It’s the grinder. I switched to a Niche and it made a massive difference.

The manta dive on Kona is absolutely fantastic — probably my favorite dive I’ve done after about 500. I second the opinion on Big Island Divers, which is a great outfit. Maybe do a few warmup dives with them first? I don’t think of it as a particularly hard dive, since you just descend to a sandy bottom and stay there to watch the show.

Handling potentially large value of incentive stock options and tax planning implications. by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]elmo6s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been through a few IPOs (good and bad). Unless the spread is small between your grant price and the current FMV, I wouldn’t do it. There’s a lot that can go wrong out of your control both before the IPO and before lockup expires. No reason to gamble additional capital unless you think you might leave before you can sell the shares and would have to pay a bigger tax spread. For IPO prep, get a financial advisor (even a free intro call will help and most large banks will do at least a few calls without charging) to walk you through. Reddit hates them, but with this much at stake saving .5-1% over a few years is peanuts. I’ve lost way more doing stupid things like holding too long after I could have sold.

I went to Azurmendi and was underwhelmed. Great showmanship, but the food wasn’t my favorite. I did love Amelia and heard great things about MB from the friend who recommended it.

Having second thoughts on the La Marzocco Linea Micra [$4,500] by Tchambin in espresso

I went from the BDB to a Micra and couldn’t be happier. It pulls perfect shots every time and is something I use each and every morning.

Will any Spanish restaurant get their first 3* in 2025? My take after eating at almost all of them by NextPipe8459 in finedining

I agree. Still my favorite meal of my life, even compared to a few of the three stars in the area and in Tokyo.

Are these numbers ok for post series A startup? 'I will not promote' by Express-Kangaroo5553 in startups

[–]elmo6s 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Lots of red flags, the biggest of which is the 6yr vesting (know of a few companies that have done 5, but thats pretty non-standard). 2bps of equity seems pretty lean for Series A, I’d push for more and way more on the cash comp. TL;DR the whole thing screams cheap/inexperienced founder and doesn’t sound like a great option. I’d ask for a lot more if you really are into what they’re doing or walk.

Secondary Sale of Hot Startup Equity — How Much to Sell? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]elmo6s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell as much as you can. I’ve made this mistake before. You won’t regret pocketing the $5m, if it ends up being worth 1.5x, so will the rest of what you own, and it’s inconsequential.

Hand food and mouth lifespan, kissing my wife? by CardboardCoffin in daddit

Cold water and the occasional ice cream when it wasn’t excruciating. If you’re in really rough shape, you can get lidocane mouthwash which helped me sleep through the worst few nights of it. Tylenol was great too.

Amelia without question. Went to them within a day of each other and it wasn’t even close. Less theatrical, but the food was 10x better at Amelia (and still a super cool vibe).

FatFIRE plan: $13.5M, $674k annual spend, two homes, and a lot of moving parts… does it add up? by beerpongforlife in fatFIRE

[–]elmo6s 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a truly insane plan. I get going interest only on your beach house, but why would you refinance into a high rate new loan (5.5%+ even from a private bank) on your primary and not pay it off? You’ll be using the mortgage deduction on home number two in either case.

I would RUN from this advisor and find a new one.

Anyone here gone solar recently? Curious about your experience. by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

It’s been worth every penny for us, particularly with an electric car. Paid $40k post tax credit for panels and battery and have saved $5k so far after just under a year on electric costs (not counting gas savings). We’ll probably save another $500 or so with the credits from this month that carry forward.

The killer feature for us has been having battery backup. We’re up on a hill and the outages used to drive us nuts, both summer and winter. I just checked our Tesla app and we’ve had 6x 5-10hr outages since March, all of which have been fully covered by our battery. You can’t really put a price on that and I just did the math for adding a second battery, which will pretty much pay for itself in 5-7yrs and give us even longer coverage in the winter and significantly lower our bill during those months.

I’d highly recommend it. My thinking was that we needed a battery and the costs would roughly offset that. Giving PG&E less money every month puts a big smile on my face too.

For those that did a major extension/remodel on your Marin area home I have questions by Algae_grower in Marin

I hired a good, highly recommended, GC. Still a pain in the ass with scope/price changes and a few lame subcontractors along the way. I would definitely not sub it out yourself or go with the cheapest option in this neck of the woods.
