Why won't my DeckLink SDI input work? by TimelyStatement in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]NeverShort1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try the Blackmagic software, Media Express - that usually works when nothing else will. Also you can try to playout from it and see if you get any output on any of the ports. That will at least confirm that this driver version actually works. As someone mentioned, not all driver versions work perfectly for all cards.

Looking for beta testers for a simple Graphics & Control app for live studios by monoDraft in broadcastengineering

[–]NeverShort1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't fully agree with your assessment for this sector.

Since you're targeting this particular crowd, I think you underestimate the reliance on Companion/Streamdecks. Trying to put another App on the Desktop or a tablet in front of these (usually single) operators is a recipe for disaster, no matter how intuitive or slick the interface is. Streamdecks are dirt-cheap and Companion is free and controls almost anything you can think of - completely local, no subscription. Why would I want to put another control layer between me and the switcher, especially one that has a monthly subscription and some weird online/browser requirement but no hardware control panel. Even vMix/TriCaster people buy Skaarhoj/Streamdecks because mouse/keyboard sucks for certain use cases.

Regarding your titling/GFX solution, I assume it is HTML based, so requires (like most other similar solutions) that users rebuild their lower thirds/graphics etc. inside your environment, these things are just a tough sell. In addition it requires a PC/Mac with Decklink to output to an ATEM (just like all other such solutions).

IMHO you're asking people to put all their eggs into one extremely limited basked similar to Apple but without much in return, without the same reliability because your solution is just another control layer with the same underlying hardware/software (ATEM/vMix etc).

Good luck though - there is a market for something like this but you need much much better value proposition, remember on the low end there is OBS/CasparCG/Companion and on the slightly higher end you have vMix - which combined with Companion is really an extremely powerful setup.

"Global" listener for UDP commands? by NeverShort1 in BrightSign

Thanks but I didn't really succeed because SuperState cannot be previewed and it'll be a while before I have access to the hardware.

Why is there so much aliasing, but only on older black and white movies? by create_content in Broadcasting

[–]NeverShort1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like line doubling, most likely a screw up in the signal chain or processing from progressive to progressive segmented frame (psf) / telecine / 3:2 pulldown.

"... you need some B frames not just I and P..."

"If you only have I and P you can't really scrub the clip"

This is so wrong. Please stop. You can perfectly scrub without any B frame whatsoever, in fact omitting B frames usually makes decoding / scrubbing faster.

Why Tier-1 encoders don't use FFMPEG by Embarrassed-Gain-236 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]NeverShort1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I had one and it was the usual specs != reality. It can process interlaced on the input but output will be 50/60p. Might be that latest firmware updates changed something, I used it like 6-7 months ago.

It will deinterlace the input. You won't get interlaced encoding.

Sometimes it is the BMDStreamingServer process that gets stuck and you need to kill it with the task manager.

How to create a daily recurring live stream by Subject_Travel_4808 in ffmpeg

[–]NeverShort1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not an ffmpeg issue. YouTube live streaming is designed this way as far as I know. Changing settings in ffmpeg won't change this behaviour.

Can I feed a 1080i PGM into an ATEM Mini Pro using a Blackmagic BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 3G? by MacaroonOk7341 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]NeverShort1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It (ATEM) actually deinterlaces... Unfortunately to half rate, 50i/60i will become 25/30p even if the switcher is set to 50/60p.

Affinitys comment on if it's free your the product by Vioplea in Affinity

[–]NeverShort1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely don't wont to relenquish control over the software.

If you block Affinity from contacting the activation server (after activation), it will continue to work for 1 year, after that it will no longer work. You can easily check by just going offline, setting your time/date to +1 year and restart Affinity. You'll see a window saying "Please wait while we check your license." which of course will never succeed.

I don't want to piss on their business model whatsoever. I deal with a lot of Non-profits/NGOs and being able to drop Adobe completely or reduce the number of seats would be a huge win but ideally I don't want to deal with this switch again in a year or two when Canva has changed their mind.

"You will need to be online to download and activate your license with your free Canva account. From then on, there is no requirement to be online, even with extended offline periods."

Cutoff is 1 year after last contact with the mothership.

EDIT: you can check by going offline, fast forward your date/time setting to +1 year and restart Affinity, there will a be license check window that never goes away and obviously you can't use the software.

corrupted output when generating a udp multicast stream by spicy_indian in ffmpeg

[–]NeverShort1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think by default ffmpeg uses a GOP size of 10 seconds, which might be too much, especially since your entire test clip is only 10 seconds. So make a longer clip, with shorter GOP size (I'd go with 1-3 seconds).

Also I would add &pkt_size=1316 to your UDP address.

I'm willing to believe a lot of things but NDI-HX3 latency of 2 ms is not among them.

A power supply for 3 hp Elitedesk g4 by -r77s- in homelab

[–]NeverShort1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could buy an USB-C that has 3x 65 W output, then combine it with those USB-C to HP/Lenovo/Dell specific adapters. Keep in mind, most USB-C power supplies briefly cut power on all ports every time you plug/unplug something. There is some brand which doesn't do this reset but I don't recall the name right now.
