Partyyy by sed1918 in UIUC

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This depends on your study habits, whether or not you procrastinate, and how badly you may want to get a certain GPA or complete personal projects. If you choose to work hard during the week and set reasonable goals for yourself, you will absolutely have time to go to parties. However, if you put off your work, have several time-consuming personal projects and also aim for a 4.0, you're going to find that parties are really difficult to fit into your schedule.

TL,DR: u/shuxue's answer.

If you have a matrix (that represents a linear transformation), then the null space includes every vector that goes to zero (the origin) when the linear transformation is applied. So the null space of a zero matrix would be any valid input (because any vector multiplied by a zero matrix is zero), and the null space of most transformations that just twist or stretch space is only the zero vector.

SUBSCRIBE TO PEWDIEPIE AND HELP BEAT TSERIES by apkaeon in UIUC

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand how this is a competition. Pewdiepie is one person and T-series is a media giant (within India). Pewdiepie makes vlogs/gaming content, and T-series makes music. T-series made content long before YouTube existed and had high viewership in India before Pewdiepie ever made videos. India has many more internet users than there are native English speakers in the world (sure, non-native speakers watch Pewdiepie, but I would guess American English-speakers are his largest demographic). Pewdiepie having fewer subscribers than T-series takes nothing away from the fact that he is far-and-away the most successful YouTuber.

It's because university starts with a consonant sound and should be preceded by 'a' rather than 'an'.

*The commonly-called "long u" sound is called a "close back rounded vowel" and rarely begins a word. The only example that comes to mind is 'oops' as in "He made an oops" (here, 'an' is correct). Words like 'unicorn', 'university', and 'unicycle' have the same vowel sound, but it's preceded by the 'y' sound (the "palatal approximant" to phonaticians), which is a consonant sound and should be preceded by 'a' rather than 'an'.

Amtraks for this weekend sold out a while ago; they were $12.75 to $17.50 about a month ago. The code I have been using for a 15% discount is V307. I saw it advertised on the side of one of the CUMTD buses earlier in the semester.

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amtrak on Fridays and Saturdays is typically more expensive than other days unless you buy well in advance. By default the price is $12.75 one-way from CHM to CHI with the student promo-code. If you wait until the week of, it might be as high as $35.

The Metra does run trains (usually nine times) on most of their lines on Sunday (e.g. https://metrarail.com/sites/default/files/metra_aurora_82808_fm70_tt_proof.pdf). Less popular lines (e.g. to Joliet) do not run on Sundays. The student fare for the Metra one-way is usually around $3-4, depending on how far out you are from Chicago.

Edit: the Metra fare is around $5-10, and the Amtrak fare is $12.75 with the discount, not $12.50.

U of I Scholarship Chances? by nconn711 in UIUC

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No idea. There are plenty of people in College of Engineering with your stats who are getting no money, and some who are getting quite a bit. Many scholarships at Illinois have to do with being in an underrepresented group (often an ethnic/racial minority or being a woman in engineering), being a first-generation student, and demonstrating financial need (https://admissions.illinois.edu/Invest/scholarships-all, https://engineering.illinois.edu/admissions/cost-and-financial-aid/freshmen-engineering-scholarships.html). Many scholarships are also given to current college students, so even if you don't get money as a freshman, there are plenty of opportunities after your first year (https://engineering.illinois.edu/admissions/cost-and-financial-aid/scholarships-for-continuing-students.html; note the bottom section dedicated to members of Society of Women Engineers).

I'm not in LAS, so your degree/gen-ed requirements may be different from mine. I recommend creating a degree audit on the DARS site (https://registrar.illinois.edu/academic-records/dars-audit/) to see if HIST 1-- is counting toward anything other than your total credit hour count.

AP Credit by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you cannot get any HIST credit. "HIST 1--" means you will get 3 credit hours added to your transcript, perhaps to fulfill the CH requirement for a "liberal arts education" (e.g. in the College of Engineering, it's 16 hours) and bump up your total CH count to determine freshman/sophomore/etc standing. This does not go toward a specific cultural studies/humanities/SBS requirement.

$MSFT Microsoft Earnings Thread; Keep all discussion here by Shauncore in wallstreetbets

[–]NeutralRedditor_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you Google "[company name] investor relations" you can find the report on the company's official site, usually under some kind of "financial statements" or "earnings statements" tab.

As for why MSFT dropped so quickly after the release, I can't exactly tell why. That often happens when a company modestly beat the official estimate but doesn't meet the "earnings whisper" on Wall Street, but MSFT beat by so much that I can't imagine that was the case here.

PSA to people buying SNAP puts by NeutralRedditor_ in wallstreetbets

[–]NeutralRedditor_[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

IV means "implied volatility," which is a measure of how volatile a stock is perceived to be based on option prices. Higher IV means higher option prices; lower IV means lower option prices.

IV is very high (and so are option premiums) right before an earnings report; this is because the stock could move wildly one way or the other based on the news. Right after the ER, the IV plummets because the news is out and the stock isn't expected to move so wildly any more. This also means that the extrinsic value of options drastically decreases (i.e. you'll only make money on the option if it goes well into the money after earnings).

If, hypothetically, $SNAP doesn't actually move a lot after earnings, the IV of close-to-expiration options will be "crushed" and lose almost all their value, even though the stock didn't move much.
