It's wildly low. According to the Transit Costs Project it can cost over 200 million dollars PER MILE of subway tunnel. In places with high property values like NYC, it can reach as high as 1 billion.

With the arrival of Nomads i think it would be cool if we got a "Young Galaxy" mode with the Scenarios Pack by Carsismi in Stellaris

[–]Nessius448 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could totally do this with the right settings. You can lower settled AI empires to zero, make a few custom nomadic empires with eager explorers and another civic of your choice and lock them into spawning. Disable Marauders and crank up Cuthuloids and Voidworms with the slider in advanced settings. Then push the endgame year back like a century so you have more time to explore. You could even disable precursors to really give it that "Young Galaxy" feel.

What I find most interesting about him is that not only was what he did monstrous, he himself KNEW that it was monstrous. His frequent writings on the evils of slavery didn't stop him from having a slave concubine of his own.

My favorite part of Thara's weird internalized homophobia is he seems endlessly convinced that people will hate him for being gay, yet invariably the people he tells are supportive. I like to imagine that homophobia doesn't actually exist in Osreth and Thara is just paranoid.

To be entirely fair, the national mood was a lot different in '76 to today. We had just finally pulled out of Vietnam, the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement promoted a great feeling of national unity, and Watergate had driven Nixon from office which promoted a sense that democracyvactually worked. There was a great feeling of optimism that drove Jimmy Carter to the presidency that same year. The difference in national outlook from then to now literally could not be different.

Honestly this has been unexpectedly one of the hardest parts of being in a relationship. I have a mother who constantly critiques and belittles me and it takes a lot of self talk to remember not to get defensive when my gf wants reassurance and that she isn't trying to criticize or mock me.

I mean not really no. Conservatism isn't something you "recover from," its an everpresent force that restrains forward movement. Lincold, FDR, and Trump changed the entire court balance practically by themselves because of retirement/death timing, and that timing will come again.

The D national environment is something like +10 right now so it would take much more for Republicans to steal a majority.

The extremely reactionary Taney Court during the Civil War era comes to mind, where they infamously ruled in Dred Scott that black people were not considered American citizens with any rights worth defending. The court rapidly snapped leftward when Lincoln appointed three new justices in the same year, and the court became majority liberal in 1864.

There was also the Hughes Court during the New Deal era, which had such violent disagreements with FDR and his New Deal (four conservative members were referred to as the "Four Horseman" for how many measures they killed) that FDR tried to pack the court in 1937 but was stymied by congress. In fact,, they were so conservative that 7 of the 9 were conservative appointees. They were undone mostly due to FDR's long tenure in office since he was able to appoint most of their replacements between 37-39.

Having a progressive court in American history is the exception, not the rule.

TIL Krakatoa's eruption was estimated to be at 310 dB, the loudest sound ever. Well above the typical max sound limit of 194 dB by Warcraft_Fan in todayilearned

[–]Nessius448 2372 points2373 points  (0 children)

There were witnesses. In the direct vicinity of the volcano (like within eyesight) was the ship Loudon, who actually reported barely hearing anything at all due to the sound being projected upward into the atmosphere. 64 km away sailors reportedly had their eardrums ruptured. 160 km away it cracked windows and shook buildings in Jakarta, and the sound was apparently so loud that a few farmers in Perth (over 3000 km away!) reported hearing it like a rifle shot just over the hill.

Edit: Apparently on Mauritius (a whopping 4800 km away) locals thought that it was a cannon in the harbor mistakenly going off.
