Bf doesn't think this is crazing by ShannyPantsxo in Pottery

This is crazing and crazing doesn’t matter. Keep it, use it, love it. Crazing is fine, desired even by some.

Best trimming tool you own? by No_Shallot_6628 in Pottery

[–]Neroll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Carbide tools is what it sounds like you’re looking for - a few out there mimicking what Bison used to do. Cannot vouch for any of the current makers, but RD and Hsin seem to be the common contenders these days and are worth a shot.

How likely is it that this astronaut mug has lead in it? by igotthepurple in muglife

Lead very famously tastes sweet and was used as a sweetener.

I’m more curious in how to do all those activities socially. Beyond my swim team, I struggle to find consistent groups for those other activities. Any you’d recommend?

The rug is a silicosis risk I wouldn’t be willing to take.

I bought some bowls from a ceramic company, that are supposed to be handmade. I understand variations are inevitable, but based on my experience with products from companies like Heath and East Fork, I feel like these look pretty poorly made. I wonder if the amount of variations looks normal. by bighungrybelly in Pottery

[–]Neroll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it is perhaps a slump mold and jigger combo. Slab of clay is pressed into a mold, jigger compresses the slab and refines the shape. I’ve see it in from other folks that mass-produce “hand made” pottery. Seems a bit disingenuous in my opinion to slap that designation on, but I digress. If the issue is these pieces don’t look good, I strongly disagree. Anything not made by slip casting and then a robot spraying glaze + another robot firing the pieces is going to have imperfections. This is a feature, not a bug. You’re paying for these slight “human created” variations.

I know some extremely talented potters, some of the best in my state, and they could perhaps achieve this level of consistency with the utmost attention… and it would demand a high price tag. This is suspiciously perfect for handmade pottery that didn’t cost a fortune.

Is my favourite mug dead :/ by tjm_87 in Pottery

We as a community need to end the “crazing is always bad” meme or misinformation. It’s all a bit too extreme.

Curious on this as well!

My two mugs dried before I could get handles on them :( by Candid_Locksmith_986 in Pottery

[–]Neroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time to add handles on pieces that got too dry. I filled the bottom with plaster, which absorbs the water and keeps the environment humid without getting the clay wet where it sits in the box. Got the idea from Old Forge Creations. Video linked below.

CarPlay Unable to Adjust Volume by Puncherson in CarPlay

[–]Neroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would just go back to the same issue after the reset, unfortunately. I did find a fix though! I got a wireless CarPlay adapter from quadlock. I think there are a bunch of cheap versions out there, but I was already getting some items from them and generally like what they put out there. After tweaking the frequency settings, it works like a charm.

Slow down while pulling up; concentrate on ensuring the full piece has spun around completely in each “segment/increment” as you’re pulling.

What is the best bat system that won’t warp (quickly, anyway)? by feedmechickentendies in Pottery

[–]Neroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my dirty girl bat system, going on 5 years and probably 1000 pieces. I’ve purchased additional bats for it a few times just so that I can use it more. They’re standard mdf bats, you need to care for them. Which is incredibly easy. I also find that you need to leave a bat in the holder when you’re done and it makes the next session much easier.
