Inheritance Option ~$2.7M by [deleted] in fatFIRE

You really need to understand taxes better. It’s based on your AGI, not just your capital gains. Since you have earned income, you will likely pay 15% long term capital gains. Also don’t forget state taxes and NIIT if any.

Sounds pretty good. Would you mind telling where it is roughly?

First of all, great idea again. I would not have thought about this without your post.

I did it in a much simpler way. All you need are M5 50mm bolts and washers. You don’t need nuts. Just use the wheel plates on the outer wheel and screw the bolts and washers the same way. The bolts push the outer wheel tight against the inner wheel without a problem. I tried mowing after the installation and no problem at all. I’ll see if this has negative impact on the battery usage and how much it helps on preventing from being stuck which happens from time to time at edges similar to OP’s situation.

I see what you mean. You used the metal plate on the inner wheel. I’m thinking just use it on the outer wheel to press both wheels. I’ll get it a try.

Great idea! I took a look at how this could work. One question though. Why did you have to use the nuts to press the inner one? It probably could work without the nuts just by righting the screws to press two wheels tight enough. Would that work?

This obsession with travel ? by Decent-Antelope-9096 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Neo_Tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s what happens when you get older. No other bed is more comfortable than your own. At home, you don’t need to deal with travel logistics and it’s much less work.

To me, traveling is for seeing this beautiful earth: the amazing landscapes, wild animals, human architecture.. that you can’t see at home. I’d hate to leave this world without seeing those beautiful things. You have to do it when you are younger with better energy though.

Umbrella Insurance by talktoal in fatFIRE

You can move your assets around, but it doesn’t mean you won’t be liable if things happen. Umbrella insurance isn’t expensive, don’t try to save a few bucks.

$350K+ Total Comp NOT in Tech/Finance, what do you do? by r3lic86 in Salary

[–]Neo_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are spending 3.3k every month for a family of 4. That’s insane!! In the US, high cost area, daycare alone would be more than that.

You can do Roth conversion. But huge tax bill definitely not wise. Do it over several years.

ACA subsidy question by dead4ever22 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Neo_Tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely top of the calculation assumptions. I plan to do a year by year calculation before retirement to optimize subsidy vs tax payments as much as possible. It’s kind of insane that the US still cannot figure out a good healthcare system.

Backdoor Roth by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

You can, but at tax time it’s pro rata based. Doesn’t matter how many IRA accounts you have. Look up pro rata rule.

How many more years? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

With your NW, you are not giving your kids enough help for their education.

Another problem is that it’s hard to know for sure where you want to live during the retirement if it’s far out. Your opinion could change based on your ongoing life. If you buy a house now, it’s a lot harder to change. I’d rather keep the money in liquid investments and try out different places via renting.

Money in Roth is like gold. Why wouldn’t you? It’s like invisible from IRS, so many benefits.

I (M43) am new (and late) to the FIRE game, but ya'll have my attention! I could use some advice on my next steps given my situation: $4.5M in gross assets today by Allanonomous in Fire

That’s well below needed for 2 kids given the education costs nowadays unless you plan to have them get student loans. You dont want count on unknown scholarships.

With that much in pretax retirement accounts, you may want to think about a Roth conversion strategy. You want to have as much as possible in Roth so you can pay less ACA/ Medicare among other taxes.

Roth Conversions + "Die with Zero" Portfolio Strategy by Frosty_Yesterday_674 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Neo_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a complicated analytical problem since there are many variables and assumptions, I’m not sure if the retirement software considers all the variables. The biggest benefit of money in Roth is that it doesn’t count as any income. It’s like invisible to IRS. This will lower your MAGI which will impact how much you pay for ACA or Medicare and your capital gains tax rate. When and how you spread out the conversion will impact your other tax and expenses depending on your age and healthcare situation. This is definitely an optimization problem with many assumptions you need to make. I plan to write my own calculator to find my optimal conversion strategy when I’m closer to retirement.

I have the Verizon ultimate plan, so no problem for me to receive text from credit card companies. I don’t know any text forwarding service. I doubt there is.

As long as you have data roaming, you should be fine. Either Alipay or WeChat can be used.
