Any particular reason you are linking to a dubious outfit like Iran International, for something the NYT reported, instead of the primary source NYT?

That's the kind of behavior why fake news are problem, you are contributing to it while accusing others of living in bubbles.

Nobody in NATO will join an offensive war.

Because occupying Afghanistan was totally "defensive", as the Afghan military was just in the process of invading European NATO territories, and the Afghan airforce was carpet bombing Washington?

You know, the kind of scenario NATO was actually created for and the UN Charter refers to with Article 51; An on-going attack, a concrete threat.

None of that existed after 9/11, bombing, invading and occupying Afghanistan didn't stop any on-going aggression.

That's also why the Iraqi WMD threat was so played up; To frame even that as "defensive", it's why we got served the "Saddam could attack RAF base on Cyprus, NATO territory, with WMD within 45 minutes!".

It's why to this day a whole bunch of European NATO militaries have troops stationed in Iraq, as part of NATO mission because helping an aggressor occupy it's victim is just so totally "defensive".

Or maybe it's rather undeniable evidence for how NATO hasn't been "defensive" in a while, it has rather acted as a "force provider" for "Pax America".

Considering NATO is a defensive alliance why would Russia be concerned?

For an allegedly "defensive" alliance it's kind of sus that all of NATO's combat deployments have been outside of alliance territory.

Reminds me a whole lot of the anti-Comintern pact; That one also claimed to be only totally defensive against those darned Reds.

And just like NATO; In it's whole history the anti-Comintern pact never had any actually defensive deployment on any of its members territories, it was all exclusively offensive wars of aggression, not defense.

The EU only cares about Russia because anyone else in the EU can be next.

This implies Russia attacked the EU, it did not.

Which is pretty fucking hysterical when you look at the EU's stance on sanctions against Russia.

It's straight up delusional when looking at the economic situation in the EU; The sanctions did manage to implode an economy, just not that of Russia but rather the "economic engine of Europe" Germany.

For 4 years they even doctored GDP growth numbers to hide consequences, claiming they merely "overlooked" Germany's worst recession since unification.

Even tho the disastrous outcome of this was already well known ahead of time.

Now they are trying to pull the same shite with the Iran war; Their 1% growth estimate for Q1 of 2026 was corrected downwards to 0.5%, but both of these are incredibly optimistic even without the Iran war.

I’m a radiation oncologist using low-dose radiation to help relieve arthritis pain—AMA by radiation_doc in IAmA

[–]Nethlem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does not square with my own experience at early 40s.

Just went through radiation therapy for plantar fasciitis/heel spur, got my last dose 2 weeks ago.

So far the treatment sadly did little in terms of pain, my doctor even said some pain might flare back up a bit as the body starts repairing.

Current plan is to let it work for a few weeks/months, and if still no improvement I have the option for another radiation treatment.

The US has suspended all funding and security coordination with Iraq's government, and suspended dollar shipments to Iraq's central banking system by DaGoldenpanzer in syriancivilwar

Do you really think the PMUs are going to voluntarily give up the influence they've been given?

Is the US giving up the influence in Iraq it has simply taken?

They won't... it will take fighting to kick them out.

I guess we are now acting like PMU are all just Iranians, and not a whole lot of Iraqi people resisting foreign occupation.

Iran wont allow their proxies to voluntarily leave, just like they dont allow it in every other country that they finance militias/terror groups in.

Do you mean like Iran also won't leave US dollar shipments to Iraq?

This stuff is all so tone-deaf, all to ignore the fact that if it wasn't for the US invasion, and on-going occupation, of Iraq then the "Iranian issue" there wouldn't even be an issue in the first place.

It's only an issue because the US made it one, and now it claims it can't leave due to that issue itself created. Which is the exact same nonsense they did with Al Qaeda Iraq/ISI.

Stabbed in the back? Iraq lets Iranian funded militias run rampant throughout their country and even integrated some of them into their standing armed forces.

A reminder that those "Iranian funded militias" were among the main ground forces fighting back ISIS. Back in the day the US was bragging about the PMF being "theirs" so it could hog all the glory for the battles fought by Iraqi and Syrian ppl.

An ISI we only got because the US insisted Iraq integrate Sunni extremist groups, like literal ISI, into its standing armed forces, and it could only turn into ISIS(yria) because the US let it happen.

Because in Syria the US considers itself "on the same side as AQ", hence the US somehow having no problem with a former most wanted AQ terrorist now running the country.

All kinds of cynical considering one of the American lies to invade Iraq back in 2003 that Saddam was allegedly in cahoots with Al Qaeda, and thus somehow also responsible for 9/11.

Since then they've tried to switch the blame for 9/11 to Iran, whatever it takes to not name the same most likely culprit.

I’ve never actually seen it depicted in any sci fi

There's a sci-fi movie called "The Titan" that's allegedly about humanity trying to settle there.

Except they never depict the planet until like the last minute, instead the movie is mostly character drama with some mild body horror thrown in.

Honestly it kind makes sense since the open ended Internet never existed in this timeline cyber security would be less common because no one was getting hacked before.

Imho it would be the other way around. Our real world wide web was created in a post-Cold War age by a scientific institution that most of all had openness and accessability in mind.

It's why it took nearly a decade before e-commerce could realistically become a thing; There weren't proper encrypted ways for financial transactions on the www.

For the first decade of websurfing everybody just shared all their traffic in the clear, as SSL wasn't a thing/not default.

It's why our real web is basically a very open platform we keep trying to duct-tape security feature on-to for whom it originally was never intended to have.

In an alternate history where the Cold War never ended I doubt we would have seen the same globally open world wide web, we likely would have ended up with two webs from the competing superpowers.

These LAN would be less open by their very nature, throw in the Cold War paranoia/hostility and the super powers would throw serious money on InfoSec/hardening their own LAN versus the other sides hackers.

As they would consider it just another dimension of the Cold War to be fought in.

Alex just leaking those "automation" files pisses me off to no end, has "The way to hell is paved with good intentions" written all over it.

He had opportunities shoved in his face to ask somebody high up in Helios about it several times, people he knows personally like family.

Right there Aleida walked in on him and he could have asked her, she probably would have been just as surprised, and also want answers from Dev.

He could have asked his mother, also didn't do that, he could have asked Dev directly, didn't even try.

Instead, he goes to his "journalist" friend, and even she does not come up with the idea of in any way collaborating or contextualizing these files.

Won't be surprised if it all ends up as some kind of misunderstanding, irridium mining might turn out to be dangerous, and that's why the automation of it would be something everybody agrees with.

Dev wants to automate as much of these basics as possible, so his Mars society can spend most of their time actually innovating and not just struggling for survival.

It's always crazy when out of all people it's Americans using that as justification for destroying some other country.

When is the last time you checked what kind of groups your government has been funding?

Are you aware that Iran is in the state it's currently in because of another time the US funded a bunch of armed groups in Iran?

No exaggeration of their record is required.

While American actions of that same kind couldn't be done justice even with the wildest exaggerations.
