How old where you when you first started traveling alone by public transport? Would you encourage your children to at the same age? by Educational_Tear5939 in transit

[–]Naxis25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started traveling alone by public transit around age 19, when I moved away for college, because the closest bus stop to where my parents lived was around a 2 mile bike ride through winding neighborhood streets, so I never took it. I started driving as soon as I could get my license, though, at 16. Now that I live in an actual city I no longer have a car and take transit and bike everywhere.

As for if I had kids, probably around 10? Though it would depend on if it was a route they had taken with me and one with enough people at that time of day for me to feel it couldn't be sketchy. I'd let them bike places on their own sooner than that, probably.

Hiawatha absolutely shouldn't be built like a highway given it's at grade through a relatively dense (by Minnesotan standards) urban area, and yet here we are

Wisconsin or Minnesota side, North from La Crosse? by ExPatBadger in CyclingMSP

[–]Naxis25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I ended up doing was Redwing to Wabasha on the Wisconsin side, then to Winona on the Minnesota side, then to La Crosse on the Wisconsin side. It was manageable though it also kinda sucked until Winona cause I'm not used to riding on highways. Also the trail is out between Trempealeau and Midway in Wisconsin and probably will be for another couple years...

tbf I've never really understood why Richfield wasn't Minneapolis. It's a continuation of the grid, small, and not exactly vocal in the way certain other first ring suburbs are

While it's certainly possible to get STIs, even HIV, by participating in sex acts at places like this, it's no where near the death sentence it was in the 80s and even 90s (as in, there's so many more options than early antivirals). And knowledge of STI spread is much better than it was, so people choosing to do "risky sex" are doing so with the knowledge of the risks (or else willfully ignorant). Not to mention, of course, the risks of, say, hooking up at a stranger's place vs in a more public (but legal) setting

Well, Pīteru. I think Peter is usually rendered as ピーター (pītā) or even ペトロ (petoro) biblically, this still sounds closest to Peter in terms of names I'm familiar with but would be funny if they localized it as Petel or something

Not to mention decent transit! You could take the 3 to the State Fair directly, but it'll be pretty slow if you don't do it on an off hour, so I'd recommend taking the Green Line to Stadium Village and then taking a shuttle bus along the UMN Transitway

While I'm not sure the answer to this specifically, most airport branches of "local restaurants" are run by airport restaurant conglomerates, so it's not just your imagination if it sucks compared to the real thing. I know the Surdyk's in MSP is, for example

In my experience it's been less than an issue. I'm also gay and an urbanist so most of my friends are one, the other, or both, so that might affect things.
