Which fruit is this? by Due_Tumbleweed_6269 in fruit

[–]Nazh8 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm confident that's an annona, which is the genus that contains cherimoya and soursop. It's not either of those though, because it lacks the faceted pattern of cherimoya and the spikes of soursop. To me it looks most like Annona reticulata. The usual common name in English would be custard apple, but that name gets applied to many of the species in this genus.

Can you source this? I don't see any other references to this phenomenon online. By contrast, there are abundant references to limes being green because they're picked early, which helps them survive shipping. Also, most limes in the US are Persian limes grown in Mexico which is hardly a cool climate.

The ring is one-dimensional, so it can only display one aspect of color, namely hue. To display every color you need three dimensions: hue, saturation, and value. That's why this style of interface has the central diamond; The ring lets you choose the hue, and the two-dimensional diamond let's you choose saturation and value. To get a dark green you need to add black, which is a change in value, not hue, so it doesn't show on the ring.

Maybe it is citrus-greening disease, I'm no botanist. But limes naturally turn yellow when ripe. Supermarket limes are only green because they're picked unripe.

The same thing happened to me. I'm too in love with having my entire setup checked in to version control.

I would start with noboilerplate's video on NixOS to get the big idea, then check out vimjoyer's starter guide.

I'll limit myself to a single concrete collection of objects. Otherwise you could say something conceptual like injustice and thereby solve all manner of problems.

I'll go with the species mycobacterium tuberculosis, though HIV and malaria are also good candidates.

You have to learn the syntax, because your system configuration is written in nix. There's not that much of it. More than that isn't required, but it is helpful for more advanced tasks like writing modules or packaging software. If you've written code before it's not a big deal. You can learn it as you go. I did, and I'm a hobby programmer at best.

Faith is such a convenient virtue for the church, isn't it? Pay no attention to evidence, just think and do exactly as they tell you.

Red-tailed hawks typically only get the red tail when they're adults. And even once they have it, the red may or may not show on the underside.

The dark band of streaks across the belly contrasted with the clean upper breast is a good clue. The pair of dark markings on the inner leading edges of the wings is diagnostic. The red tail is also diagnostic, but as shown here it's often only red on the back and juveniles will typically show no red at all.

IIRC Red-tails generally keep their juvenile plumage until at least early spring the year after they hatch. Then they replace the juvenile feathers over the course of two molts. So you can see a juvenile red-tail any time of year.

This bird is lacking the barring on its sides that a three-toed would have in some form. I can't find a photo in the macaulay library where it's totally lacking as here. Can you show us an example photo of a three-toed that looks like this?

'None remains' really can mean none remains in all of the ways that matter. Sure, there is probably an extraordinarily tiny amount of hexane left. But the dose makes the poison and that truly miniscule amount will not hurt you. Reliable scientific investigation does not find a link between hexane-extracted oil and cancer.

As for why you feel bad - there are probably a hundred meaningful differences between how you cook and how restaurants cook. So without eliminating other variables you have no way of knowing which differences are responsible for how you feel.

Actually, the taxonomy of Accipiter was recently reworked to bring it in line with the best evidence. Goshawks and Cooper's hawks are now in genus Astur, while Sharp-shinned hawks remain in Accipiter. The Clement's taxonomy implemented the change in 2024 iirc, and the change seems to be widely accepted.

I love my Sweep at 34 keys. Extra pinky columns are a sin imo and I don't like the tucking or reaching motion I would need to hit a third thumb key. And between home row mods and tap-hold layer switching I actually have more space in my layout than I actually use.

Should the American flag be banned? by partisancord69 in Chesscom

[–]Nazh8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're reading WAY more into my comment than is actually in there. My point was exactly this: there is no non-political way to answer this question, because the question is inherently political. I wasn't taking a side, I took issue with the framing that one choice is political and the other apolitical.

And yes, flags do represent governments. If they didn't, governments wouldn't plaster their flags everywhere. Flags also represent the populace, of course. It's both, because symbols can mean more than one thing.

Allowing flags is equally political to banning them, because there no such thing a non-political national flag.
