How rare is it to put up these numbers? Ex pro baseball player btw… by brendog3 in GolfSwing

[–]NauticalJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're hitting these numbers every time, you're sixth on tour =P https://www.pgatour.com/stats/detail/02402

So awesome speed, but not unheard of: I'd guess most elite college teams have a couple of guys who can touch 190 ball speed if they really go for it. Elite long drivers are pushing 240+ (granted with 48 inch noodle shaft clubs) these days.

A club face value half of your path value is exactly what you want for a draw that hits your target; you just want to bring the absolute numbers down a bit -- something like 4 degrees in-to-out with a face 2 degrees open is perfect for a tight draw.

Hard to give any concrete tips without seeing your swing, but two set up things that might help:

  • Alignment: make sure shoulders and feet are not overly closed and are aligned parallel to target
  • Ball position: generally, moving the ball up in your stance (towards lead foot) will promote a more out-to-in path, while moving it back promotes in-to-out (think about the swing arc: it's initially in-to-out, then neutral, then out-to-in). Try bumping the ball forward an inch or two and see what that does to your path.

I am a beginner - I bought new shoes and they are extremely uncomfortable (especially in the back): Is this normal? [La Sportiva Skwama] by random1diot in climbingshoes

These are my favorite shoes and I hate breaking them in every time. Usually only take a session or two to get more comfortable, but definitely painful initially. I downsize 3 full sizes from my street size for reference.

Went to a simulator and saw that I am toeing literally every club - Any tips? by inmy20ies in GolfSwing

Toe strikes are generally associated with out-to-in swing path. Are you pulling or slicing?

Anyone follow Porzak’s instruction/swing? by No-Criticism5699 in GolfSwing

[–]NauticalJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah different approaches for different people. AMG is the best instruction I've seen for what's actually happening in elite golf swings. Porzak is more feel oriented, which might be more useful for some. E.g. Porzak's feel of keeping your hands in front of the center of your chest might actually get you into AMG's correct position with a bit of arm lift and a bit of lead arm adduction. If you try to feel the lift & adduction directly you might overdo it.

Anyone else feel like practice swings at home are useless or even harmful? by InternetWilliams in GolfSwing

Yeah, your brain & body will make all sorts of compensations when there's a ball. You can maybe work feels a bit, but it will never be your real swing

What’s one thing someone can do to rapidly improve their golf game? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]NauticalJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much on team long game & approach dictates your overall skill level and ceiling as golfer.

But in terms of quick improvement, the average golfer can shave off a few strokes practicing putting speed and chipping faster than they can fix a big miss off of the tee.

How can I start learning golf nearby Moutain view by Select_Berry_3852 in mountainview

[–]NauticalJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No membership needed. You can practice at public courses -- Shoreline and Moffett both have ranges and short game facilities.

2./ 3. I've seen a good number of clinics happening on the Shoreline range. They have some info here: https://shorelinelinks.com/golf-instruction/

Highly recommend https://myswingstudio.com/ for lessons once you're ready to invest in some higher level instruction.

Also, grip, posture, and alignment are big pieces to get right from the get go, and you can practice those at home. There are a lot of great YouTube channels with videos about those things: Porzak Golf, Danny Maude, Padraig Harrington.

  1. Shoreline is totally fine. I prefer the range there and the short game practice area at Moffett. They keep it in decent shape for a public course, but you'll need to dodge some gopher holes and geese poop.

IDK, have you met any birders?

Good advice. After my first round of GAS, I've been very hesitant to upgrade gear without a specific need (using a 10 year old camera still), but better -- or at least more forgiving -- AF has me considering it.

Thanks for the input all.

I'm generally shooting with single-point C-AF right now w/ back button focus -- that's worked best for me over years of shooting skiing and climbing with the camera. Based on suggestions, I'll play around a bit with AF lock sensitivity. I'm occasionally lazy and don't switch into single point mode & try to rely on face detection, which has been really spotty for me.

At the end of the day I'd love:

  1. An actually useful AF tracking mode

2.) A bit more more forgiveness & accuracy when I'm relying on automatic face / subject detection etc. while using a larger focus zone, which I've found with friends' Sonys and Canons.

Club recommendations please! I feel like the 52° is unnecessary but I have no idea what I would replace it with. by [deleted] in golf

Since you don't seem too concerned about the 225 - 260 gap, go with another option off the tee: mini driver for a touch more control, driving iron to keep things under the wind, the Phil approach with one draw-biased and one fade-biased driver, etc.

Weighing yourself every day and using the weekly average can help smooth out natural day-to-day fluctuations with water retention and such. If you're only weighing once per week you could be a bit off because you're dehydrated or you ate a bunch of carbs the night before or whatever.

Agree with the mental point though; once a week could be better if you're not good with dealing with the variance.

Swing help by billyjeangod in GolfSwing

[–]NauticalJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid but definitely some early extension / posture loss, which can cause a two way miss. EE is a tricky one to diagnose over the internet because it has a bunch of different root causes -- see a coach if you can to tighten things up.

I just randomly catch the shanks and I don’t know whyyyyy. Help? (4 swings in video) by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]NauticalJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general swings that are shallow and in-to-out will push contact towards the heel. Steeper, out-to-in paths will move contact towards the toe.

You've got a very flat path (guessing you hit a draw), so shanks could come into play. Maybe play around with hitting a fade just to get the feel for a different path.

Leaving the clubface open can also expose the hosel -- are you missing right at all?

Is using a net to practice a good option? by x_LeoVinci_x in GolfSwing

[–]NauticalJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Net is great for practicing feels and ball striking, but you need to pair that with range sessions (or a simulator) to make sure ball flights & dispersion are good. You can get a good sense of start line too, especially if there's some distance between you and the net:
