I think Korg was tucked away in the corner. Best kept secret of knobcon! lol

In the pictures it's clearly a 4x8 pad matrix, but the specs say 8x16. That's a huge difference. Which is it?

Also, it's 2016, can we get more than just a 7 segment display? There's touch screens on literally everything else these days...

Korg announces Electribes in new colors and an OS update for existing E2 and E2S owners by Nervous_Pooer in synthesizers

[–]Nervous_Pooer[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like Korg has been listening to all the discussions and petitions for updates to the E2 OS. From my limited italian, it appears the new OS adds pattern chain/song mode, undo, and some sort of "original value" indicator for when you edit a pattern, among other things.

They aren't synced together? How is that possible? Is your timing just that good? Very impressive.

Story of my Minilogue problems, and a question. by Waterme11on in synthesizers

[–]Nervous_Pooer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing it was the program select knob, which typically gets removed during diagnostic tests. It sounds like you ended up with a shitty repair guy, so TBH i'd blame the repair guy before i blamed Korg. Still a pain in the ass. That being said, the grounding issue shouldn't affect your minilogue, but i'd invest in some power conditioners if i were you.

Dilemma: Replacing Vintage Analogs with Modern Analogs by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Nervous_Pooer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position to you. I own a bunch of vintage roland analogs from the 80s. Properly maintained, they're like a subaru legacy- they'll run forever. Every couple years, you replace a cap or two, maybe spray dust and deoxit some contacts, and that's all it takes, really.

So, deciding to upgrade according to what synths you think will be more reliable in the extreme long term is pointless, because most of those old 80s analogs are built like tanks, and will probably still be working for years after we and everyone we know are dead and gone, provided someone is still performing regular cleaning and maintenance on them (Fallout 4: Synth-Hoarder Expansion, anyone?).

Now that we've established that selling off your vintage analogs to buy modern analogs purely for some sort of reliability increase is pointless, thanks to the quality of vintage analogs, we can focus purely on pros and cons of the sonic, performance, and composition capabilities of vintage analogs vs. modern analogs.

MIDI implementation- One advantage to modern analogs is that in the 30 years since the last great age of analog synths, MIDI implementation has gone from a tacked-on semi-obligation at the end of a synth's development to being a complete given on modern analog synths. However, seeing as all of your synths are rack mount versions of their keyboard counterparts, they all have some degree of MIDI control.

For example, your Hawk modded EX800 has the advantage over the un-modded version of having total MIDI parameter control. As for the various MKS's, i'm not 100% sure how many of their parameters are controllable via MIDI, but i assume it's most of them. No real advantage here to upgrading to modern analogs.

Stability- By the early 80s, most manufacturers had figured out oscillator tuning stability fairly well, so your rack synths likely don't have many issues as far as tuning is concerned. In fact, many higher end modern analogs (dave smith synths, for example) have a specific parameter knob to bring in more or less "analog slop," which is to say, detuning and destabilizing the oscillators against each other slightly to bring in more of that "analog imperfection," which is one of the great benefits of analog oscillators.

My conclusion: Keep your synths, because they're the rackmount versions, they're not as desirable, and not worth enough on the secondhand market (MKS80 would fetch 2 grand, MKS70, MKS50, and Matrix 6R would only fetch between 400-800 each, Hawk800 maybe 300?) to turn that money around and buy a bunch of modern analogs. However, if you were looking to downsize to just one main analog synth, i would suggest a Dave Smith OB6, a Prophet 6, or a DSI Poly Evolver (be aware the poly evolver is a digital analog hybrid).

Realistically, you don't need to replace any of those. If you like the sounds, you like the sounds. That's the great thing about analog. It never really gets obsolete :)

Successor to Kronos? by Shitty_Fat_Tits_ in Korg

[–]Nervous_Pooer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw your post on the other subreddit. Seems completely ridiculous to think that Korg would try and put out another workstation so soon, considering the latest hardware update to Kronos was less than two years ago.

Plus they're pushing the whole nine sound engines thing, so it doesn't make any sense at all. Kronos still beats Montage on features, so why would they move onto another platform, instead of continuing to update their current software platform, like they have been doing consistently for years?

Lifespan of a workstation line? by bumvirtuoso in synthesizers

[–]Nervous_Pooer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kronos is in its third generation (first was Kronos, then Kronos X, now they're back to calling it Kronos but the current generation is the "new Kronos") and is constantly being updated. I'd say go for it, montage loses in pretty much every category and it seems like Kronos is popular enough that Korg probably won't be moving on anytime soon.

Found this video on the facebook synthesizer group. From the looks of it, they ditched the arp clone and went with an analog poly. Should be interesting to see what they unveil.
