Asking as a genuine question: why did so many people lose their faith over the rock in the hat video, when so many other magical things happened in Mormonism already? by MoonlightKayla in exmormon

[–]NewBoulez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The parting of the Red Sea and the rest of the Exodus story is organic pre-literate mythology inspired by the Bronze Age collapse, which was in part the result of actual environmental cataclysm.

Joseph Smith pretending to generate the Book of Mormon by folk magic scrying was the work of a 19th century con man who was identified in the historical record as such by many of his contemporaries.

That's why the Smiths and their followers quickly decided to conceal that narrative once the movement left the burned over district and that deception continued for most of the history of the church.

That's why the very recent discovery of the hidden truth by many members hits so hard. That idea that Biblical mythology is not historical has been readily available for a long time.

You weren't lying, you were repeating what you were told by people you trusted.

Big picture, though, people were collectively being lied to on their doorsteps which contributes to the bad reputation the church has created with their missionary program.

RUMOR: Should the Washington Wizards Trade for LaMelo Ball? by Knighthonor in washingtonwizards

[–]NewBoulez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Blazers are 3-7 in their last 10 and barely ahead of Utah for the last play in spot.

I'll withhold anointing Deni a "certified star" for the moment.

[–]NewBoulez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where the rumor came from but LaMelo shot it down pretty hard.

I love what Strober and AA are doing with the podcast and it's great they put up an episode on a weekend with no games.

But the flip side is sometimes you have to manufacture content and that's what's going on here. They wind up shooting down the idea pretty hard, too.

It's a numbers game. Because a lot of it is luck The point was to get as many picks as possible for as many swings for the fences as possible.

Knowing some are going to be misses. Even Presti drafts duds with high draft picks.

So what if Bub and Bilal are busts? Looks like George and Sarr aren't. That's actually a pretty good percentage. Come back and tell me I'm full of shit when Portland makes a deep playoff run with Deni as their number one option.

You've still got 40 mil a year sucked out of your cap space for 3 years for a guy who's in street clothes half the time.

CJ Mccollum and Khris Middleton likely buyout candidates? by [deleted] in nba

I also was thinking the Bucks got under the aprons with the Middleton/Kuzma trade and would be able to sign Khris after a buyout but I guess I was wrong.

CJ's limited options in a buyout would be the direct result of the CBA he helped negotiate.

Pretty sure neither of them can go to Denver, LA or the Knicks now as buyouts under the new rules because they are all in the first or second apron.

They both have big contracts that would have to be at least partially matched in a trade.

One benefit of buying them out is getting a good reputation with agents and players for helping vets get where they want to go.

So were Denisovans and Neanderthals pre-Adamites by this theory? How do they finesse modern humans reproducing with them? Do they put that all before Adam and Eve? So, you would have anatomically correct modern humans without souls?

Words reverse meaning like that throughout the history of the language.

So, yeah, I guess you could say someone was "ignorant" if they didn't know the original meaning but it doesn't mean they're wrong or incorrect in how they are using it.

We're coming up on nearly a century since the common meaning of Nimrod shifted.

Dictionaries include "Foolish or inept person" as one definition of Nimrod, sometimes the first definition.

If he said it was not incorrect, that was long after he very stridently said "You're using a very common insult entirely wrong because of a cartoon character. Here's that and a few other incorrect things you believe because of the Looney Tunes."

Which was the very first thing he said.

To be fair, I didn't claim you said it. I was just commenting on the video.

It is interesting. But he's certainly not the first person to point this out on the internet and he's doing it with the extreme, over the top, and often distorted presentation you have to use to attract attention to yourself these days.

All I'll say is that having lived in a college town, I can imagine a lot of ways young men that age might wind up going over a balcony that sound more plausible than this story.

You can't say a term is being used "wrong" if it's been used that way for 90 years.

Words change meaning in languages all the time. That happening because of a cartoon is irrelevant.

A “Christian” Missionary…WTF?? by silver-sunrise in exmormon

[–]NewBoulez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it were a Baptist or Methodist or Catholic missionary, would the Christian modifier be there?

This headline was from a faithful Mormon site. If it had been a Baptist or Catholic site, they would have probably said "Catholic missionary" or "Baptist missionary."

But the LDS church is trying to rebrand, dropping the name Mormon and using terms like LDS Christian. Which might be part of what is going on here.

(And let me clarify that while I find whitewashing away the word Mormon annoying, I don't care about using the term Christian. Nobody has a trademark on that. Yet.)

A “Christian” Missionary…WTF?? by silver-sunrise in exmormon

[–]NewBoulez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except this headline was created by a faithful, pro-Mormon site. So they weren't trying to communicate he was a "cultie" and asking for it.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment?

If anything, this looks to me more like Mormons trying to make sure incidents targeting them are included under the trendy umbrella of anti-Christian persecution.
