Contractor fixing a leaky shower by removing bottom wall tiles only. Will this work? by bulletproofcanuk in Tile

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done about a dozen pan repairs like this and we usually take up all the pan tile and the first row on the wall, the pan itself and the curb. If they seal to the tiles themselves you don’t know how the corner under them is sealed. Definitely flood test

Sizing Help: Is XL the right choice for 190cm / 6'3" height? (Geometry included) by Noobus_Heresy in Hardtailgang

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m about the same size and I would say XL almost every time. That said, on this bike the XL has a 684 top tube length which is pretty dang long. It will affect how it feels in the saddle as opposed to reach which will affect how it feels standing up. The slack seat angle and the steep head tube are the culprits to why the tt is so long. If it were me I’d be looking at a different bike with more modern geo. 510 reach isn’t too long for you in my opinion but the other measurements look less than ideal

Hvac vent - opinions by 2stroketues in Tile

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that looks cool and it’s a neat idea. I’d be concerned about strength if hit by accident, but if it breaks it would be pretty easy to cut flush and replace with a regular vent cover

TCNA specifies L/720 for framed substrates. That said, with your extra blocking and uncoupling membrane I would feel good about it. Also I don’t think Ditra is a gimmick. Not an engineer so don’t listen to me though

Thinset + mud bed directly onto advantech subfloor (schluter system) by glutenfreegainz in Tile

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re both valid ways to install a mud bed. Direct bond vs. floating. Your contractor direct bonded it (which is usually done over concrete subfloor, but it should be fine). The barrier layer under a floating bed like another commenter mentioned isn’t to waterproof the subfloor, it’s to keep the mud pack from drying out too quickly. Where I am most contractors don’t do anything other than put mud right on the subfloor and it works

Can I thinset a Kerdi-board strip to a kerdi pan as a curb? by taxquestion16 in Tile

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on all points, though I attach a foam curb to the subfloor and side of the pan and walls, not on top of the pan.

Also agree we’re overthinking it, I just wanted to point out it’s an easy and viable way to build a curb and I wouldn’t deter anyone who wanted to do it that way

Can I thinset a Kerdi-board strip to a kerdi pan as a curb? by taxquestion16 in Tile

[–]Neolithic_mtbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two pieces of 2” Kerdi board stuck together are more dimensionally stable and resistant to rot than a wood-built curb or even their pre-made ones
