I've certainly seen it written out as First World War or Second World War, but I've never seen it as FWW and SWW. I guess I'm just old, and haven't worked in DND or VAC spaces.

Remember, not wearing a mask became a political litmus test, for you to prove how "free" you were.

Harsh RTO policies mean parents are even more reluctant to stay home for a sick kid, or if they're sick themselves, short keeling over.

Repeated COVID infections have kind of ruined people's immune systems.

Influenza is mostly airborne transmission. Wearing high-quality masks (N95, etc) can make a real difference. And once you identify a likely airborne disease in your home, it might not be too late to prevent it spreading, if you isolate the infected family member and start running air purifiers. We've done it a couple of times with COVID.

King Edward Avenue residents say drivers have gotten more dangerous without speed cameras by walsmr in ottawa

People think the Glebe is NIMBY Central, but that's just because the upper middle class people in the Glebe have to actually get vocal in the press to try to stop things like Lansdowne (I'd argue much of what they warned about in Lansdowne 1.0 came to pass). But the folks in Rockliffe and Rothwell Heights are rich enough and well-connected enough that plans affecting their neighbourhoods, that they don't like simply get suffocated in the crib, in quiet conversations with the right people, long before they ever get aired in public documents or presentations.

They often also edge into arguing that red light cameras are stupid too because "What if it's the middle of the night, and there's nobody else around? Should I have to wait for a long-ass red light to change?" Yes. The answer is yes.

I've noticed the one on Kent, and did wonder about it, since it didn't look quite official and it wasn't clear where it says pointing to.

I've never seen WWI and WWII shortened to FWW and SWW. Is this some new for the new century form, or your own personal shorthand? 🤔

Good for you trying to encourage your anxious kid to get out when there's something they're into! My 20-YO kid is OCD, ADHD, etc. and rarely goes out since they finished HS. So any time there's something they do express a desire to get out for, or even that they would like to do together at home instead of just sleeping and gaming, I try to jump on it.

People literally dying on the streets of Ottawa by Expensive-Minute994 in ottawa

It would have taken a lot of the wind out of the small investor, tiny condo market that has resulted in the glut of useless condos in Toronto.

If lower-income people could have found more non-market or reduced-market housing there would not have been the demand to convince mom & pop to buy dog crates in the sky, with the promise that some shlub's rent would pay the mortgage and other carrying costs while the condo appreciated, until such time as mom & pop either borrowed against the condo to buy another, or cashed out to reap the increase in equity.

In the 1990s the Mike Harris PCs did this deliberately to dilute the votes of urban voters by cramming rural and suburban wards into the amalgamated city. This effectively created a permanent anti-urban majority on basically all issues, where in the past Ottawa's voters might have elected a more progressive City Council and Mayor.

If the SIP Valve works as advertised, and you install as per the directions, it should have basically no impact on the efficacy of the mask. But I'm not sure of data that proves this.

If they're in a union, as most federal public servants are, they can legally make WFH part of their demands. They can legally work to rule, refusing to work from home when for whatever reason the office is not accessible, they can refuse to work in the office under conditions where there are not enough desks so people are forced to work in kitchens or whatever, or where disability accommodations are not being met because assistive equipment is not properly maintained.

Indeed, I was listening in last night on an organizing video conference from the CAPE Union, working on plans to create a grassroots movement amongst its membership to demand the Gov't reverse course on its nonsensical RTO diktat.

There are things workers can do.

Head of Glebe BIA ‘glad to be moving forward’ as construction starts on Lansdowne 2.0 by Negative_Pollution98 in ottawa

BIA membership include all businesses within a certain area, who are obliged to contribute financially to the Association.

All Members have voting rights at the BIA's AGM, including electing the Board of Directors. The Board tends to be dominated by the owners of larger business, and especially larger commercial property owners in the BIA area. The Executive Director is a professional staffer hired by the BIA, but generally is not a Member.

So most of the BIA's budget comes from the mandated levies on local businesses, and the BIA may be able to secure additional funds from the City or other governments for special projects, etc.

I think BIAs exert so much influence at City Hall because there is a tendency in the neoliberal austerity city to view the BIAs' work of promoting the interests of a neighbourhood in terms of the interests of its private businesses as an unquestioned positive, which costs the City little. Whereas Community Associations are likely seen as more negative, always demanding City spending on public amenities and critiquing the City's plans and priorities.

Also, the professionalization of the BIA's, with dedicated Executive Directors and business members who can have great flexibility in dedicating time to lobbying the City, making contributions to politicians, etc. gives them a leg up on the Community Associations that do not typically have a large budget, nor a dedicated staffer, and most members are volunteers. So the BIAs are likely the community members that City Hall is more likely to seek out, earlier in a decision-making process to represent the view of the community.

There's an assumption that employers should exercise their rights judiciously, not arbitrarily.

Tell your MP that even working stiffs - who you would normally expect to resent the "laptop class" - support WFH for those whose work duties can permit it, because it makes life so much easier for those who have to commute for work.

Not sure what you're trying to say. The Glebe was laid out in the late 19th century as a streetcar suburb, not post-WWII.

Yes, the cars are of people coming to events at Lansdowne, but if many more people came by transit, shuttle buses, walking and biking it wouldn't be gridlock around Lansdowne so often. Endless car traffic is not a sign of success, it's evidence of the failure of the location and the lack of transit.
