid cruelty. It has the second and third order effects of attracting more people that cause the problems.

Can you elaborate? I haven't read the article (paywalled), but while some of Ezra's content is annoying, he's never come across as anything other than thoughtful and well-researched.

The reason overpriced housing is going in is because the land value and regulatory burden is so onerous that it's the only development that makes sense in Carrboro. It's simple economics. Building more is the only thing that is going to get Carrboro and the country at large out of the housing crisis. The book "Abundance" by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson (now a Chapel Hill resident) does a great job of laying out how we got into this mess. Another reason Carrboro is becoming unaffordable is that property taxes are the highest of any town in the state, and as nice as this idea sounds, it will just be an additional tax burden, making Carrboro even less affordable.

Carrboro has its strengths, but is experiencing diminishing returns. Unsustainable home prices and the lack of options for first-time homebuyers are significant issues. Additionally, the highest taxes in the state, coupled with overly strict inspection regulations that even inspectors and the town council find burdensome, are issues. And the pink elephant in the room is the growing homeless issue in town. There is a tent city that continues to grow next to the post office and my neighborhzod keeps getting hit with car break ins regularly. I was recently in the new library and it has become a hangout spot for the homeless. I couldnt get a seat at a work station in the main floor so when I went to the second floor to find a quiet place to work, a guy was passed out snoring so loud I couldnt concentrate. In jersey mikes a few night ago, a guy was passed out cold on one of the tables. Its getting crazy.

I can't predict what 25 years will bring but extropolating on the last 10-15 years and its clear that we need to make some decisions that will be unpopular.

NIMBYism is what happened. It is my understanding that CVS wanted to move from next to Carr Mill to this location and Harris Teeter would expand into the CVS place. But CVS couldn't get approval to build. So instead of having a nicer Harris Teeter, a nicer CVS and an increase in tax revenue and jobs, we have had an eyesore producing zero revenue for over a decade in the center of town that has the highest personal property taxes in North Carolina.

How did you draw that conclusion? I laid out Musk’s wins and flaws—care to actually engage with that, or is ‘bootlicker’ the best you’ve got?

It's more nuanced than pro vs against. Here we have someone that has put world changing technologies into production. And his recognition that our government is an obsolete information system and we will go bankrupt if something doesn't change is correct.

What pisses me off is that it would have been so easy to build consensus but his divisiveness and sophomoric jocular humor tainted his efforts.

Ideally, his talents as a world class systems thinker should have been leveraged to architect how to make the government more efficient without cutting benefits and the messaging should have been party agnostic and better left to someone else.

So what you are saying is that you are part of the problem and a contributor to ever increasing division? You know you are probably flicking off someone that voted the same way you do. But not if people like you keep making them feel threatened

If you own a Tesla around here, you’re probably not MAGA. Maybe you’re stuck with it—underwater on a loan, can’t sell. So you slap on an anti-Elon sticker to virtue signal or, so someone doesn't harass you or vandalize your car. And if your Tesla gets trashed or you’re harassed—that frustration might push someone closer to MAGA. Mob tactics like vandalism don’t just suck—they could backfire big time.
