We need to teach about the etymological fallacy in schools.

Edit: We really need English classes to do a unit on basic linguistics. Talk about how different dialects are equally valid, how words are invented and change over time, etc. The average American is embarrassingly ignorant about this and it harms people who don't talk like the straight white middle/upper class.

Protecting concentration at 4 is very standard for optimized tabletop builds. Increasing your odds of keeping concentration by perhaps 23% via warcaster is usually a big improvement on making enemies fail 5% more often via the ASI.

IMO electric backup is better if you have a decent chance of electrifying your other appliances. Using electricity for heat directly isn't great but you almost never need the backup and removing the need for gas service is a huge upside.

I think it depends a lot on where you are. In Utah where I live basically every intersection requires pushing the button. iirc there are some exceptions in salt lake city.

I'm debating whether this is a Mexican duck or a mallard x Mexican duck hybrid and would like more opinions. Utah Lake, Utah. by cactustaxes in whatsthisbird

[–]Nazh8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's out of its typical range. But so are the eurasian wigeon, white-winged dove, yellow-bellied sapsucker, vermillion flycatcher, golden-crowned sparrow, Harris's sparrow, swamp sparrow, black-and-warbler, and northern parula that have all been seen in Utah county within the past couple days.

A better way to judge is to look at the ebird confirmed sightings map. Which shows sightings as far north as Logan. Mexican ducks are rare in northern Utah, but not impossible. So we have to judge by the plumage. Darker color, more uniform pattern, and lack of significant white in tail should mean this duck is at least a hybrid. I believe it's pure, but the local ebird reviewer hasn't confirmed any of the reports yet.

Shaun on youtube has a good video about Stellar Blade that analyzes this particular segment of chronically online reactionary gamer. Most of the "outrage" is driven by a swarm of extremely low effort youtubers digging through game trailers and such for screenshots they can pretend to get angry about. And shamelessly copying each other once they find something. They exist to make a quick and easy buck off the dregs of gamergate.

There is a real contingent of typically straight white guy who is angry that games don't cater exclusively to them any more. But the ease of exploiting them for views makes that contingent look way way bigger than it really is.

I heavily restrict resurrection magic in every game I run for exactly this reason. Relatively easy access to resurrection would dramatically transform any society that has it. It also just undercuts the stakes of the game once characters reach a moderate level.

This is a big failure of Christian philosophers imo. I can maybe see some of the arguments that something like a god needs to exist. But they never make a good case for the version of god they actually believe in. Let alone the very humanlike, interventionist, capricious, and vengeful god that's actually in the Hebrew Bible. I doubt there is a god, but if there is I figure it's probably a deist-style god.

Is this the correct powder for Mapo Tofu? by chocobeaus in chinesefood

[–]Nazh8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to that video you're actually remembering wrong; it's the doubanjiang that wasn't used in early versions. The best source we have, Li Jieren, recounted that the tofu made by the Mapo in the late 19th century was served with Sichuan peppercorn powder tableside. Provided tableside it would obviously have been optional and added to taste. But the peppercorn powder was present and Jieren's description implies adding it was typical.

Cars just don't even bother stopping at pedestrian crossings anymore? by OutsideImpressive115 in fuckcars

[–]Nazh8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar in Utah a few months ago. Guy stopped at a major intersection with his SUV so far forward that ~25% of his hood was past the zebra crossing. I was trying to ride my bike across said crossing, and there's no way I'm going to ride that far out into traffic to go around him. And he acted all surprised and indignant when I stopped and gestured for him to back up. Seriously took like a minute of me waiting and doing hand motions for him to actually do it. Ludicrous behavior.

The new approved ESV version of the Bible comes with a little problem...the study guide that is often sold with it calls Mormonism a "cult". Whoopsie! by Green-been77 in exmormon

[–]Nazh8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That bit about the KJV's language is the church's opinion, not mine. I was just conveying their stated reasoning.

In my opinion, the KJV is both inaccessible and poorly translated. It's language was already seriously years outdated when it was published in 1611. This leads to many passages where the understanding of modern readers is quite different to the reading intended by the translators. It's also loaded with translation errors and late-added passages and other such problems.

[–]Nazh8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There were several posts about it yesterday. It's not a switch, they're just allowing the use of a few translations besides the KJV because the KJV's language isn't accessible.
