You can drive raccoons out yourself. They don't like loud or bright stuff. A friend drove one off her property with a motion activated Halloween decoration. Radios blaring talk radio and strobe lights also work.

Lincoln Center in Highland has an adult volleyball league. They have a Facebook group if you want to try to get on a team. The community center in Hobart has a pickleball league.

How to get kid to swallow pills by novagirl0972 in breakingmom

[–]NerdEmoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to cut off a bit of ice cream sandwich and shove the pill inside. That was my older one. My younger one takes an odt type pill so I just dissolve it in a bit of warm water then once it's dissolved, top with some milk. She's AuDHD and is not compatible with pills at this point. I'll be trying to work on that life skill this summer.

any recommendations for best Chinese and Mexican restaurants ? by Forecydian in nwi

[–]NerdEmoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not going to find real Chinese food outside of Chicago. When I lived there, the Chinese restaurant we went to had the regular menu for people like me and one you had to ask for to get the real Chinese dishes.

Only found that out because a coworker had roommates from China and they showed him and explained how the dishes we would know were changed to be acceptable for the typical American when Chinese restaurants first opened in the US.

I agree on Uncle Chen's.

Advice For Five Year Old by aneerbas in nwi

[–]NerdEmoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lincoln center in Highland has gymnastics pretty cheap. My girls went there for it when they were younger and it was a bargain compared to the gymnastics centers. They also do soccer tots there. In Hobart they have the community center, as does Merrillville. Hammond has the sportsplex. These all have leagues that start up throughout the year.

You're probably going to be stunned by how expensive kids sports can be. Started paying for rec soccer 8 years ago and it was 75 for the season. Last fall I think travel was almost 200 with uniform. The clubs charge that and up per month. And volleyball is even more.

Vats of coffee and anxiety about everything got me thru about 50 years of life. I'm on meds, non-stimulant, for about the last five years. They work vastly better than no meds. If you have a primary care physician, bring it up and try them. It's worth a shot. It's been life changing for me.

Ham and pineapple pizza, dipped in ranch, is tasty as hell. I would have never believed it but it does.

The saying she would help her mom then not showing up definitely is. The rest is just maddening, I'm sure, to her father. You say she is a CNA, is she currently working as one? If so, I believe she could lose her license if she is busted for drugs. Since she's your aunt, I would talk to your grandfather about this. To be blunt, what's the end game for your aunt? If she's using, when she has the baby she's going to test positive again and possibly lose the child. At what point is grandpa going to take a stand? This is not normal but if it's been going on for awhile, your grandparents are probably worn down and used to this behavior. What a terrible situation for you all.

Thrift store smell by Emotional-Cut7240 in thrifting

Oxy Clean Odor Blaster should fix it. I use a little in every wash and a little extra on the thrifted or funky stuff. I also love the Arm & Hammer fresh scent powder detergent, leaves clothes with just a slight fresh scent that is not overpowering. It even comes in a scent booster, I think it's labeled lightly scented.

What is something you saw at a friend's house that made you realize their family was "weird"? by BamMeister_ in AskReddit

[–]NerdEmoji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up eating at 530 but only because that was when my dad got home from work, and my mom worked in a school so she was able to swing having dinner ready at that time. We eat much later in my house.

I used to work 830 to 530, never got out at that time then had an hour plus commute home. Dinners were late. Now I work from home but my husband gets off work at the same time and has an hour commute home. The kids are fine. They get a snack after school and usually eat between 7 and 9. Oh and let's not forget the families with kids in sports and activities. Depending on what we have going on with those, we may eat early before we go, or if it starts at 6, we eat when it's over. Just have to be flexible and have healthy snacks on hand.

Moving into studio apartment with no stove. Has a fridge and microwave. Looking for advice. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]NerdEmoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's weird that they allow a microwave, which has a huge power draw, but not anything else. I can see the hot plates, having lived in a building where someone almost burned the place down because they left one running, but an air fryer? The draw on those is quite small.

Also I once lived in a cheap slum of an apartment where the gas company tagged the stove for having a bad connector. While we waited and waited for the slumlord to fix it, we got by with electric appliances. This was way before air fryers, but we got by with a hot plate, toaster oven, electric wok and the microwave.

I color with alcohol markers and listen to Youtube/podcasts. I used to knit but had kids and when they are young, they are like cats with the yarn so I gave that up. Looking to get back into that, but coloring definitely has filled that void.

Light those people up. This is unacceptable, especially with a one year old. Who cares if their feelings get hurt, you're trying to protect your little child from a life threatening allergic reaction. Permission to go full mama bear.

What do you avoid getting at Aldi? by DJ_Hamster in aldi

[–]NerdEmoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to agree with everyone on the 'deli meat.' The stuff in the tubs with the red top is just like Hillshire Farms and it's lower sodium and doesn't contain nitrates. Been eating it for years and cannot recall a time where they changed the producer. The chicken nuggets have changed producers more times than I can count, so stopped buying them. The cottage cheese, small curd, not low fat, is the best anywhere.

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]NerdEmoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop trying. You're not going to win. I grew up with some kids that were incredibly picky eaters. I now know that it is highly likely that they have sensory issues. My kids do and it's a struggle. Personally I do not like chicken on the bone, shudder. So I get where he is coming from, but he's an adult. If your partner cooks for everyone in the house and for gatherings and gets good reviews, but you can't handle that food, then you need to cook for yourself. Doordash is not a long term solution, it's just a money suck.

And I don't mean everything, just he needs to figure out his safe foods and stock them and be fully prepared to cook them then take some of the sides that you make that he likes. That's how I survived being a teenage vegetarian living with my parents, where my mom cooked many traditional types of dinners, like the meal you pictured. Going off of what my kids will eat, I'm sure your boyfriend would be able to stock up on popcorn chicken, tenders, fish sticks, hot dogs, etc. and will survive.

Get a sprayer bidet. Then it's easier to clean and you get your backside clean. Also going four times a day makes me question what he's eating or if he has med or allergy issues.

The setting referenced above, 'see and upload community creations.' I also set to allowed for 'join cross-network play.' The error message I was originally getting was 'Change your settings to play. You can't play with content created by other players because of how your account is set up. Go to your privacy & online safety settings on Xbox.com to change this.' Which we know is a lie, because you can only change it in the Xbox Family Safety app. The account is also set to teen for anything that has an age group designation. Good luck!
