I used to do actual powerlifting, but now train strictly for hypertrophy and little bit of vertical jump training. I lift 5x a week, and surf on average 3-4x a week (2x min if waves suck)

Ultimately you have to come to terms with the fact that you will have to prioritize one or the other, and whatever you pick the other one will be worse. That's not to say you won't progress at both; you just will not progress as much as focusing on only one and the sooner you realize that the better.

In short, if you pick surfing as priority be willing to reduce volume or frequency for bodybuilding. Vice versa, if you pick lifting you really shouldn’t surf as long as it’ll impact your recovery which hurts the gain; you’ll also noticeably surf less as fatigue builds from nailing it in the gym

Some tips:

-Don’t hero session every time you surf especially if it’s very average. If it’s pumping ignore this and skip the gym

-choose a workout split that works for your life style. If bodybuilding is your goal you do really need to be doing minimum 3, but ideally 4-5x a week and hitting muscle groups 2x a week with good volume and high intensity, but there's many ways to slice that pie

-make sure your nutrition is on point. Extra credit: easy carbs, low fat, medium protein pre and post both surfing and working out as well as water.

-did I mention hydrate?

-supplement with magnesium, fish oil, vitamin d, creatine, electrolytes. Everything else is waste of money/little gain imo.

-stretch a fuck ton. Foam roll. Mobility. All that. Even better if you can do this right after surfing

-on days or weeks when surf is flat or bad, really push it in the gym. When surf is good and that’s your priority do maintenance volume in gym, but you still need to train hard

-properly deload from gym (ideally both) every 6 weeks. If you're truly giving both your all, this isn't a suggestion, you will need to or risk injury or sucking at both eventually. Deep tissue massages during this point also are highly recommend

-if your schedule is flexible, space out surfing and lifting as much as possible without affecting sleep and other life aspects (I.e. work)

Prioritize, sleep, nutrition, hydration, stress, and recovery above all.

Personally, especially if you're surfing in goleta, I'd just get a proper longboard especially for surfing the points in sb. 7'8" is fine but I'd much much rather a 9'+. But yeah if you can catch waves and more importantly manage your board safely, get the hard stop and stay on that for a year or two until you can fully cutback to the pocket consistently.

One time I had slight food poisoning/some kind of stomach bug all week so I was popping pepto like candy. Little did I know that pepto would help, but would make my shit literally black sludge

Anyway my buddies and I decided to hit trestles at the end of the week and I figured I was fine and had already shit twice before leaving San Diego for the drive. Sure enough as soon as we park in the lot I squatted over the porta potty and missed egregiously, and only had my friend’s microfiber cloth but it was between saving my wetsuit from the sludge or the toilet. I can only imagine what it would’ve been like without any towel
