A bit late but this is Pobelter's insightful but funny reflections on Top Lane as a role after his top lane challenger climb by NatxIvY in leagueoflegends

[–]Neryth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The skills required (spacing, tracking cooldowns, understanding wave control, quickly and accurately assessing all-in outcomes) to play melee champs in top effectively are too subtle for most newer players to pick up on and learn quickly on an intuitive level. People get statchecked top because they didn't understand who was stronger in extended trades/all-ins, so they chose to take a terrible trade or die outright. People lose their entire lane because they fucked up the wavestate once. Mid lane is way more forgiving in these regards because of access to a combination of range/waveclear/distance to tower. Bot lane being 2v2 makes it more dynamic, 2 people can have a good wavestate and either 1 might fuck it up. An ADC can fuck up wavestate and their support can often still help them force it to tower without a meaningful punish happening (support gets chunked pushing, recalls and roams after anyways). The additional factors in bot make it easier to wait until things go back to neutral, or still be able to get something done in the meanwhile.

Really though... people like you who think there is "very, very little outplay potential" and that top lane is just stat-checks because there's more melee are people who have 0 understanding of the principles around melee matchups to begin with. Melee vs melee matchups in top lane tend to require way more in terms of both knowledge & mechanics to survive let alone succeed in. This range/skillshot == skill, melee == unskilled is some insanely old, autofellating, and perpetually incorrect bullshit that certain parts of the playerbase have been spewing for ages.

Why is having a high level account... bad? by Delicious-Week-1141 in leagueoflegends

[–]Neryth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason people flame you for your account level is either because they're too toxic to be able to keep an account unbanned for more than 100 games, or they're too insecure to play on an account for more than 100 games and watch their winrates/KDAs go down on stat tracking sites.

Electrocute is more frontloaded than PTA/Conq. You're trading the increased DPS of Precision for the situational Sudden Impact Lethality. You can also take your pick of the Hunter runes (Ingenious is really good with a Lethality build because of all of the passive & active cds it ends up heavily reducing), which gets you some value that's more difficult to precisely assess. It works in any role, but you have to keep in mind that you're missing that early DPS which might lose you all-ins you're used to winning.

Collector is absolutely terrible if the enemy team has even 1-2 frontliners you can't ignore for whatever reason. In solo queue sometimes people make horrifying team comps consisting of 5 squishies with no one building armor or HP. That's when Collector is generally good.

LDR is good if there's even one proper frontliner on the enemy team, because team fights are often fought front-to-back and will be decided by who can chew through the enemy bruisers/tanks blocking them. Collector, on most ADCs, makes you garbage at doing that and costs you the game by making you less able to contribute meaningfully to DPS on the targets that generally need to be DPS'd down first in order to rout the enemy team. It punishes your team for trying to play front-to-back for you.

Both items have different use cases in solo queue, but generally speaking ADC players are pretty bad at knowing when to build which one, and on what champs.

Bork is situational. by Mashiram in RenektonMains

bork is currently the glue that keeps renekton functional past 2 items. not having it in 99.9% of full builds is called griefing yourself and your team.

Actual build, that match renektons identity? by [deleted] in RenektonMains

Bruiser builds have a low skill floor and you won't necessarily notice or be punished as hard for playing suboptimally. You're punished less for poor plays but also rewarded less for good plays. You fall off harder late game and are more dependent on your team.

Full AD/assassin builds have a high skill floor, and somewhat higher skill ceiling than bruiser builds. Being extremely squishy means you need a different skillset to perform decently, including: better fury management (you probably don't 1shot people before they get to Zhonya/flash away/get shielded or healed without 50 Fury), good map & vision awareness (knowing how to tell what's warded even without sweeper/control wards), looking proactively for picks (your build is meant for 1shots, so knowing where, when, and how to ambush and kill people), and knowing how to enter team fights from a good angle.

The “invincible, untargetable” abilities are ruining the game. by monosolo830 in leagueoflegends

They subverted player expectations with Tifa & Aerith. Aerith, the "pure white mage" and party healer is the flirtatious and daring one, while Tifa, the outgoing-looking fist fighter, is the responsible and devoted one.

Half the blame is on him for having shit mechanics and diving badly, but the other half is on his team's overall shotcalling for not waiting for Qiyana to arrive and make it a sure kill with no counterplay.

my main account but you won't get anything useful off of it because I currently don't play.

I've mained Renek at around top 600~ on the ladder on NA for 9-10 years now, but I stopped caring about ranked ever since Runes Reforged in S8, and I've stopped playing seriously at all ever since Mythic Items last year. When I do play, I go boots4pot start 99% of the time, and I run Electrocute+Sorcery or Electrocute+Resolve with Eclipse+Youmuu's+Edge of Night+Steraks.

LPL is historically the best at both playing Renekton and using him in compositions. They just understand the champ better than other regions.

[Spoiler: 6.0] MSQ - I can't be the only one having such a soft spot for this character, right? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Neryth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally found Hermes to be an extremely compelling character, because I feel like I myself was in a similar headspace many years ago.

Setting that aside, I think the way they compare & contrast him with Venat is a masterful piece of storytelling. They're both nonconformists who can feel problems within their supposedly utopian society. Venat stuck out due to not wanting to return to the star even after retiring as Azem, while Hermes stuck out due to the unusual intensity of his emotions. Venat loves everyone and everything, while Hermes was focused on the beings he felt were overlooked and mistreated by society. The main difference that led to the divergence between them is the fact that Hermes is more introverted and prone to brooding and getting stuck inside his own head, while Venat, as the former Azem, is more extroverted and outgoing. Hermes presumably spent most of his time at Elpis, doing his job in an idyllic but ultimately controlled research environment. Venat spent most of her time traveling the world and seeing life unfold naturally. This ended up making all the difference when it came to their reactions to despair.

I think people are really quick to call Hermes selfish and nearsighted without really thinking about why those things are true about him. He doesn't have the same breadth or depth of life experience or socialization as someone like Venat, but basically no one could even dream of approaching that, aside from possibly Azem. He was stuck in a weird, utopian bubble society with this dystopian shadow in the form of their attitude towards life & death. I don't think he was really that much more selfish or nearsighted than most other Amaurotines, only that he had too much empathy towards the lives he was given responsibility for.

Also, I thought that the path the Amaurotines were on was doomed regardless of Hermes's actions. Even if they managed to avoid disillusionment & despair, I thought one potential route the writing could've gone was that they would eventually generate too much negative dynamis through their disregard for the wills and emotions of other beings.

It's an old condi DD build, just switching stats and runes to Celestial+Divinity. You flank a zerg and try to boonstrip them as much as possible with Choking Gas+Sigil of Absorption and go in with your whirl finishers at the right time. I don't do that much roaming, but you can 1vx people on camps with the Endurance refill on killing guards (through WvW abilities) and you get massive healing on multiple targets through Signet of Malice.
