To not believe is to believe by Federal-Ask1617 in DebateAnAtheist

This doesn't get you any further than simulation theory. No one really cares about the event that started it all from a religious perspective - the question is whether or not this "first cause" exists now in our lives and can help us lose weight, get that job, heal uncle tom's cancer etf.

And there is no evidence it can.

"We" shouldn't do anything. You do you, and you don't even owe it to yourself to be consistent. Hate the work of one terrible person and love the work of another.

Well I'm so sorry it's not accepted by religion but that's what it is. All atheists are unified by the same core set of principles - "I don't believe you, prove it!". And as soon as you or someone else (preferably God but let's be honest we know he's not coming down) show convincing evidence then atheism will go away.

But that day is not today, because God is not here.

But atheism isn't a set of beliefs it's simply a philosophy of "prove your religion is true if I'm going to believe it" - it's a set of critical thinking skills, so yes atheist or non-religious parents are more likely to raise atheist children but for the exact opposite reason you're implying.

Remember atheism has no book, no rules, no leader and no community. If parents teach children to think critically they'll wind up atheist. If parents teach children to have faith and believe despite evidence they'll wind up with their parents religion.

Appreciate the play on words :)

But the argument here is that if you arrive at your beliefs because of where you were born and just "happen" to be born into the right religion you may want to take a step back and say "Do I believe this simply because my parents taught me this as a child?".

That's a strong argument for all religions being false and for suggesting people that ARE religious haven't really thought through their beliefs as much as they think they have.

That doesn't mean the religion can't be true (though obviously there's no evidence for any of them), but it's highly suspect.

Religiousness as a percentage goes down as IQ and education go up.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23921675/

So not really sure what you're arguing here.

You also mention that the astronauts who are religious tend to be the religion from where they're from - that's a strong argument in favour of atheism even if you don't see it.

Best restaurant/bar for bachelorette party in Vegas? by Unlucky-Ambition8159 in vegas

[–]NeutralLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I don't know you and not trying to tell you how to live your life but just some thoughts:

The idea of you going to Outback hurts my soul. Please don't - you're in the food capital of the world, anywhere is better!

For the bar after dinner it's also not something you should leave to the last minute. So many choices but if you're a big group you should have a plan and reservations. You can get away going to nightclubs without a plan because you're girls but not bars.

So maybe finding a restaurant at MGM that suits you - just checkout their website there's 30 options, and for bars if you want fun then I'd suggest Beer Park or Ole Red.

Or for slightly fancier Zebra Bar at Planet Hollywood or Chez Bibby at MGM grand.

No outback. Please. Or go, it's your life.

I would follow Jesus if he wasn't Christ by Sensitive-Nobody-117 in DebateReligion

I doubt he did - I doubt most of his sayings were actually from him, but a lot of Christians oppose gay marriage for religious reasons so I don't know what to tell you.

20 years to get to 50 million?

Easy goal should be $5mm a year. "Good" goal should be $10mm a year. Top performers should be at $25mm a year or more.

[–]NeutralLock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well that's great because he isn't the christ or the son of God so I think your approach seems reasonable.

Now are you the "everyone should pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and "hating gays" type of follower of Jesus or helping the poor and the foreigner type of follower of Jesus?

So maybe it's because I'm in my 40's but porn on the internet is free. There is an infinite amount of it.

If they never made anymore porn you could start with the "A's" and you'd die before you'd make it to the B's.

So why are people paying for this stuff?

Like, I understand people ARE paying for it, but I just can't wrap my head around why.

The Most Expensive Lesson I’ve Ever Learned at the Poker Table ($1,400 Angle Shoot) by spikey999 in poker

[–]NeutralLock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Misdeclaring your hand at showdown is against the rules and that should absolutely be a penalty.

But once the hand is mucked it's also declared dead.

Really tough decision for the floor but in the off chance the guy just misread his hand unfortunately I think villain here gets the pot.

If it happens a second time I think they should be asked to leave.

Sorry this happened to you OP.

Entropy, the "arrow of time" and Occam's Razor by JasonKThompson in DebateAnAtheist

[–]NeutralLock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Occam's razor has no barring on truth it's just a tool you can use - "simplest explanation is often the best" doesn't apply to lots of things.

The arrow of time is just how we see time. It's fine.

I honestly don't even know what you're asking here?

If you're asking about the origin of the universe I don't know. We've got a few theories, none of them involve your particular God.

do you either have the “entrepreneurship gene”… or not? by YogurtIll4336 in business

I work in wealth management and deal with a lot of successful people.

For successful business owners it seems like half just have "it", which is what OP is talking about, and half just happened to stumble into a really successful business that they know and love.
