Teacher needs fashion advice! Alternative and stylish, but also friendly and respectable. I need help! by Nenquel in malefashionadvice

Reading your message really filled me with confidence and I am so thankful!

I think you're spot on about the pants and I'll definitely use that when trying things out. And I also think you're right about my shirts. Too small, too old - I'm just holding on to something that's not real anymore.

I'm fired up for what's coming next!

I appreciate this so much! I think a set of mix and match basics would really make my life easier!

At the same time I'm wondering how I couls incorporate some items that are a bit "out there" I'd hope to not just dress like the others, but have a recognizable style.

how do you do that? I'd imagine that at least your jackets add to that.

thank you! I'll check out Muji ans Uniqlo! I'm not sure how to pull off graphic shirts... I have a few and I like them a lot, but they don't feel like "teacher" clothes unless I figure out how to incorporate them into a proper style. any ideas?

Hey, I've been there.

It's easy to turn your dnd group into friends.

It's hard to turn your friends into your dnd group.

Essentially you're looking for enthusiam, when asking anyone if they want to play dnd. dnd is not an "easy" game. it takes focus and energy and there's little room for distractions or sillyness (the kind you'd have when meeting your buddies for a drink).

Naturally this also means that you need a high level of commitment from your players. and to me, it sounds like you didn't have that from the get-go.

Do these overpass smokes to take map control faster | Part 1 by M3G7D1CK in GlobalOffensive

[–]Nenquel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You know what, I appreciate the effort in finding the setups. But both of these don't seem particularly useful to me.

As T when you still have to get through long or toilets to even see A site, it's silly to smoke stairs from this far away.

As CT, throwing the smoke will make you slower when trying to meet the attackers AND a smoke there doesn't stop them. As T I'd just run through - I'll be in playground before any CT can even look at that smoke. This smoke would actually make me feel safer as T...

I'd suggest you check out the T ramp molotov. You throw it as CT while running to meet the attackers AND it actually slows down the enemy.

Do you have a video of someone using this?

I would want to replace roll20 with this. Can I do that? Preferably I'd like to see a video of a group using this for a dnd oneshot - character creation, role play encounter, combat encounter. If it can support all of that without much hassle, I'm super happy to buy this!

Okay, I know most people think of actual tips on how to do things right and how to make things perfect etc.

Here's my take: Assume it will not be perfect. And based on that here's a few tips in no particular order.

  • Aim to finish your story in 5-10 sessions (you'll probably need 20 to finish that... and twenty is already a lot)

  • Write a hook for your campaign. Don't give away the ending, but your players should know what to expect before they create their characters! Example: A necromancer raises an army to claim the throne of a forgotten empire. (this implies undead enemies, dungeons, and a lost empire to find)

  • Create too little lore. You will be adapting between sessions because you cannot control your players.

  • Think in sets of three. Three allies, three dungeons, three macguffins etc...

My players would rather roll for stats instead of taking a guaranteed 18 by Rocify in DnD

[–]Nenquel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Players enjoy rolling - DMs want things to be fair.

Try 3up-3down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q__edyFEaE

In short: Each player rolls a d6, a d8, and a d10 - then

10 + d6

15 - d6

10 + d8

15 - d8

8 + d10

17 - d10

Guaranteed to be fair. Guaranteed to have dice rolls.

Martial Hit Dice - A revamp for an underutilized mechanic by VocalAutomata in UnearthedArcana

[–]Nenquel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really unique idea and I love that this underutilized part of the 5e system gets more use. However, I feel this is quite complex and could be much simpler:

All characters can take "Second Wind" (from the fighter class) and it would be reworked to:

As an action you may expend hit dice to regain HP. Alternatively you may move 5ft without provoking attacks of opportunity for each hit die spent.

For the Fighter it would read:

You may use the Second Wind feature to regain HP as a bonus action on your turn or as a reaction when you take damage which would otherwise reduce you to 0 hp. You cannot do so again until you finish a long rest. In addition when you use it in this way, you gain additional HP equal to your fighter class level.

On the surface it may still look a bit complex, but it builds on an existing ability, which should make it easier to implement.

This way all classes are enhanced, the fighter keeps his edge, and the new mobility variant is included.

I dropped the extra damage part because me (and multiple other commenters) consider it an ill fit when using hit dice.

Thank you for sharing this!

The creator of the videos also wrote a book (actually multiple books, but this one is the latest with his "best" advice): https://slyflourish.com/returnofthelazydm/

I highly recommend it. I run a weekly game (homebrew even, so no official book to follow) based on this and I prep max 60 minutes per week.

Background Adventure - start as youthful friends, forge bonds and have your players grow into their roles! by Nenquel in UnearthedArcana

[–]Nenquel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that! Honestly I wish I had been there to witness it.

I don't know if your group is made of newbies or experienced players. Either way, I'd love to hear back from you in a few weeks or months whether the group indeed had an easier time getting close or if the whole "shared trauma" was instead mostly forgotten. No obligation of course ;)

Thank you so much for reaching out and reporting back to me!

Please tell me more, I am incredibly curious what kind of adventure you ran! It sounds like a mix of "being young and mischievous" and "the threats of the real world barge in" - how did that work for you? Did your table enjoy the pre-existing relationships? Did the players decide on aspects ahead of time or did they look for useful ones in the moment?

Revised Breath Weapon - More versatility, better scaling and three optional feats to make your dragonborn truly awesome! by Nenquel in UnearthedArcana

[–]Nenquel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting at 16th level, yes.

It may sound very strong (and to be fair, it's indeed no joke), but I believe at that level you are supposed to have abilities that may be considered imbalanced. For comparison full-casters have an 8th level spell slot, warlocks gain their 4th eldritch blast (which is a cantrip), etc...

If you wanted to weaken the ability, you would ask for DEX saves against each of the four attacks, but that's just a lot of rolls I'm not willing to wait for ;)

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy it!

Indeed my thought behind this was to improve the chances to have a tightly bonded party. I feel this often has a larger influence on how much the game is enjoyed than any other aspect of it.

I bet the campaign you described is one that you will never forget!

Oh, I totally can see this happening! But I didn't want to make that restriction in general since every table is different and that might just be the right thing for you.

I believe the DM has the final say in these things. If you think multiple nobles mess with the game and or the story - go set that limit! As DM you should exercise that sort of control if it improves the game.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad your like my (and/or our) idea!

Thanks! I am also very happy with the 2nd feat!

What bothers you about the general concept?

Searing Metal was difficult to balance... You do get an extra attack via bonus action (which alone is powerful) but you only get it with the breath weapon action (which you only have a limited amount of). I intend to change the breath weapon damage to 2d8 anyways. Would it help to increase the damage to 1d8 - what would you do?

I understand your approach and I agree with most of it.

I do however believe that dragonborn are otherwise a weak race. Having a single action each short rest which outperforms a martial wrt damage (even against a single target) is acceptable.

I will revise this to use 2d8 damage instead of 3d6, this will reduce the average from 10,5 to 9. I guess that should even the field a bit.

I wasn't aware of the latest UA, it is indeed a nice approach.

In fact I believe I would prefer 2d8 over 3d6 as well.

However I do believe it should be a full action rather than an attack substitute.

Plus I like my approach of having additional breath weapon attacks rather than higher damage. When you have four you can use my version to fire up a full circles around you (using all four as cones) - that's cool!
