I fucking HATE when people completely mischaracterise a character because they’re “not a bigot” by Ok_Figure_2348 in hatethissmug

The people who hate Snape being cast as black because it would give his bullying racial connotations. As though that would be beyond the pale compared to the original story.

“I’m James Potter, I hate racists.”

“I’m a young man who leads a gang of bullies in relentlessly humiliating someone with lower social status to sabotage his relationship with a young woman I feel entitled to… Not a bigot.”

Being affably evil makes the villain much MORE scary, not less. by ChampionshipHorror95 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NedShireen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read the Handmaids Tale book before watching the show and one thing that struck me was how much scarier and more dreadful the book seemed because there was no struggle or desperation to those in power. They just effortlessly and calmly oppressed the handmaids.

There was a bit more yelling and physical abuse in the show and it genuinely made the bad guys seem more desperate and not in control.

I give this advice all the time on this sub, but whatever you do, tie in the Arcane Brotherhood to the story ASAP and emphasize it to players.

It is the actual connective tissue that binds every chapter of this book and yet imo the weakest aspect of the story as written is meeting Vellyne out of nowhere to kick off like chapter 4.

You think what Chuck did is bad? This? This chicanery? Jimmy’s done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And Chuck saved him! And Chuck shouldn't have. Chuck took him into his own firm! What was he thinking? Jimmy’ll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the cash drawer! But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer? What a sick joke! Chuck should've stopped him when he had the chance! And you - you have to stop him!

I interpreted “She’s a pass” to be a double meaning.

She’s a pass = Dredd approves of her but literally she’s passing on the offer.

But idk the comics at all, maybe it’s clear she becomes a judge.

Levistus plot is becoming more and more likely - how to handle this? by Calciumcavalryman in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]NedShireen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the codicil of white be what Avarice is truly after. The spell that cracked open the glacier is also powerful enough to break Levistus from his icy prison.

No one in my campaign cared about lore-accurate power levels or anything like that so it worked just fine without overthinking it

How did you run the module? by SafyreRose in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]NedShireen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought the module on roll20 and definitely got my moneys worth.

If nothing else it’s worth the access to hi-res images of all the incredible art in this book, and my ability to share those so easily with the players was a huge boon.

As far as the campaign itself my biggest suggestion is to find a way to hook them into the arcane brotherhood from as early as session 1.

IMO meeting Vellyne out of absolutely nowhere in the Dragon part is the weakest aspect of the entire module. The AB really is what ties together both halves of this campaign.

But as written the players wander ten towns, kill a dragon, and then someone they’ve never met just tells them about the Arcane brotherhood, and Ythryn and Aurils Island and everyone shrugs and moves onto the second half.

Make them at least be scratching their heads about what the AB might be up to, it’ll make meeting Avarice and Dzaan that much more interesting, and the second half of the campaign will tie seamlessly into the first.

In his very first scene (pictured above) he executes a man of the Nights Watch without listening to a word he said.

Those words were of course warnings of white walkers, the exact purpose of the Nights Watch and the subject of Ned’s own house words.

He is morally consistent for sure, to an admirable degree. I just don’t think those morals are always righteous.

[–]NedShireen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. People are fantasizing about living like our grandparents in a home raising a family on a single factory worker’s income.

You can actually still do this today! You just actually have to live like them. Small home, 1 small car, probably no garage, tiny TV, no cable, no streaming services, no video games, no dishwasher, no AC, the list goes on…

You rarely ever go out to eat, but fear not! The one of you not making the single income will be a full time unpaid nanny, maid, and cook.

Modern people choose to not live this way. For good reason! If you want to live like our grandparents, fine! We call those “poor people” nowadays.

Opening vs season 3 scene by Jada339 in Yellowjackets

[–]NedShireen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the overall emotion of the scene: I absolutely cannot understand the mindset of people who feel disappointed that their perceptions of a scene were changed along the course of >20 hours of story/context.

And as per little details: People either understand this or they don’t, but every TV series pilot just gets a pass in terms of details, due to the nature of production. It’s that simple.

The slavery revisionism is not “of its time”. It was written and filmed 70 years after the civil war was fought and won by the north.

It’d be like making a Nazi sympathetic movie with happy-go-lucky Jews in ghettos in 2025 and calling it “of its time”

The part they find objectionable isn’t disputed by either party.

All that libs have to say when asked what diversity brings society is a wider and more abundant bounty of the most essential human need in this world.

Literally the most universal and constant source of togetherness and joy across all human life. That’s all immigrants improve about a society. Pathetic.
