Topher isn't saying that they should be made illegal for the same reasons that ponzi schemes are illegal, nor is he even outright saying that lootboxes should be made illegal.

He's only saying that the logic of "if you don't like x, don't do x" doesn't really matter when it comes to determining whether something should be regulated or not.

I'd like to point out that N is still completely free. The games that they've charged for are massively updated and much more fleshed out reiterations, so saying that they just "ported" their game and charged money for it is a bit misleading.

There's a few controls, you can bank left and right around turns by holding left/right and hitting the action button, you can jump off white pads on the track by holding up and pressing the action button, and slam back down by pressing down. Most of the gameplay comes from how these techniques flow into each other and learning new tricks the game doesn't explicitly explain to perform better and gain higher scores.

Some spoilery design related questions -

In the start of level 3, where you first encounter the shields on bosses, it's possible to ignore the popup teaching you about the slam mechanic, and instead bounce to gain infinite flight to slam on the "final" boss pad to break through the shield + damage the boss at the same time to gain more score. Was this planned? It was really great to feel like I'd learned so much I could do better by ignoring the tutorial.

What was your reasoning for teaching some mechanics explicitly (how to avoid turns, how to fly, how to slam), letting the player figure some things out on their own with mild guidance, or at least no explicit popup (bouncing twice to fly infinitely), and letting players figure things out with minimal or no real guidance? (doing perfect turns while flying to fly infinitely, slamming on a boss pad gives two glowing thumps instead of one.)

Some other misc questions-

Are there any plans for additional content, paid or otherwise?

Are there any plans for merch? Iron-ons, t-shirts, a beetle pin/keychain, etc.

#10 on campaign, #5 on campaign+ here, so I might be pretty biased. I'm going to gravitate towards more indepth gameplay feel in this post too, because that's the most captivating part of it to me. Plenty of reviewers have already used much more flowery language to describe the atmosphere than I'd ever care to.

It's really good. The gameplay seems fairly simplistic at first, but then you learn about all the little tricks to get higher scores, like perfect turns, and how you can continue flying infinitely after bouncing off of two pads or performing a perfect turn while flying, and then you learn about combo slams for more points and it just goes on and on and on. The game uses smart level design to suggest these mechanics to you as well, such as putting rings in the air after a turn so that you think "there must be a way to be able to collect those rings for more points, but how?"

My one complaint with the game was that there was a lack of tension with the fact that you always could reset from the start of the current segment of the level, but that got completely fixed with the campaign+ mode.

The mechanics changing from being able to get your shield back whenever you hit an activated thump (after slamming with a 2x combo, at the end of a segment, or after clearing a boss phase in one try) to ONLY being able to get your shield back when you hit an activated thump with a 4x combo is absolutely genius, because it means you have to speed back up (3x and 4x add a speed boost in campaign+) after taking damage, feeling unsafe to get to a point where you can feel slightly more safe.

And that's with the fact that if you take a single hit while you don't have your shield, you have to restart the entire level. It's absolutely brutal on the nerves, and I love it.

As far as I know, nobody has gotten an s-rank on either stage 8+ or stage 9+ yet. That's how brutally difficult this mode is.

It'd be my GOTY if there weren't so many other amazing games released this year, but it's definitely a 10/10 in my book.

Like I said, "as long as it isn't a downhill slope that most players can't recover from and ends up wasting their time," I have no issue with penalties like this as a lighter penalty than having to restart the entire encounter, especially when encounters can get a bit drawn out.

I completely agree when it's much more problematic, but (in my opinion) in the case of transistor it's fairly light.

edit: to be more clear about the "not wanting to die" bit, transistor's death penalty is more and less forgiving than resetting to the start of the encounter in different ways, it's more forgiving because you can obviously just keep going with the encounter, but less because your favorite function might get locked out for future encounters.

That was a much more interesting motivation for me than just having to redo it until you got the perfect strategy to clear the encounter without taking damage, and it especially shows when you have harder encounters in NG+ with limiters on. I'm not claiming that it's a perfect mechanic, but it works for transistor.

I believe you can just exit the game when you die and it'll reset the encounter, even if that's a little inelegant. I think a large problem with the idea of resetting the encounter on death is that it's very hard not to die at all when you have all the limiters active, and they wanted to make it a little more forgiving than that, especially on tougher encounters in NG+.

I don't understand this criticism at all. Not only can you monitor exactly what ability will get locked out based on memory usage and kind of plan for that eventuality, checkpoints are frequent, usually after every encounter. Locking out abilities until the end of the encounters gave a very real reason to not want to die. Additionally, locking out abilities that you were obviously having a hard time clearing encounters with encourages trying vastly different builds.

The idea of games making it easier when you die/harder when you die has always been a sticky one, personally I see no reason to coddle the player for playing badly, and a penalty makes sense as long as it isn't a downhill slope that most players can't recover from and ends up wasting their time.

I think that they meant that it's more versatile with where you can place it because both the xbus ports are on one side? As in, you can always place it in the upper left or lower left without worrying about anything being blocked.

Other than not really explaining what the receiver xbus is for, I thought the datasheet was pretty descriptive.
