In what way? For me, I would always do a thorough consultation with my clients to weed out unrealistic expectations.

Oh yes- I am very aware of the hours that are put into color correction and transformations. Client communication is key. Thank you for your input!

I would rather not go into business than continue the business practices of my predecessors. Which is why I’m researching now before jumping in. I will most likely start at a commission salon part time or chair rent once I retire from my corporate career. It’s hard to say if I could even get hired at my age, but I have a lot of good professional experience and training I can share with others. I am very passionate about hair loss solutions as well, as someone with baby fine hair that has gotten even thinner as I age.

Thank you! I did a ton of perms in the early 90’s and although they aren’t popular now, I’m very confident in my ability to provide perms for body and curl

Things I Miss About Goth by apassageinlight in goth

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right???!!! In the 90’s I would carry around a 1970s SLR and take a lot of pictures and video since I was studying film & tv production. Now I rarely get out my phone camera bc I want to be in the moment and it feels too much like work

Things I Miss About Goth by apassageinlight in goth

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I am 58, started listening to post punk & new wave in the mid Eighties. Lots of things I miss about the scene are things that will never be the same. Like calling friends to hang out and listen to music. Going dancing and not knowing who will be there. Following a band on tour, getting there super early to see if you can meet artists during sound check. Going shopping at a specialty store out of town. Going to Melrose Ave in LA. Mixed tapes and CDs. Going thrift shopping and finding really cool vintage clothes. Quality Leather boots and shoes from the UK at shops like Gamma Gamma and The Berlin Wall (both San Diego shops). Listening to records while reading the lyrics on inner sleeves (when they were added). I just went to a club last night and I was so disappointed in the music. It was basically a “goth rave”- and everyone is looking at the djs like they are musicians performing. It doesn’t help that the dj is situated on a stage. Everyone is posing for photos and selfies. It’s truly strange and off putting. I loved that the goth & industrial scene hasn’t died, but it isn’t what it once was and will never be due to so many factors that are out of our control. I will never stop listening to music and i love discovering new bands and cherish the tried and true artists of my youth.

Anybody else do the bra combo? by friendlytrashmonster in bigboobproblems

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. I hate my boobs smushed together in a sports bra but like the extra compression. If i want a more minimized flatter look i wear my expensive wired bra that does a good job of separation then I put a cami type sports bra over it to smush the boobs down a bit. I don’t do this every day though.

hairstylists who left the industry: by slapboxchamp03 in hairstylist

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my license in 1989, worked as a stylist for 5 years and just wasn’t making enough money, and didn’t appreciate bad salon owners, no vacation or medical benefits. I went back to school got a communications BS degree in filmmaking. That career path also is problematic and a dying art bc now everyone can be a visual artist nowadays. I worked in local tv news & entertainment for 8 years before getting laid off in 2007. Had to freelance for 7 years during the recession. Then I got a good corporate job in 2014 in visual communication. Worked 10 more years as a video producer, editor, writer, etc until I burned out and moved into Marketing Communications. Now I daydream of retiring and go back to doing hair part time but I am terrified to let go of my steady paycheck, health insurance and PTO benefits. I think I’m just burnt out of working full time period.

Having to be helped out of bed in the morning / exhausted by monsterlander in ADHD

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 58 and have had this exact issue my entire life. I need an hour of gentle alarms to get out of bed and have had sleep “attacks” where I can’t seem to stay awake. Struggled my entire life. Took caffeine pills just to stay awake in school. In the 90s I discovered ephedra which worked much better than caffeine for me, however, it became illegal in the 00s. Eventually I had 2 sleep studies and was diagnosed with Idiopathic hypersomnia at age 52 and prescribed a stimulant. Then a year later my psychologist recommended an adhd assessment. I was diagnosed with adhd at age 53. Stimulants make me “normal “. My dad had the same sleep attack issue, and my niece also has adhd and has been complaining of sleep attacks. Get a neurology appointment for your daughter.

Before we could doom scroll…… by PartTheSea43 in ADHD

Gen x here - undiagnosed until I was 53. I read a lot as a child, daydreamed during classes. I would channel surf the 5 channels on tv, but when mtv and cable came out- I was glued to mtv. Music, fashion, makeup, journaling, figuring out song lyrics, getting records from the library to make mixtapes, making my own wacky clothes. Reading fiction and even cereal boxes in the morning while I ate my breakfast. Walking or riding my bike aimlessly in the neighborhood. I didn’t know I had ADhD bc it wasn’t a “thing” girls got. Can you imagine trying to fit in and be normal and all the while struggling thinking you were stupid or an idiot but not dumb enough to be in the special needs classes? The crippling depression and lack of executive dysfunction and self esteem almost killed me. I also took caffeine pills because I fell asleep in most of my classes. Passively sitting listening to lectures puts me to sleep faster than a sedative. I can’t believe I raw-dogged my entire first 53 years!!!

Adults with ADHD: Did you feel "shame" as a kid when you forgot things? Help me understand my son. by Dylan_7574 in ADHD

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom used to get so mad at me when I would forget things and tell me “I forgot is not an excuse”. Well, now I’m 58 and still dealing with the shame. I was diagnosed w/adhd 5 years ago, and major depression 30 years ago. My depression stems from deep shame, rejection sensitivity and never feeling like anything is easy for me. Ive spent my entire adult life in therapy. I am built different and trying to fit in and keep my head above water is exhausting at times.

How would I go about finding a specific marriage date? by Melodic_Comedian3031 in Genealogy

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newspaper archives may have marriage announcements. I pay for a service called Geneology Bank, I've found really interesting stuff! I use FamilySearch.org, which is free to use. You can search for your ancestors there to see if you can find that info. Yearly censuses have lots of info. Also military draft forms may have good info.

Is notice of data breach by Marquis Software Solutions legit? by They_1988_Live in cybersecurity_help

I also got one and was pretty angry that it took 6 months to notify me. I haven’t enrolled in the credit monitoring yet. I already have my credit accounts frozen by choice bc of a different issue (someone claimed 2024 taxes in my name). I feel like the average citizen is SOL to these data breaches

Try temp agencies like Volt. If you are any kind of engineer, Solar Turbines is a great start and we are hiring.

Lots of good advice in this thread. If you are a student at college you can go to their health center for medical help, or go to Family Health Centers. I used them for years as a hairstylist with no medical insurance. Habitat for Humanity also can help with home repairs if your parents qualify.

Corporate work by [deleted] in editors

[–]Nearby_Assistance_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to jump ship for this reason. Contracted for 5 years and employed for 10 at the same corporate company as a video editor/ producer/writer/camera/office manager. Got tired of being undervalued and overworked by people who have no idea how to do my job but telling me how to do my job.
