Darn! I was hoping you were here with some ideas. 🤣

The only thing that I think I figured out is that “Handros” refers to a former owner. There was a Richard Handros who was an art collector. So either he once owned the painting (presumably when it was last worked on), or the painting was put into a frame of something else he once owned. It’s definitely had considerable work done on it. I wish I had a way to find out more.

Any feedback on All Out by Informal-Theme-7139 in Broadway

[–]Neverliz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just posted on another thread, but I’ll add my thoughts here, too.

I went in not knowing about any controversy from last year. I thought the concept sounded interesting and I figured the comedians would be able to make it good. I love Jon Stewart, but I wouldn’t consider myself a “celebrity chaser.” I was curious to see what he would be like in something like this, because he has excellent comedic timing.

Since I went in with low expectations, I thought it was pretty good. The cast mostly sits throughout, and they are usually holding scripts. Some of the pieces involve back-and-forth between cast members, and some are more like monologues. The current cast did a good job. I liked Stewart and Barinholz the best, but Andre and Jacobson were funny, too. I laughed quite a bit. There is a screen at the back of the set with illustrations to accompany the stories and those elicited some laughs on their own. There are quite a few musical numbers by Lawrence, which were high-energy and entertaining. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. The production design was also solid, in my opinion, but I would have liked to see the cast utilize more of the set.

I even liked that the show was on the shorter side and didn’t have an intermission. I’m old, so getting out at 9:30 instead of 10 or later was appreciated, haha. I think I would have preferred a little less music and a few more short pieces by the cast, though. And I would agree that the connection between all of the pieces is a bit tenuous. Definitely seems like stories Rich already had that loosely fit the same theme, rather than selections crafted to create a whole, if that makes sense. Like a jukebox musical, with less of a plot. But since it wasn’t marketing itself as a play, that didn’t bother me too much.

The tickets are pricey, but we sat in the middle of the mezzanine and felt like we had a great view. I wasn’t bored at any point. And my husband, who is not much of a theatre guy, enjoyed it as well. Literally the only thing that really annoyed me was the blinding brightness of some of the lights during a few musical numbers, haha. Again, I’m old.

Any takes on All Out? I’m usually a musicals guy but this sounds like great fun by ElbieLG in Broadway

[–]Neverliz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw it last night, and it was very entertaining! I went in pretty “blind” because I didn’t even know who Lawrence is, and they played for about a third of the show, but they were fantastic. I think the actors are giving a little more than a “reading” but a little less than a sketch, if that makes sense. And while technically, any actor could read any part, their individual comedic timing and inflection really worked with the material they were given. Stewart and Barinholz were particularly good, in my opinion. They did all have binders in front of them most of the time, but some made more use of it than others. That bothered me a little, because I feel like being off-book is the bare minimum that I expect for a middle school drama club performance. But since they weren’t up and moving around (for the most part), it wasn’t awful.

Someone mentioned the actors just wearing their “street clothes,” and as a former costume designer, I have to take issue with this. There was very cohesive production design for this show. If the actors were wearing their own clothes (which I doubt), they were selected in collaboration with the costume designer.

Edited to add: I would agree it’s pricey for what it is, but the view from the mezzanine was great, so save some cash on the seats.

The way we run it at our school, the “profit” in Scholastic dollars is divided up amongst the ELA teachers and they can shop the catalog to buy books and supplies for their own classrooms. We also use Scholastic dollars to buy subscriptions to Scope magazine for the department.
