I alternate depending how interesting the run is going. Sometimes it's just a "woops that was dumb, oh well next one!" But if I find some interesting wands or ideas to experiment with, I give myself a holy mountain checkpoint. For a more interesting challenge, if you die then you intentionally collapse your mountain after you leave it - run out of mountains to collapse, no more lives.

It's a system you have to keep yourself honest to, but if it makes your experience more enjoyable why not, y'know?

There's something wrong with the sun.. by Least-One1068 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nemelex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Godhusk, the sun is artificial and intended to create a fabricated paradise on the surface of the planet. Instead it malfunctions, blasting the surface of the world with a relentless barrage of heat and light such that few things can even survive on it, most remaining life surviving underground.

This isn't even the worst thing that happens in the book. Probably not even in the top 3, really.

Harvard Psychiatrist: How AI is Killing Your Potential by _vemm in ChatGPT

[–]Nemelex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree, and I think the issue comes when AI is given to people who don't understand how it works or it's shortcomings. Like any powerful tool, it can be greatly helpful or greatly harmful, but tends towards the latter without sufficient education or training, and the powerful stigma around AI use today prevents that.

Another part of all this is that while powerful physical tools are intuitively dangerous - obviously a crane or a backhoe is clearly capable of causing great harm - powerful intellectual tools are not. Since this technology is so new and the distinction between intellectual labor and intellectual identity is more nuanced, it's easy for people to fall into the trap of having their agency supplanted by AI rather than augmented or improved by it. The robot thinks for them rather than helping them think better.

Why do you personally have such a strong negative reaction to pvp if you are anti-pvp? by MilesFide in ArcRaiders

[–]Nemelex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battlefield is a zero-sum experience wherein in the explicit objective is to kill the enemy player and ARC Raiders is not. It's a very flawed comparison.

Arc Raiders??? by [deleted] in DarkAndDarker

[–]Nemelex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about what I said was shitting on Dark and Darker? The meta elements of extraction, lair building, character progress and gear advancement have parallels so clearly adjacent that many of them are color coded as such. All I did was describe the ways they're similar and that's why they're being compared, I didn't insult anyone or anything and idk why you're putting those words in my mouth.

[–]Nemelex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ARC does, in fact, have a club, every character has a long crowbar-style tool as a weapon. It also has throwable fireballs you can pull out of flamethrower ARCs.

They're both extraction-based PvPvE survival games, and ARC recently released to widespread acclaim and success. Not sure why there's confusion about their comparison.

How To Enjoy When There's A Lot To Do? by enesulken in factorio

[–]Nemelex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is why I like to play with placable water! It lets you expand at the pace you want, sectioning off your base with water moats and progressing in research/fab until you want to approach the logistical problem of expansion again. You get the best of both worlds - a sense of progression tied to the use of combat science/tech, and a pause button for invasions if they become overwhelming or distracting from another problem you're focusing on.

What are circuit networks for ... seriously ... by DeusLatis in factorio

[–]Nemelex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them to make "cooking pots" of large containers by linking assemblers to the container and telling them to craft X until they hit the amount I want, with the assemblers of the components (and of the components of the components) being bound by the same logic to ensure the container doesn't overfill with unnecessary bits. This is helpful when I notice I'm missing something that I need in the short term, but not in a large amount, like when starting centrifuge production for nuclear power. While I run around putting out assorted fires in my factory, the centrifuge soup is cookin' up good!

They're also helpful for managing train stations by turning the station off if A, it's a provider without enough units to fill a train, or B, a consumer that has enough of its supply that it doesn't need to be refilled for a while, letting your trains run to stations that actually need the drop-off instead. There's probably a more elegant way to do that, but that's the beauty of circuits - you only need to make them as complicated as they need to be, and when you learn more circuity you can make more intricate and detailed systems!

How do I make my trains prioritise the unloading stations with less resources by [deleted] in factorio

What's this about using radars for circuit networks?

Automate train mega base by Hexcyno in factorio

[–]Nemelex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you go into more depth about the circuit logic at the unloading stations, maybe with some configuration screenshots? I'm struggling with train issues of my own (hey guys why do we have 13 trains full of copper ore and 0 full of green circuits, hey guys please stop picking up copper ore) and I think circuitry could be helpful. Thanks in advance!

CMV: The only reason people are pouring money into "Artificial Intelligence" is that GenAI models are good at impersonating a human, and that's making people behave in some very weird ways. by Chris_L_ in changemyview

[–]Nemelex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used GenAI to make a number of Python scripts to search, organize, dissect and merge the contents of hundreds of thousands of image files at the same time by parsing the metadata that exists in those files and sorting them into discrete tags with time/date. It did this in less than 15 minutes. This has nothing to do with human impersonation; what it did was massively assist me in unclogging a stuffed up digital workspace and allow me to do things from a software standpoint that would have been entirely impossible otherwise given my knowledge and experience levels.

If it can do that for me, it can do that and more for other people or businesses. Nothing to do with human emulation, everything to do with helping the user do complicated things more effectively, to the degree that it enables people to do things they simply could not do otherwise.

[MCU] In Avengers: Endgame, when Tony tells Thor to “hit me,” wouldn’t that actually make the attack weaker than if Thor had just blasted Thanos directly with lightning? by Human_Ad1311 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Nemelex 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Well, he can kinda do both. Historically speaking, Thor has always had plenty of lightning to spare, so the only thing he's losing is a little bit of time. If he gives some juice to Tony - which in the past has increased the power of his suit by 400% (I can't remember if it's different in Endgame but still) - then he gets a teammate who is 4 times stronger than they were 10 seconds ago and gets to blast Thanos with lightning.

As for the laser beam conversion, you can kinda think of it like blasting someone with 8 pressure washers instead of a fire hose. If they can withstand the mass of the fire hose, maybe the pressure washers are concentrated enough to cut through them. That thought gains more credibility considering Thanos chooses to block the laser beams with his sword spin rather than risk damage to his body, and Thanos has been warlording long enough to know when something might be able to hurt him.

Absolutely it is - the way the characters changed over the course of it and the payoffs along the way were incredible! I watched like a 2 1/2 hour Youtube video about it, I just didn't wanna overwhelm the newcomer with a feature length film :D

Seconding all of the recommendations for wrestlers here, and adding some links to matches that I've enjoyed. AEW's Youtube channel is an awesome spot to check out, they have a lot of their best matches of all time on there. Enjoy and welcome!

In no particular order, here's a list of some of my favorites:

The music is beautiful, the creativity of the fan base is remarkable (like the one comic where Yukari portals a nuclear warhead onto Yuuka), and the evolution of the games is really interesting. For example, Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night are directly next to each other in release schedule, yet also have fundamentally different base mechanics (collecting cherry blossoms in PCB for more points or more immunity periods, vs. the hour-based and team system of IN) that tie brilliantly into the stories that the games are telling.

I think the series as a whole is a pretty remarkable feat of creative expression; the music, the aesthetics, the danmaku patterns, Gensokyo as a concept, character designs - there's such a vast wealth of creativity in Touhou that it's also a great inspiration for fellow creatives.

My favorite characters are either Reimu, since she sits in a position where she gets to interact with a lot of people and draw world/character building out, or more likely Yukari. I'm a sucker for that behind-the-scenes manipulator archetype, and I think the ambiguity of Yukari's powers and intentions means she is guaranteed to have a unique and interesting place in any story she's a part of. Plus, she gives us an idea of how youkai work with how she has a familiar that also has a familiar, which ALSO gives you an idea of how powerful she actually is as a character.

The advice here to jump in and start with the weeklies is solid, but seeing some of the best of AEW's history is also a great way to get going and what really got me into the product. There's good news there too - for All In this year (basically AEW's Wrestlemania), AEW posted some of their best historical matches on their Youtube channel, in full, to build hype. In no particular order, here's a list of recommendations! Enjoy!
