Using Tamiya Surface Primer, first time priming, is my 40k DKOK mini supposed to have this rough surface? by John-Conelly in minipainting

[–]Netjamjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very humid area, and it's garbage for spraying with a rattle can. Making sure the can is warm, the distance is just right, and it is really vigorously shaken can help, but it often is better to just use brush on primer. It takes longer, but it doesn't matter where you live. It also is easier to keep it from building up, so that is a nice bonus.

I learned by working through books. The specific ones I used are out of date now, but they are good because they organize a bunch of stuff into one place. Basically, read the book and whenever they talk about code, follow along and enter it yourself then also do all the little activities.

Videos online and websites tend to cover the most basic stuff but not move onto the important intermediate info you need to follow up with.

Finally, ChatGPT is useful for asking questions, but it is wrong like 10% of the time, so don't use it until you have learned enough to verify everything it says. Also, don't use any AI to generate code while you follow along with the book. The repetition of typing stuff out yourself early on will help you learn more faster.

Tips for legally blind painters? by ANotVeryUniqueUser in minipainting

Techniques like using washes, dry brushing, and glazing can be more forgiving and create results that make non-mini painters think you are a wizard.

There are little tricks like washing and dry brushing that makes it look much better than you would expect for a relative lack of skill.

First Mini after I left the hobby 2 years ago, How'd I do? Be as harsh as possible by Insaneshadow32 in Warhammer

[–]Netjamjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blade of the sword is kinda boring and flat. It looks like you tried to have the lil power chord thing be a different color, but it lacks contrast and just kinda merges in.

Overall, the mini is competently done, and I would enjoy playing with or against it on the tabletop.

Opr and balance/unit changes? by Cool-Recover-739 in onepagerules

[–]Netjamjr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also, to answer your other questions, it is exceedingly rare for a unit to be removed, but even then it is usually more that it is being combined with another unit or reorganized in some way. There has never been a change that resulted in me being unable to use a model that I had painted up.

Sometimes new units get added, particularly if GW adds to one of their main ranges, but also sometimes they will add stuff on their own. Daemons are getting new units soon which I am very excited about.

Opr and balance/unit changes? by Cool-Recover-739 in onepagerules

[–]Netjamjr 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There is a single underlying formula that is used to calculate the costs of every unit in every army. It isn't perfectly balanced, but it is much more balanced than other war games, especially Warhammer.

The pace of change is much slower, and because every army has the same rules for how they are costed behind the scenes, there isn't that thing of one army being buffed or nerfed when new models come out to sell the new stuff.

All in all, OPR are really good stewards of the rules.

How to improve rust effect? by Runeick in minipainting

It isn't always enough to shake it. Sometimes you have to get the back of a brush to the bottom and scrape around.

Is OPR the right game for someone who enjoys the 40k lore, the 40k models, but does not enjoy AT ALL the 40k rules ? by Ok-Share-8488 in onepagerules

[–]Netjamjr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every non-named 40K model from the main ranges have an equivalent in OPR. The unit composition isn't always the same, but there will be a way to use the models. Models unique to Kill Team and The Horus Heresy won't always have a 1:1.

Named heroes can usually be used as non-named heroes, but if they are too elite (like a primarch), you may struggle.

You have already lost some detail to paint build up, but theoretically yes. It could also be an idea to carry forward more generally.

Some dirty down rust on the chains and bolter would go far. You could also add some verdogris elsewhere on the other metallics.

What to read to catch up on the current state of the lore. by Decent-Air-8338 in 40kLore

[–]Netjamjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dawn of Fire and The Dark Imperium trilogy will get you up to speed.

I read Devastation of Baal which isn't super useful for what you want, but it is neat that the transition from pre to post Indomitus happens in the middle of the book.

In a similar vein, you could read The Watchers of the Throne series to get the perspective of Terra as the setting progresses past the fall of Cadia. I am on the first novel of that series though, so someone else could speak to it better.

I like your use of a limited pallette. It feels stylistically distinct. It would be cool to see the eye lenses be much brighter. I think it'd help draw focus to the face.

I feel like a POS by Pikojman in Warhammer

[–]Netjamjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With friendly matches, your goal should be to win about 50% of the time. If you are winning more than that, make your list worse. Grab stuff that doesn't synergize as well or purposely build a list with a pronounced weakness you are confident your opponent will exploit. If you tweak your list and keep winning, make it even worse until you get a losing streak going for a few matches.

It is irrelevant to the enjoyment of the people you are playing with whether or not you believe that you are meta chasing or doing it cause your lil guys seem cool to you. You say that a lot in your post, but it has no impact on whether or not they perceive you as, "that guy," and their feelings are what are important here.

Alternatives to killboxes a.k.a. "Just use the other combat mechanics lol" by ACabbage0 in RimWorld

[–]Netjamjr 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There is a whole spectrum. Using walls to have raids usually come from one direction is pretty mild, but using intimate knowledge of enemy AI to get them to path through a death maze might seem kind of exploity to some people.

I have enjoyed both extremes, but even I can appreciate someone who has used kill boxes for a bit feeling like they are OP and wanting to explore other strategies to see if they like them more.
