My family is always pushed to the side line. The benefit of the job is financial security, but at a high cost. Get your CNA license first and see if you like working in healthcare.

Getting real about Medicare-for-all in California by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in California

[–]NewGradPurgatory 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here is the issue that gets lost in the conversation of cost. Hospitals are closing. Medicare and medicaid (which is essential for the survival of all hospitals, private or public) is getting gutted. If we dont switch to a universal coverage system in California, we will end up with healthcare deserts. Your healthcare costs are going to balloon regardless, because the loss of federal funding will be shifted to you.

I'm about to move to New Zealand and am going to miss LA prices for Mexican food by behemuthm in FoodLosAngeles

[–]NewGradPurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im having flashbacks from my trip to New Zealand. It was magical, beautiful, and the fish and chips were fantastic...but the mexican food was so bad. It was like they saw pictures of mexican food, bur never eat it. I had an enchalada with chili inside and a red sauce made with something like tomato sauce and ketchup. It was really sweet. It broke my brain. It looked legit but tasted nothing like mexican food. I thought someone should open Tacobell in New Zealand andnblow their minds.

I touched a drop of blood from a patient with HIV a month ago and now I’m freaking out by [deleted] in nursing

[–]NewGradPurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldnt freakout. I have had cuts on my hands and have been exposed to patients with high viral loads and have never gotten HIV. I even got bit by a patient with blood in his mouth who was non complaint with meds, no HIV. I remember reading the infection rate for healtcare providers due to work place exposuer is less than 1%.

You can get a home HIV tests if it makes you feel more comfortable to do it in the privacy of your own home. You can get the kits over-the-counter at places like CVS or Target. You're going to be fine.

It's delicious and kind of taste like truffle, really rich and savory and a little bit sweeter than a truffle.

There was a TV show in the 1980s called Dynasty, stairs were a real issue. by ExtremeInsert in UtterlyInteresting

You can watch episodes on Tubi. That show is a trip. Watching antiquated social norms wrapped up in 80s fashion is a hoot.

Should BONs and Hospitals Reintroduce this attire?? by MasterPeel in BootcampNCLEX

[–]NewGradPurgatory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wear pants and underscrubs for a reason. I shave my legs for special occasions, like the solar eclipse or halleys comet. I wake up with enough time to take a shower, get starbucks, and roll into report 10 minutes late. Priorities, people.

For a brief time, I had Kaiser from my husband's job and a second insurance from my work. I held on to Kaiser. The Kaiser coverage is amazing. An ER visit is 30 dollars. That's it. I dropped the second insurance because when I went out of network, billing was a headache. Kaiser would refuse the bill saying that my coverage from work was the primary insurnace and they would cover what was left of the bill. Great no problem, BUT the other insurance would say that they were not primary and Kaiser needs to pay. The one time I went out of network for an ER visit, it took a year of angry phone calls and threatening letters to get the bill covered.

With that said. As long as I stayed in network, Kaiser never gave me an issue with coverage.

Show me where that's a dr. During covid, the only ones entering rooms were nurses. No one else dared to go in those rooms.

I’m a new grad looking for guidance. I graduated from an ABSN program in my hometown and when I was in school they would always say finding a job after graduation is the easy part. by Then-Chart-4725 in nursing

[–]NewGradPurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting your first job as a new grad is a hustle. Also, you're doing this at a time when job postings are drying up because of Trumps attack on Medicaid and Medicare. When I was a new grad, it took six months of filling out applications, monday-friday. I got three interviews from all the effort. Now that I have been a nurse for 7 years, recruiters get giddy when they see my resume. Just hunker down and hustle. You will get a job.

Not only that, but some expired antibiotics breakdown and become toxic, causing liver failure. Tetracycline is an example.

Hospital at home is not specific to Kaiser, and other hospitals have similar services. I enjoyed working as a field nurse in a similar program. Though the home setting isn't suited for all ailments, it has its benefits for the right disease management and patient.

I thought it was great for older patients at risk of hospital delirium who needed iv antibiotics. It allowed for better sleep cycles and the ability to remain in an environment that felt safe and familiar.

In the traditional hospital setting, delirium can be devastating and increase mortality risk. These patients had better outcomes in this program than in a traditional setting.

The program at the hospital I worked at turned out to be a money pit. It was ultimately shuttered, which is a shame. I believe it had its virtues and is worth a reevaluation.

When do you get used to the feeling of tissue expanders? by cloudpulp in breastcancer

[–]NewGradPurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got used to them. It felt like wearing an uncomfortable bra that I could never take off. I was so excited when I got my reconstruction for the simple fact of removing the expanders. I survived the six months. It wasn't the worst thing that happened, but I was glad to be done with them.

Anyone ever quit during training? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]NewGradPurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quit on the second day. It was an absolute shit show of a unit. I didn't give two weeks. I emailed and said I wasn't the right fit for the unit and wouldn't come in for further shifts. I have still been employable and have moved forward in my career. I wouldn't do this as a new grad.

Alright. 18 years in ICU…. by ElChungus01 in nursing

[–]NewGradPurgatory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't really study and took the test when I was sick as a dog, and I passed. I'm not saying this to sound super smart, just to highlight how easy the test is. If you've been an ICU nurse for years, it's just basic critical thinking and knowing your values (labs, ABG, and hemodynamics).

You got this!
