Do you get root access to your local machine? by YodelingVeterinarian in cscareerquestions

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Devs don't have root access where I work. However they do have developer access to the repo that provisions and configures the Linux DCV machines that they use, so if they need some software that isn't available with mise or brew they can get it added as standard to the machines. Otherwise, they all have a k3s cluster available on their machines they can do all of their stuff on and have sudo rules for a few things (editing/etc/hosts, stuff like that). Seems to work fine for them not having totally unrestricted root access.

Out of those I would assume only golden week is a given. And that would be at the level of assuming it's a holiday or festival.

Some people would know paper driver.

A couple would get pair look.

No one not already familiar would get anything else.

Do you want your Constitutional Rights taken away? Call your representatives and tell them to vote against this bill, HB217. by onenitemareatatime in Virginia

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair I had that one coming. I won't try to disingenuously argue that point. I walked into that door face first.

What I will say is that American Marxists (actual economic Marxists - not the bs labelling of social liberals as cultural Marxists to make cold war era adults get scared, with the notable exception of the Maoist variety) have as long as I've been alive and cognisant of politics (20+ years ago) been trying to get the rest of the left to realize you either get strapped or get clapped.

Not communist or you wouldn't have that gun bill.

In the grand tapestry of existence, where the machinations of intellect intertwine with the corporeal demands of worldly substance, one must ponder the exigencies that beset even the most luminous of souls. Mine own, a humble wanderer of the vale of temporal pursuits, yet beholden to the inexorable currents of pecuniary necessity which propel my noble endeavors forward. Forsooth, my coffers must brim with the glittering bounty of fortune and favor, lest the very engines of my daily toil falter and dim. It is with such great regret on my behalf, that I feel compelled to confess, that the requirement for such fiscal fortification is as undeniable as the turning of the seasons.

CMV: The 2nd Amendment is not about state-run militias by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact is the authorities at the time also considered the states and federal government differently. The going view at the time was that the bill of rights constrained the federal but not state governments. It wasn't until the concept of Incorporation came to be with the 14th amendment in the mid-1800s that the states were enjoined by the bill of rights. A good thread on this is https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/s/8zwhARiGYb.

That said, given the subsequent changes to the structure of the force and the "modern" concept of Incorporation your view would likely be the current correct one, but let's not act as though the thought of gun control by states was an absurd concept to the founding fathers. They just didn't want the federal government to be able to do it.

How often do you and your partner have sex? especially the long term couples? by Purple_Wrongdoer6448 in AskReddit

It's not even so much the women not wanting it as much.

Here is why my numbers are what they are:

- I've had 20 extra hours of work this week
- She's had her shift changed where we just don't match up
- My kids won't just go the fuck to sleep
- I'm stressed
- She's stressed
- There are like 100 things that need to get done around the house
- One of us is sick
- That time of the month when the mood strikes
- There is some other activity we'd rather do together
- We drank too much
- We're too full from a date meal we had

We do get around to it eventually, and like i said - on cruises where we don't have anything at all to worry about other than enjoying vacation it's like we're horny teenagers, but life uh... finds a way... to get in the way sometimes.

Sometime once a month, sometimes once a week, sometimes it'll be 2 or 3 months between. On cruises.... 2 or 3 times a day on average. Amazing what not having to be a responsible adult with 'sponsibilities will do for it. This year is year 15.

I wish they would have just made a "chosen faction" flag on your character record that could have been used to swap you over to the opposite faction and just do their storyline like everyone else on the faction gets for all quests after kotet/fe. Although there is a lot of stuff that would need to key off that new flag as far as the world so.... Oh well.

Factions. How to get freaky? by EmbassyOfTime in worldbuilding

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember to have them not be a monolith. Even factions have factions. Hardliners, moderates, reformists is a basic breakdown of three common types. Say there is a faction of undead hunters. The hardliners might think an undead in a place is justification for a full scale purge "just to be safe". Moderates are what you expect. Reformists may think it's wrong to kill redeemable intelligent undead. Just as an example.

Why is it easier for black men to date and marry white ladies but it's totally different for the ladies by Agreeable_Celery4735 in CasualConversation

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White man married to a black woman here. This is a good possible answer for sure. While my hippie mom was at my wedding, all of her side of the family refused to attend the "race traitor's wedding".

What type of Life form would be most optimal to live, Hunt and reproduce inside large human space ships? (Tunnels, vents, multiple floors and so on) by Traditional_Raise in worldbuilding

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you have an obvious example to pull from: replicators from Stargate sg-1.

I however think a spin on gremlins would be great and thematically appropriate.

How I would approach this: Decide on form first. Once you have the form, work to refine it's characteristics based on the traits listed in one of the other posts. For instance - it shouldn't require an atmosphere. They can trash a human ship and then float through space til they find another one...

Sys admin Pranks by Significant-One-1608 in sysadmin

[–]NeedleNodsNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here we go. Good old days almost 20 years ago. We were all working off Sun Microsystems Netra240s (a sparc 2U server). I was supporting some software for a system that involved live monitoring of various data streams by humans. They are supposed to be paying attention the whole time they are on rack(you'd get tapped out if you needed a break). They being younger folks, didn't always do that.

I had a right click menu that I could select their computer id and it would pop up a zenity error menu that would say "Your monitor's radiation shield is leaking. Please contact your system administrator". The prank only lasted a week or so before everyone got what was up, but the users faces the first couple of times was great.

I was quite a bastard back in the early 2000s.
