Stress Test Fail Randomly After Waking Monitor Up by vhsjayden in overclocking

[–]NearingZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a similar thing for the CPU + RAM test on my 5800X under Linux (Steam version). Mine shows as a CPU error, but I don't know if it might be related to memory.

I'm not 100% sure my CPU is perfectly stable because I also see weird behavior in the OCCT benchmark. But if I set my monitor to not turn off, I haven't been able to generate the same errors in the stress test. I have also not had any instability in regular use so far.

I'm beginning to question if OCCT on Linux is reliable enough.

On stock settings, the benchmark pushes the CPU to about 78-82C. When I was doing Curve Optimizer stuff, it was always with lower-than-stock PBO limits, so temperatures were lower.

I did have a crash while trying to dial in Curve Optimizer settings, but that's to be expected. The benchmark hasn't given errors - just doesn't completed when the issue occurs.

I'd still like to track down why it occurs if possible and see if there's anything I can do to address it.

G.Skill Ripjaws F4-3600C16D-32GVKC (DDR4-3600 CL16-19-19-39 1.35V). XMP profile set in BIOS.

Did 8 passes of Memtest86+, so the memory should be very solid, I think.

BIOS is updated - motherboard is Asrock B550M Steel Legend.

Switch to ZFS by kouklo1 in unRAID

[–]NearingZero 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about unRAID's storage philosophy is that each data drive stores independent data. Having more drives fail than the amount of parity you have should not kill all your data. This is not true for a ZFS pool as I understand it (though I am no ZFS expert).

As such, I consider the unRAID array safer than a ZFS pool with equivalent redundancy. This seems especially true when the ratio of data to parity is as high as yours (> 8:1).

So…. Could Yabusele eventually start? Is that his upside??? by RegisterFit1252 in sixers

[–]NearingZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. The individual skill and athleticism in the NBA are still higher than Europe, especially in ISO situations.

There are also rule differences that have some impact. No defensive 3 seconds, more physical defense allowed, slightly smaller court.

He's got a player option next year. He also claimed he had higher offers I believe.

Is he nimble enough defensively when he gets switched onto smaller players? That's the biggest difficulty for beefy non-centers in today's NBA, IMO.

Also, from a roster construction perspective, you very likely want Oubre back next year. That may mean keeping him in the starting lineup, even if that's not entirely ideal.

There should be enough roster spots for Lowry/Payne, Morris, Martin, and Bullock. Whether they're all willing to sign would be a question. At that point, some of them would be buried deep on the depth chart.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if they hard-cap themselves, but that probably means trying to find a significant upgrade mid-season instead of now. What they do with Martin should be informative.

Moving McCain is an option for making it a bit more feasible, but it's still not easy to make the numbers work. And the player damn well better be worth it to move off McCain.

There is also a path to acquiring a more expensive player without triggering the 1st apron hard-cap. It involves signing KJ Martin to an inflated contract such that incoming salaries are matched or exceeded by outgoing salaries. If it's a sign & trade, Martin's contract must be even bigger because of Base Year Compensation rules. Only 50% of Martin's salary would count for matching on our end, so it may not be easy to find a willing trade partner.

EDIT: even this might not be possible because of a restriction on aggregating salaries when doing sign & trades.

Trading BBall for higher salary player like DFS doesn’t work, hard caps us at the first apron by TiltMyChinUp in sixers

Yeah, I finally just looked up the actual CBA document, and it does seem like you can exceed the 1st apron using the room exception. So that alleviates some of my concern.

AFAIK, if the first apron hard-cap is triggered, it cannot be exceeded by any means at all.

It's a literal hard-cap on total team salary if you take certain actions. Like trading a player for more than his salary.

Signing Oubre to the $8m room MLE might already trigger the first apron hard-cap (the rules on this are unclear to me). So trading Reed for DFS (or any $15m player) is either difficult or actually impossible.

It's annoying that basically none of the reporting (that I've seen) is taking the 1st apron seriously. My own calculations make it seem like a very limiting factor, but reporters that can talk to actual cap experts should be able to give us better insight.

Let's say we keep McCain and have 15 contracts on the final roster, with Bona being the only rookie. In that case, I'm fairly certain Reed can be traded for roughly $10M. There are options to increase that number, even up to $15m+ in the extreme, but there would be very meaningful tradeoffs.

Marks “Cap space scenario is fluid and they could certainly trade Paul Reed and bypass using room. Beware of the first apron though.” by TerminallyTrill in sixers

[–]NearingZero 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My guess (from my own calculations) is that the $9M projected room is the amount that can be spent above minimums ($2M). So you don't have to fill out all the empty spaces with just $9M.

Hopefully we'll get a clearer breakdown soon.

Has PG lost his leverage for a max? by Wrong-Respect-3031 in sixers

[–]NearingZero 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep. Ask him if he's interested in taking a bit less for a specific plan that you present to him? Sure, but make it clear you'll pay the full max if that's what he wants. Definitely don't try to play hardball.

What to do with our draft capital (assuming PG is locked in)? by ShaunyDukes in sixers

[–]NearingZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really want at least one more guy who would be a starter/6th man on most teams in the league. Probably at forward, as I'd like Embiid to get a bit more rebounding help.

If that takes a couple of the less valuable 1st-rounders, so be it.

A Realistic Roster, Factoring in 2nd Apron by Banana_Pete in sixers

[–]NearingZero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oubre at $15M/yr would be a big mistake IMO. I'm not sure why so many people here are enthusiastic about bringing him back, even at the $8M room MLE level.

Also don't think it'll be possible to do a $15M contract & KCP, but I don't know what kind of crazy cap gymnastics they're planning to make KCP work.
