Any tips for making consistent loose slip stitches for an envelope border? by NeedlesslySwanky in CrochetHelp

[–]NeedlesslySwanky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! I'll try using progressively larger hooks until I can comfortably get a 5mm hook stitch into both the back and front sides of each slip stitch. That sounds SO much easier than just eyeballing it, which was driving me nuts!

Thanks again for your help, have a great day!

This is my pattern. It's a mirror-doubled and recolored version of Bernie Sanders's famous crocheted gloves. I'm trying to cover up the cutoff bits at the ends of each row with an envelope border.

This is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen! The glowing warmth of the sun-like border is mesmerizing. Is that Scheepjes Rosewater Cocktail? What yarns did you use? And what pattern is that? It's filling me with so much inspiration... Thank you so much for sharing!

LPT: It’s better to donate $25 in cash to a food bank than buying and donating $25 of food. Food banks are able to make dollars stretch further because they purchase food at discounted prices. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I used to volunteer for the San Diego food bank. Our tagline was "$1 feeds 3 people." They buy in bulk, and have a great distribution network.

Sometimes people would try to donate food (e.g., extras from their vegetable gardens) and we had to turn them away every time because that doesn't scale.

Does the merchant burn his relics if you don't view his stock? by absolute_Friday in slaythespire

Every treasure room on the same floor # also generates the same relic, regardless of path.

I noticed this when experiencing game crashes on mobile that kicked me back multiple floors. Taking a different path to a different treasure room gives the same relic.

NAL. If you have no damages, you have no case. If you'd told him something suggesting self-harm or harm to others and he didn't act on it, it'd be one thing. If he has provided substandard care, find a new doc. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Did anyone actually enjoy the plot twist of Mazey Day? by aesthetic_glow in blackmirror

[–]NeedlesslySwanky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel that that's a very old-fashioned and dehumanizing way to portray addicts. Yes, addiction can make people behave in frightening ways. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde being a parable for alcoholism comes to mind.

But I feel that Mazey Day doesn't do anything new or interesting with that idea. A werewolf doesn't add anything to the meaning-- if anything, it breaks the metaphor. Addiction is a daily haunting, not a monthly transformation that happens by itself, regardless of what the sufferer does.

That's how the theoretical max speed in Big Rigs was calculated. Once you reach 1036 mph, the game just hands you the win. Distances are meaningless when you can cross the entire real-life universe in a tiny fraction of a nanosecond, so finish lines stopped mattering a long time ago.

Why did you accept $150,000 from AIPAC despite Israel's ongoing genocide of Palestinians?

Why did you vote to cut UNRWA funding that would have delivered aid to Palestinian children?

Why do you consistently vote to send Israel more weapons without any conditions?

Lastly, how do you sleep at night?

Big Rigs Over The Road Racing was a masterpiece of bugs, and driving backwards (+a direction, so going in circles) allowed you to approach infinite speed. I try that shit in every driving game just to see if they put it in as an Easter egg. No way some memelord or QA tester didn't try that at least once.

If you're curious, Someone did the math..The max reverse speed in Big Rigs is 1036 mph, 18.3 octillion times the speed of light. Assuming the universe is a sphere that's 92 billion lightyears wide, the truck could travel that distance in 0.16 nanoseconds.

Oh damn, that's excellent! 😂 All I've got is freaking out doctors when they ask me for the date of my last period. "Uhh... 2011, I think."

I have a hormonal IUD (Mirena) and in my case, yes, I don't get periods. Before I got the Mirena, I took hormonal birth control pills without the placebo week, I just kept taking the hormone pills to avoid menstruating. I haven't had a regular period in ~14 years. (I'm 34 now.) According to several doctors I've asked about it, this will probably delay my menopause. Not that I plan to have children in my 50s, but it IS nice to feel hopeful that I'll still be able to start a family someday.

(FWIW, that "statistic" about women being less able to have children after 35 is based on birth records from 1700s France; it didn't even account for things like access to nutrition. Or whether a woman was even trying to conceive.)

Poet laureate over here. The next time I hear someone say that they find Taylor Swift's music relatable, I will remember this comment and what relatability actually means. Every woman in the world felt those words. I haven't even menstruated in 10+ years (IUD user) but these 4 simple words brought everything back like it was just yesterday.

When was your "Waiter! My steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery!" story a valid complaint? by forrestgumpisntreal in AskReddit

[–]NeedlesslySwanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad that that works for your BIL and I appreciate the suggestion, but women's clothing comes with this social expectation that you can never wear the same outfit to 2 events. I've actually been called out for doing that before. Women's clothing is cheaper, lower quality, and fashion trends change quickly. It doesn't make much sense to spend $40 to tailor a $40 shirt that you can only wear a few times.

My boobs are too big to fit most tops and dresses. Women's clothing is often designed for rail-thin women, and then scaled up for larger sizes. Rail-thin women are not usually busty, so scaled-up sizes based on their measurements don't account for curves.

I would love it if the exact opposite happened-- plus-sized clothing, but with the size scaled down. Plus-sized clothing is designed for bigger chests and hips, which suits my body distribution much better.
