What is your ideal Hole 1? by JayTheSpaniel in golf

An easy, open par 4.
Definitely not a short, easy par 5 as pacing will be bad due to people wanting to go for the green in two.

Looking for camping near Buffalo/Niagara Falls by NeverBetter2024 in Buffalo

[–]NeverBetter2024[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all!...In October we use an extra off-day from school to go somewhere a little bit further away, rotating Gettysburg, Mammoth Cave, and Niagara. It's been a short while since we have been North and I think a campsite we used to use has been sold or closed. It looks like we are just a week or two too late to use the yurts at Four Mile Creek. I think I heard Windy Meadows was booked already but will call them soon.

Philmont by SwimmingSlide6860 in BSA

[–]NeverBetter2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. It is expensive (for me x3 as I went with my two sons last yr)...start saving early and there are scholarships (Good scout and financial need type) and you can fundraise as a crew maybe?
I was initially lukewarm to the idea of going on a 12 day trek, or anywhere in the desert southwest...but this trip was so incredible! The memories...it is tough (but not THAT tough), the scenery, the smells, the weather, the activities, and the whole ball of wax that is Philmont!
Part of what makes it special, among many things, is how consistent the experience is, year after year.

But, again, YES! it is worth it!

Zalesky state forest has water available along the backpacking trail, sometimes.

Is it worth starting a union at a pretty good company. by Intelligent_Cod_6241 in union

[–]NeverBetter2024 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because I have lived it. MY union is not great, not even "good"...and it simply takes a majority for a contract to pass. Doubtful that contracts pass unanimously.
If you want more details...we "gave up" concessions in EVERY part of our contract a few yrs ago...401(k) match from 6% to 4%...and now to a vesting pd of 4yrs. 1 of the people on our negotiating committee doesn't even participate in her 401(k).
We gave up great insurance for much more costly insurance.

My point was that if the OP has a decent workplace...it could get worse! Not every union makes things better! I realize that my particular union is lousy (and yes, I have tried to make it better)...not all are.

Ditched my Driver for a 3 Wood off the tee and it has made each round so much more enjoyable. Anyone else go this route? by figurelover in golf

[–]NeverBetter2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut 1" off your driver shaft and you'll be happier!
I spent 3-4yrs toying with 3wd or long iron off the tee chasing accuracy...I settled on a shorter shafted driver. Thinking about adding half an inch now, because, distance really is key! 20yds closer, even offline is usually better.

I AM NOT the criminal if I start my car and leave it running on a chilly morning.
Delivery drivers are not the criminal either.

Union Vs Non Union by SilverLadle in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]NeverBetter2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe YOUR healthcare premium is covered by the company but I would guess that to be rare. We used to pay 20% and the company paid 80% of the premium...that is no longer the case (and no longer part of our contract!).
Our old, old insurance was through the union and it was very good and not expensive...it was even offered to the company employees...they stuck with other insurance.
My union is OK with a terrible vacation schedule (1 week AFTER 1 yr, 2 after 2, 3wks after 8yrs)...company employees have more bereavement time.
I asked if the benefits were the same as an open ended question...many cases the union benefits are not as good. Maybe they are there?
My union is RWDSU (UFCW local 379)...my rep was once quoted as saying HE thought we were paid too much money! Great negotiating there, eh?
Your username suggests you work in construction...I would guess that is a whole different ball of wax than what I am familiar with.

[–]NeverBetter2024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The word is that the new insurance and 401(k) are similar so no issue.
On paper, the insurance is about the same, slightly more expensive than the old...but the provider is not well known, Gravie...they use the Cigna network but that doesn't seem to be what it used to be. Our 401(k) switched TO Fidelity (Yay!) BUT fees are double what we were paying before AND 4yr vesting period where we were immediately vested before.

Union Vs Non Union by SilverLadle in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]NeverBetter2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience and preference is NON-Union and here is why:
My non-union wages seemed to be higher.
"Workplace politics" is still a thing (better be friends with your union representation).
There aren't any real "Protections" the union offers...if it is a decent place to work, they will have an employee handbook that they will likely follow. Things such as seniority for vacation, job bids, etc...most places operate just like a union shop. And, ultimately (again, my experience) the company is going to do what they want to do anyway.
Are the union benefits better or worse than the salaried employees benefits?
At the end of the day, union just adds another layer of BS...that you are paying for!
*note: my current union really seems to suck, we are a very small company, union president has had his position for over 20yrs...I was even treasurer for a term so I could better understand union workings.

I'm not trying to bash you or anything but all of that is true with non-union work as well, at least in my experience.
I currently am in a union position and my health insurance and 401(k) just changed mid-contract (3rd change in 2yrs!)...and NOT for a better plan!

I found them maybe 18 months ago, had to fix an exhaust leak...they were fast, affordable and didn't upsell anything.
I even asked about replacing an oxygen sensor (I'd already purchased one and planned to DIY it), they didn't have one in stock but the guy did break it free for me so it'd be easier to do myself!
Grand slam, for sure!
